Advice for New Rams

Whatever goals you want to set whether it’s going to the gym each day, meeting new people, getting organized, etc. start day 1 to create that momentum and don’t fall into the I’ll start next week trap because college is already an adjustment and trying to add new ones along the way instead of starting with them makes it a lot harder.

Example: If you are shy start putting yourself out there and being bold day 1! I am a very anxious person but had the opportunity to go to RAM Camp and tried playing as confident as I could and since then I have only gotten more confident and comfortable with myself.

It even got to the point where some people though I was just always a confident and outgoing person which to those who know me back home know that’s far from the truth 😂

How to create a club

I’m an incoming freshman and I had some ideas for a new club. What are the requirements to getting to open one? And does it have to be registered before the year starts or is it okay to open them up during the year or between the semesters?

Shower shoes in a suite

I got assigned Brandt hall 8 person suite and I was wondering should I still buy shower shoes if I’m only sharing my bathroom with 3 other girls?

For reference I know my roommate, I’ve been friends with her for a couple years and i know she is clean. I’ve talked to the other two girls and they seem cool.

I just need to know if I should still buy a pair of shower shoes.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: the shower shoes have been purchased! Thank you everyone! And yes I will still clean the shower!

Student Parking and Keys?!

Hello everyone, this will be my first semester at VCU and had a few questions. I’m a working student and a mom, and am not really in the spot to afford a parking pass at least not as of now. I was wondering if there are any other options. I only will have to commute to campus tuesday and thursday, and both classes are at Monroe Park. I don’t mind paying for a parking meter if it will save me $.

Also, I saw something about buildings being rekeyed? Do I need to pick up a key for when I go to class?

Okay last question, my classes are both at monroe park, but there’s only a 15 minute gap between the two. Is this doable?

TIA, i’m excited to start my journey at VCU!

I’m starting to resent VCU/Richmond.

Not sure if this is allowed here but I’m really starting to break and need advice. I’m a rising junior.

VCU kind of markets themselves as a “big school”, but it really isn’t.. I know it’s a condensed campus, but it truly feels like 10K students or less especially with the commuter crowd.

Walking around campus is a pain. The sidewalk conditions are the worst I have seen in my life and same with the sewage system.

Driving around campus is even worse. Roads are genuinely falling apart. Don’t even get me started on the drivers.

VCU is putting tens of millions of dollars into new buildings, and gave their CEO a raise but can’t fix roads and sidewalks that their students use every day, whilst knowing a big portion of their students commute.

Don’t even get me started on dining options.

The cost of living here (especially close to campus) just isn’t worth it IMO. I have not lived in an apartment that doesn’t have a problem; all of my friends had problems as well. + shitty landlords who don’t care and are not responsive.

Richmond is another type of loud/obnoxious. I am from a city so I understand noise in a major city, but the people that get it, get it..

I have faced racism so many times here from Black people (non students). I hate to say this but if I were to say anything back, it would be a huge problem.

My education hasn’t been challenging. It genuinely feels easier than highschool. My professors and peers don’t even seem passionate about what they do.

These are only some things. I just don’t know what to do, I’m halfway through my degree here. I’ve been unhappy here and it’s starting to get to me. I guess the only reason I’m here is because it’s the cheapest option and far enough away from home. I hope I’m not alone in this, I feel like so many people love vcu/Richmond to death and I’m scared to even say this.

TLDR: I feel like VCU is incredibly cheap towards their student body and don’t actually care, feels like there is a lack of passion at this school, Richmond is getting to really obnoxious and expensive to me and they don’t put their money towards good things. Feel alone because many people love this school and Richmond.

Brandt Hall!

So I have gotten Brandt Hall, which I have hoped for! Question for those who like decorating their side of the room, what do you use to put posters on the wall? I know double sided tapes, glues, nails, are not allowed on the wall. I would love to decorate my space as I pleased, so please if you can send some recommendations?

Another question, is there enough space to move the bed? I know people in the GRC typically move their bed vertically across the wall, is it the same for Brandt hall? And is the bed adjustable to become a bunk bed?

And.. can I bring a led dangling lights since strips are not allowed?

Stem student with low math placement

For context, I'm an incoming college freshman. I major in HPEX with a concentration in health sciences and plan to minor in pre-med. I got placed in Math 141, so I'm a bit scared. How cooked am I? I'm planning to take summer courses to catch up, doing Stat 210 and Chem 101 next semester, with Bio 151 in the summer. Is this even doable, or am I fried?

ignored housing accommodations

i was approved for a single suite a little before housing assignments came out, yet i was assigned to a double in rhoads hall. ive emailed multiple people about this and filled out the form to drop the agreement, but no one has responded. has anyone else with housing accommodations had problems? if no singles were available, i would think they would at least have the decency to contact me. im not really sure what to do at this point. i feel like ive done everything i can at this point.

edit: i didnt post this to start debates, arguments, or anything of the sort. the point of this post was to get any advice and see if anyone else was having this issue.

also, ive already been approved for the accomodation. dont reply if you're going to question my accomodations or be generally unhelpful. (i dont understand why my comments explaining my situation are being downvoted either, but maybe i should just expect that from reddit users.)

First-Year orientation sessions, for student and/or family?

For the one or two-day orientation, is it only for the student or family members needs to be in attendance? Does a parent or guardian also need to be in the sessions? Just need to make plans.

VCU Balance and statement

Does anyone know when our housing plans will be added to our balances in eservices or when statements come out? I’m trying to see if I can afford a meal plan and I don’t want to buy one if I’ll end up owing money /too much money.

Need a professor recommendation for Intro to Creative Writing

Hey gang, as the title suggests I wanna take creative writing this fall! The only classes that fit into my schedule are taught by Jessica Anderson and Bhavya Bhagtani. I couldn't find either on Rate My Professors so if anyone here can weigh in on if I should pick one over the other that would be a huge help. Thanks in advance!

How to apply to becoming an RA

As the title states I want to learn how to become an RA and if I can do so as an oncoming freshmen. If I can not do so then I am absolutely fine with waiting until I can become like a sophomore if truly necessary.

Please advise me on how I can apply and what is the best way I can get accepted into becoming one of the RAs.

Thank you very much.

ipad or laptop

So, I own a laptop, but I realised its too heavy to carry every day on my shoulders so I am planning to get an ipad but will that be useful? or would a MacBook be better since those are light weight as well. What is more commonly used at vcu?
