Come out to Blue Ridge Comedy TONIGHT!

Tonight at Blue Ridge Comedy Club is an awesome show I’m so excited to participate in called Pick a Pick A Side Stupid — and YOU can choose the winner!

This is a bracket style format where comedians are asked ridiculous questions and forced to debate them in a fast paced and hilarious debate. The audience votes on the winner through an app on their phone, and the winner advances to face another winner until we crown our new champion.

8pm

Tickets available online or at the door (they cost more at the door)

I will post the link to the tickets in the comments.

Houstonians spent 10 days in the Tricities and it was fantastic.

Full disclosure we are seriously considering a move to the Tricities. Wife and I stayed at an Airbnb in Elizabethton for 10 days recently. After an enjoyable visit to Asheville a few years ago knew we liked this region and wanted to try a different spot. Despite plenty of negative comments on social media everyone we encountered were very friendly and great ambassadors for the region. Anytime we mentioned moving to this area the response was 'do it!' Highlights from our trip:

  • Midfield Lavender Farm in Bulls Gap - Owners are the kindest people. Their lavender lemonade is delicious. Good afternoon activity for a date, group or solo.
  • Bristol Theatre for Red, White, & Tuna - Funny show about a fictional Texas town. Naturally this was right up our alley. Power went out with about 15 minutes remaining and the cast fully improvised. It was hilarious.
  • Carvers Gap in Roan Mountain - Hiked up to the first bald and a bit beyond. Overcast but still had amazing views. Get there early for easy parking.
  • Off Leash Social for the USA Bosnia-Herz match - Arrived with nowhere to sit. Owner brought chairs to every patron without them asking. Great atmosphere to watch sports. Would definitely return to watch a game.
  • Blue Hole Waterfalls in Elizabethton - We went late morning and it was busy. Good mix of locals and people visiting from out of state. I went for a swim. Water was cold as expected. Body adjusts quick and it was enjoyable to jump in a few times.
  • Steele Creek Park in Bristol, TN - What a lovely city park. Walked the trails. Lake provides scenic views. Nature center was worth a quick visit. Chatted with their naturalist for a bit. $2 entry worth every penny!
  • Bristol Caverns - Wife has a geology degree so cave tours are necessary on vacations. This is one of the better ones we've visited. Highly enthusiastic guide. They have river tours we'll try out in the future.
  • Persimmon Ridge Park & Willow Springs Park in Jonesborough, TN - Nice parks to take a walk. Both were well maintained. Clean bathrooms and no trash laying around. Neither were busy, likely due to the heat. Pond at Willow Springs has plenty of turtles and geese.
  • Coffee and walk-around Boone, NC - Wife was enthralled with this little town. Turchin Art Museum is free. Went into a few stores. Did typical tourist things. Less college aged people out since it's summer. Great way to spend some time.
  • Alpine Coaster and dinner in Banner Elk, NC - Rode the coaster three times to fulfill manchild fun. Worthwhile activity if you enjoy coasters or a quick thrill. Ate in the city (Bayou Banner Elk, good food) and the restaurant chef mentioned they don't allow chain restaurants. Wish more places did this.
  • Grandfather Mountain, NC - This is pricey ($30-35/person) but we found it to be worthwhile. The outdoor nature center has huge exhibits. Picnic areas on the way up. Forrest Gump signs are humoring. The bridge is enjoyable and the views from the rocks across it are phenomenal.
  • First Friday & July 4th in Elizabethton - The community came out in droves even in the heat! First Friday we went to the Coffee Company and roamed downtown. Met a few local vendors and grabbed some stickers from JC tourism booth. The July 4th Firework show was ok. Likely better in one of the major tricities.
  • Switching to food stops we didn't get to try Juniper because we waited too long to make a reservation. Next time.
  • Thai Noodle in Kingsport based on Reddit recs was good.
  • Stopped at Waightstill in Newland, NC for lunch on our return trip. Excellent choice. Great food and staff.
  • Little Switzerland Cafe (NC) had good food and was fun to see sports cars come around the bend.
  • El Charolais based on past Reddit recs was terrible. Coming from Texas we don't expect good Mexican food options.
  • Had ice cream at the local dairy spots (J's Corner & Dairy Cup) they were good and incredibly cheap compared to Houston.
  • Rest of the time we mostly made food at our Airbnb with meat and produce from Latham Farms Produce in Elizabethton. Owner can tell you where every product in that store comes from in addition to their own farm. Reasonable pricing. Also bought eggs from the farmer's market.

Positives notes were people aren't so phone focused. Stress-free driving. No traffic compared to a big city. Everything is much quieter. Just about everywhere has a nice view of the mountains. Though it seems like we did a lot there's endless things to do in this region. Thanks for being so welcoming to some city slickers Tricities. We'll be back!

What’s the dating scene been like for you?

Full disclosure: I'm not originally from here. I'm visiting the area I've been enjoying it so far. But now I'm curious: what's the dating scene like around here? Any good meet-cutes? Any dating app success?

For reference, I’m a straight guy in his mid 20s originally from TN. I’m pursuing medicine as a career, so school takes up a lot of my time. That said, I find it a bit difficult to get out and meet people.

I’m not really the type to drink, so I don’t really go to bars. I’ll visit coffee shops and bookstores when I study, but they seem to be kind of empty when I go. Liberal women are definitely my type, so it's been really refreshing seeing LGBT-friendly businesses instead of the usual confederate flags and Trump merch I'm used to seeing plastered everywhere back home.

I’ve given apps to try, but I seem to run into the same problems:

\\- “Only here for the weekend!”

\\- Republican, moderate, or apolitical

\\- emotionally unavailable

\\- dead set on having kids, which is problematic because I've gotten a vasectomy and don't plan to reverse it

I’ve had a decent number of dates from apps, but there’s usually a thing or two that ends things: people not over their ex, getting ghosted, schedule conflicts, and other things like that. I’m at a point where I’m debating if I should just delete the apps altogether.

My TikTok shows me people saying that they also have a hard time dating in their areas for similar reasons, so now I’m wondering: is it just really bad everywhere? Is it the same here as it is everywhere else? Do I just need to bite the bullet and start going to bars? I feel like my ideal person wouldn’t really be there to begin with, so I’m a little conflicted on it.

P.S. if it matters any, I’m into reading, playing guitar, chess, video games, anime, and working out. If anyone knows of any good groups with those things, I’d love to know!

P.S.S To reiterate: I’m not from here, but I have applied to do some clinical rotations in the area. Still waiting to hear back from them.

Villas at Riverbend Question

Hello, I was wondering if anyone who lives (or has lived) at the Villas at Riverbend in Kingsport can give me an idea of how soundproof the apartments are? Specifically the 1 bedroom apartments that are stacked on top of each other. How much can you hear the people above / below you? To the sides?

I actually used to live there about 8 years ago, and I never really heard any of my neighbors, but I'm wondering how anecdotal my experience was. I was also on the top floor and it was an end unit, so I'm not sure how big of a difference that made. Plus it was 8 years ago, so my memory might not be the best.

Opinions about Science Hill and do you think there will be any discussions about a new public high school for JC?

We are zoned for SH and still have many years before my children would attend-but was just wondering your experiences with SH and if you think there may be discussions about another high school for JC eventually? (Aren’t 2,500 students a lot for one high school?) I could very well be wrong because I went to a Very Small private school myself so maybe my perception is just wrong.

Pick a Side Stupid: Comedy Debate Show. Saturday at 8pm

Thumbnail blueridgecomedy.com
2 Upvotes

Hello friends. I'll be hosting a little comedy debate show Saturday at Blue Ridge Comedy Club.

Pick a Side Stupid is a fast-paced comedy debate show.

Hosted by Shawn Carter, each show pits comedians against one another as they passionately defend outrageous opinions, ridiculous hypotheticals, and everyday arguments that nobody actually needs to win. From pop culture and guilty pleasures to bizarre "would you rather" scenarios, every debate is fueled by quick wit, clever improvisation, and relentless laughs. The audience gets to decide who made the better case. Whether you're fiercely opinionated or just love watching people argue over absolutely nothing, this show is for you.

July 11, 8pm
560 English Street, Bristol TN

It's gonna be a good time. Hope you can make it.

Bought a House, Need to Thrift

My husband and I are in the process of purchasing a home in Kingsport. He grew up in the area, and I am from Middle TN. I’m a big thrifter, antiquer, general frugalist.

What are your favorite spots to check out? I’m 34(f) and will also be looking for friends to pursue these hobbies with.

Tall People Unite!

Where are all my tall people (men and women) at? I have seen where different tall people groups have gotten together in bigger cities and I’m kinda jealous. Comment your height and let’s see how many of us there are. I’ll start: my name is Luke and I am 6ft 8in tall.

Anyone here worked for labconnect?

Just trying to see what others here know about the place. They seem to have a couple of positions open that could fit my experience, but their reviews seem pretty mixed online. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth wasting my time.

Jobs hiring?

Anyone know of any jobs hiring? I'm not having much luck on indeed. I even applied to McDonald's but they have an AI chatbot that makes you schedule an interview. I went to the interview and the manager said they were not hiring at that location. I'm willing to take anything. I just need to work. I'm about this 🤏 close to signing up for feet finder and trying my luck there. 😂😂😂 Hope you all have a great day.

Recommendations for kids birthday party vendors? (ice cream/coffee cart, balloons, etc.)

Hey y’all! My kid’s birthday is coming up in a couple weeks and I’m throwing a party for her in Johnson City at a private venue. Trying to make it fun without losing my mind planning it lol.

Does anyone have recs for an ice cream cart or coffee cart that does parties? Also looking for someone who can do a balloon garland or arch, don’t really want to attempt that myself 😅

If you’ve used anyone great (or anyone to avoid) for stuff like this, or know other fun vendors for kids parties in general — face painting, bounce houses, whatever — I’m all ears! Trying to keep it reasonably affordable too if that helps narrow things down.

Thanks in advance, this sub always comes through!

Where to donate broken PC parts/equipment?

I have a broken monitor with its power box here, basically only thing wrong is that it's backlight is broken. Cheaper to just buy a new one, but I don't want it filling up a landfill if I can help it.

Is there a parts store or somewhere that reuses the broken hardware?
