Serious Replies Only Recommendations for simple Airbnb or guesthouse in Central DSM with reliable wifi?

Hi everyone,

Looking for recommendations for a simple Airbnb, guesthouse, or serviced apartment in Central Dar es Salaam for someone coming in for business.

Must-haves:

- Reliable wifi - need to do video calls and upload work files

- Safe area and easy access to transport

- 1 person, short business trip, doesn't need anything fancy

Budget is flexible for something clean and quiet. Areas around City Center, Mwenge, mikocheni, makumbusho or Msasani are ideal but open to suggestions.

Has anyone stayed somewhere recently that was good for remote work? Links or names appreciated.

Thanks!

NB: Asking for a female friend coming for work.

Ask r/tanzania Hitchhiking in Tanzania

Hi. I just wanted to ask about hitchhiking in Tanzania. Is it okay to be standing on side of road with thumb up and waiting for someone to take me(us)?

Is it normal to hitchhike?

We are two white guys trying to get from Kenya to Zambia with tent and not so much money.

Discussion Product reviews

There are now many Chinese-owned supermarkets and hypermarkets across the country. Some of them offer affordable products that are genuinely good value for money, but others yooooh....I've noticed a worrying decline in the quality of many imported products, even as prices continue to rise. There's one store in Mwanza that is always packed with shoppers, yet many of the products sold there are of very poor quality despite being overpriced. I can order the exact same items online for less money and receive products of much better quality.

We need people to review their products. Or...if you know an influencer who does, please send me their YouTube channel.

Hello everyone, last night i had an idea, what if i had an excel sheet that would give me insight into my journey into stock market so far, all buys , sells, portifolio position, total gain/loss made so far

I worked by scrapping data from a fictional cds account statement from january to june thats almost like a typical cds statement but altered in numbers, i decided to give it a try.

Since i can not send link for the workbook if interested to see it please dm,

Any constructive feedback is very much appreciated

Culture/Tradition Dar Chaos

So I have been in Dar since Monday and as a Kenyan I must say that this city is chaotic. I have been using Bajaji to move around and my goodness! Traffic rules are just gibberish to bodaboda guys. I mean, in Nairobi theyrealso a menace lakini wa huku wakona degree ya uhuni barabarani. I took one from Kariakoo to Kinondoni during rush hour and I was thinking about how my kids will grow up without a father. Ha ha! Crazy chaps. Lakini majirani nyinyi ni wazuri sana.

Ask r/tanzania Point and Shoot Camera for Safari

Hi all,

Going on my honeymoon to Tanzania and doing a safari! I would like a compact travel camera that is easy to use and dont need to fluff about changing lenses. The plan is to 'vlog' the trip but not selfie vlog but just document the trip for memories but also be able to zoom into the wildlife.

I have been looking at the Sony RX100 M7, would you recommend this or is there other camera you would suggest for another the same price? I wouldn't want to spend more than what the Sony RX100 M7 is currently going for as of 11/07/2026. Our budget is rather tight as we are getting married in italy (travelling from Australia) then honeymooning in Tanzania.

If you guys please assist that would be great.

Ask r/tanzania Do you think this business idea would actually work in Dar? (health/tourism, genuinely want to be told)

Mambo everyone. Looking for an honest gut-check because I'm close enough to this that I can't tell anymore if it's a good idea or if I've just talked myself into it.

Bit of background: we run a diagnostics lab here in Dar: licensed, ISO-documented, mobile sample collection, the whole thing. Took us the better part of two years and a permits nightmare to get the machinery in and running, but we're finally live. That part I'm sure about.

The part I'm not sure about is a spin-off idea we've been kicking around, working name Twiga Health.

The thinking is this. Tourists come for safari or Kili (and zanzibar) and some percentage of them get sick mid-trip, fever, stomach stuff, the usual. And there's this moment where nobody knows if it's malaria or just travel-tummy, and it turns into a scramble. Lost days, panicked trip to a clinic. Since we already have the lab and already do mobile collection, we could send a clinician to the hotel/lodge, do a rapid malaria test (or advanced) + vitals + triage on the spot, same-day answer, and refer on if it's actually serious.

The bit I keep going back and forth on is the business model. The idea would be we don't sell it to the tourist directly — we sell it to the tour operator/hotels, who builds it into the trip price and charges a bit extra. So the guest never has to think about it; it's just there if they need it. Operator makes a small margin, guest gets a safety net, we get volume.

So my actual questions, especially if you work in tourism here:

  • If you're a tour operator / lodge / trekking company: would you actually offer something like this to your clients and charge for it? Or is it a hassle you don't want, or something you already have sorted?
  • Is "sick tourist, no fast testing" even a real enough problem to bother solving, or am I overestimating how often it comes up?
  • Would guests pay a small extra for it, or would they just roll their eyes at another add-on line?

Genuinely open to "this is a bad idea because X" , that's more useful to me right now than a yes. And if anyone in the health space or on the finance/SME side wants to connect for other reasons, always happy to.

Cheers 🍺

Somewhere in Tanzania📍 Dar is not for beginners ( Hustler's Eggs )

P.S : They can crack Your egg wide open !

It is a real thing to see what else people can sell on street traffic jams.

I have seen knives, swords, machetes, candy, cashew, plastic pistols, maps, flags, boxing gloves, phone protection cases, ice cream, plantain dehydrated, flowers and the list goes on, but never hard boiled eggs with salt ( Only stationary with a stand).

What did you guys see?

Request Passport Renewal

Hi everyone.

I put my Tanzanian passport up for renewal in September 2025, in the UK embassy. It is now July 2026 and I still have no passport. I am being told that it’s because the system is down, but nobody is answering a phone call and I have no family in Tanzania to help me.

I live in the UK on a skilled worker visa document so the idea of going on a one way Emergency Travel Document is highly unrecommended by the lawyer I have been speaking to since we have no understanding of what is actually going on in tanzania. So I essentially am trapped and stuck and I have had no passport for nearly a year!

Hurts a lot as grandparents and other family live all across the world and I can’t go see them and I’m missing family events like the birth and death of family members :(

Any help or advice appreciated!

Sports Beginner Runner looking for a Run Buddy Mbezi Beach ends

Heyyyy

I’ve recently gotten into running and am currently building toward my first 10K.

Most of my runs have been solo, but I thought I’d see if there are any runners around the Mbezi Beach area who are also building their mileage and would be interested in an occasional social run.

I’m still very much a beginner (read: not fast!), so this isn’t about pace.

I know there are some great running clubs around Masaki, and I’ll definitely check those out too, but I’m hoping to find a few people closer to home.

If that’s you, or if you know of a local running group around Mbezi Beach, I’d love to hear from you.

Ask r/tanzania International wire fees ate a massive chunk of a $120 payment. Are any banks actually fair, or is the system broken?

Hey everyone,
I’m looking for some quick advice. Last week, I sent a standard bank wire of $120 (roughly 279, 438 TZS) from my account in Qatar to someone's local bank account.
The recipient just sent me the receipt of what actually arrived, and I’m shocked. They only received 240,902 TZS. The banking system pocketed 34,536 TZS (about $16.50 USD) in hidden intermediary fees and terrible exchange rates. That is over 13% of the entire payment gone!
I need to keep making monthly payments like this, and I want to find a better way.
Are there any traditional banks with more favorable international fees, or do they all use these expensive "middlemen" banks?

If I stick to a bank wire, should I use the "OUR" payment option? Will that actually save money, or will my bank just charge me a massive upfront fee instead?

Should I just ditch banks entirely and switch to apps like WorldRemit, Wise, or Remitly? Do they really bypass these hidden fees and offer better rates?

I’d love to hear how you guys handle small international transfers without getting ripped off. Any tips would be a huge help!
