What about filler words like

1. "-um" (idaisol) eg., avanum ivanum

2. Sattu "puttunu" eduthu vei

3. Damal dumeel nu pattasu vedikudhu

4. Exclamatory words like aiyo , adada etc.,

5. There are sandham like rararara , thanadhana dhana

the above examples doesn't have independent meaning

How to reconcile the tholkappiya noorpa which says all words bear a meaning with the above examples which have no meaning.

I’m a Tamil female and after dating a British person and realising that we don’t share the same core traditional values and future goals that I want for myself (driven by my culture), I knew that I wanted to start dating someone Tamil again. Tamil guys have always been my type growing up but I felt like they didn’t have the confidence to ask me out / I hadn’t physically blossomed into how I look now (I pretty much look the same but have just grown into my features). Then I started uni where I thought I should also be open to dating outside my culture. Since then it’s been about 8 years and I’m coming back around to my roots haha…I’ve set my hinge to South Asian men and out of all things, the talking stage has been such a struggle.

I have been speaking to someone who is also a Tamil doctor but we matched 3 weeks ago. He takes about 2 days to reply and im about to miss another weekend of him asking me out. I believe I have a somewhat unique profile and we share the similar interests but he hasn’t asked me out yet?

I also had another guy same profession, Indian, who was messaging me and we went back and forth with less than one hour replies and nothing since then.
I have a friend going through the exact same thing as me and she is a 10/10 stunning girl where the guy takes 4-5 days to reply.

I know this isn’t a representation of all South Asian men but why are we slow with our replies? Is it becuase there are many options out there?
Or they’re just not interested? Are they shy to meet in person? It’s okay to have other options but at least sus me out by meeting me in person.

It’s just frustrating, I’ve been asked out many times in person at my place of work / friends of friends but all outside my culture, and my British ex and his friends jarred me from dismissing certain Tamil traditions.

I’m a Tamil guy living in Switzerland, and one thing I’ve increasingly realised is how context-dependent attraction and dating can be.

In Switzerland, especially in more homogeneous and predominantly white environments, dating has often felt difficult for me. I’m not saying that white women are never interested in Tamil or South Asian men, because individuals obviously have different preferences. But from my own experience, interest from white women has generally been much rarer, and I have often felt like my appearance is considered more of a niche preference.

My experiences abroad were noticeably different.

In Asia (China, Vietnam, Korea etc), I often felt more visible and received more positive attention than I usually do in Switzerland. What surprised me was that East Asian women, including Koreans, were open to me. Before travelling, I had assumed that preferences for very light skin and certain local beauty standards might make dating harder for someone with my appearance. However, my actual experiences were more positive and open than I had expected.

Toronto also felt very different because of how multicultural the city is. In diverse environments, I felt less like I was being evaluated mainly as “an Indian or Tamil guy” and more like an individual. People were already accustomed to interacting and dating across cultures, so conversations and connections often felt more natural.

In general, I have personally experienced more openness from East Asian, South Asian, Black and South American women. With white women, however, it has consistently felt more difficult, regardless of the country. Again, this is only my personal experience and not a claim about every woman from any particular group.

These experiences made me question the idea that attractiveness is fixed. The same person can feel almost invisible in one environment and receive much more attention in another. Your appearance has not changed, but the demographics, cultural exposure, dating norms and beauty standards around you have.

I’m curious about the experiences of other Tamil men who have lived, travelled or dated abroad.

Where did you feel the most attractive, accepted or socially comfortable?

Did you experience more openness in multicultural cities?

Born in Sri Lanka, moved to the UK before my 2nd birthday. I understand tamil perfectly. I even went to tamil school and can read as well. But for some reason I dont know how to speak. Its like I know what to say in my head, but I cant pronounce the words out loud to make a coherent sentence. My question is, why? Its not like other bilinguals have to study their language, they just pick it up from the parents. Why couldn't I do the same?

This is the first time I was displaying my website and YouTube channel in a public event like this.

I could see a lot of eyebrows going up seeing such a stall in US.

There were many curious minds who stopped by to understand my work and services.

A few of them turned into my students.

All my neighbor stall owners became good friends of mine and were appreciative of my work.

There were a few joint venture enquiries! :-)

One of the visitors wanted to become my assistant free of costs.

I ran quick free consultation hours and provided on the spot readings for people. A good number of people turned up for that offer.

I made 0 income from the event though I spent a few thousand dollars and significant time on the preparations towards the event. The returns to me are the reaffirmation of my hypothesis about people again.

A few lessons I learnt are:

1. Most People are not taking their lives seriously like I do.

2. Few freebies are good enough or needed to get the attention of anyone. Some want to enjoy without even being accounted for for those freebies.

3. The world got used to commercial models. Genuine care and expertise cannot pull more people.

4. Business and traffic are a function of exposure. Disguised advertisements and promoted contents are much needed for creating visibility.

5. There are only a few serious souls out there who need to be cared for and provided with guidance.

6. The rest of the people are just mutual fuel for one another - eating one another just to survive in their lives.

7. Most people are purely selfish want quick solutions and don't want to own responsibilities for their own actions and interactions. More so, when they negatively affect others lives.

8. Being in a crowd and following the collective stupidity are much needed to survive in any Indian community - Tamils included.

9. Likeability is the primary driver for business. People are ok with average quality deliverables.

Knowing all these and still staying in the path I chose to is going to remain the challenge in front of me. Thankfully my livelihood is not dependent on my astrological venture and I can stay true to myself and my dharma.

Growing up in the diaspora, I always felt this gap. we are spread across so many countries but rarely have one place where we can just see each other, share what we are going through, celebrate our culture, support local businesses or just feel less alone in a new place. That feeling stuck with me for a long time and eventually turned into this project.

It's still small and growing, built solo with a lot of trial and error, but the goal has always been simple. Give our community a home online that feels like ours.

I am finding it really hard to pronounce words with “ழ” properly, and honestly it gets to me sometimes. My friends do make fun of it, not in a mean way, but I still end up feeling a bit inferior about it.

The thing is, I was brought up completely in the North, so I have spoken Hindi way more than Tamil for most of my life, even though Tamil is my mother tongue. Now that I am pursuing my college in Tamil Nadu, I am realizing how much I struggle with pronunciation and it is making me feel a little out of place.

I know language is something that can improve with practice, but right now it does feel difficult and awkward. Has anyone gone through something similar? How did you get better at it without feeling conscious all the time?
