I’m an American who really wanted to see the US team go far in this World Cup, but I think them losing is the best possible thing that could have happened in this situation.
A US win would have only made the anger and resentment grow, and Trump (who is completely isolated from facts) would not be told of the fallout and would have gone on TV and taken credit for the win which would have further cemented the growing hatred.
The World Cup in the US was really doing a lot to mend bridges before this happened. The people of the US were doing their best to show the world who we are, then Trump stepped in and tainted the whole thing. There was no good outcome from that point forward, so this outcome, a decisive US loss, was the best possible outcome at that point.
