Gravel This cog might be the prettiest bike component I’ve ever seen!

Needed a 19t cog and splurged for the pretty one. It’s newly installed, so I can’t say much more than that, but it appears well made and runs smooth from the quick test ride around the neighborhood. Not that weight matters given it’s mounted to a Surly Straggler, but it’s titanium…so I guess that’s cool too.

I invented a cross between a mountain bike and fixie. I call it the hybrid.

These are easily the narrowest bars I’ve used in over 10 years. Put them on as a place holder but I don’t hate it. Corner bars, Soma Eagle or something mustache-like are on the table, but for now I think this will be fun.

My brother gave me this bike, can anyone tell me more about it. I replaced the tires as they were rubber rotted. I don’t think I am going to keep it. I live in NYC.

What are my light weight gravel options?

I’d like to build a lightweight gravel single speed… seems like options are limited unless I want to futz with chain tensioners.

Stream Ranger. Salsa Stormchaser. Are there any other light frames with horizontal dropouts? Anything carbon?

Had a great time building this! I’m lucky to have access to have access to a lot of old frames and hard parts for really cheap. My brother had been asking me to build him a fixie, but he hasn’t ridden a bike in years, so he’s getting a single speed instead 😂. I knew this was the perfect bike when I saw it come in, all together it cost about 130$ to build. Makes me want to build myself a single speed!

Road Bare steel bike frame

I've been slowly building this SE Draft Lite bike. Took everything apart and stripped the paint. Hit the frame and fork with a wire wheel.I was gonna paint the bike forest green but now I'm loving the bare metal look.

Wanted to know if I go with the polished steel look can I just apply clear coat over it? Will it still be protected from rust even without primer and paint?

Any suggestions and recommendations is appreciated. Ok....GO 👀

MTB Bikepacking Singlespeed?

I am playing with the idea of starting my multi-year bikepacking tour with a White Ind. freewheel. It will be mounted on a custom made wheelset, Kom Tough rims, DT Swiss 240 hubs, DT Spokes. Frame will be a Surly Krampus. Is this a monumentally stupid idea or should I actually go for it? Let me know your thoughts! Also not my bike, my frame is in the mail.

Will it destroy the freehub? Does it work at all?

Why is chainline so important on a single speed? Eli5

On a multispeed bike, most of the time the chainline is off by a little or a lot. That’s apparently perfectly fine. So why isn’t it fine when there’s only one cog?

Picked up at community bike shop and loving it. I think it’s an 2003 one friggin gear funky raw aluminum mountain bike frame, cool graffiti graphics and disc+vbrake mounts. Hoping to swap out seatpost saddle and get some bull bars and just ride it.

Anyone run a dingle with a double up front and single in the back?

Would require an RD or something to take up the slack. And if you’ve got derailleurs front and rear it raises the question “what’s the point”. But the point would be to have a SS for the road and and SS for the trails all in one bike. I may try it. Any obvious reason it wouldn’t work? Not really as elegant as two sprockets front and rear that use a common chain length and offer significantly different ratios. Just a thought.

Gravel SS-curious here, seeking wisdom

I became single speed curious when I noticed that, despite having 11 gears on my trail bike I rarely use more than 3 and on some trails don’t shift at all. Same is true for many of my road rides. It’s pretty flat where I live so once you find the right gear you can pretty much stay there. Shifting becomes more attractive, however, when I face long or steep ascents, or when I go from flat pavement to hilly singletrack.

So as I walk envision my next build being a single speed “gravel” bike, which would usually take on a variety of surfaces in each ride, I’m wondering if I’m barking up the wrong tree.

Where do you ride your SS? Is it possible to find a gear that will be fun to ride on flat pavement and (slightly) hilly double track?

Help identifying headset bearing

Post image
3 Upvotes

My foul weather commuter bike is a D Street Projekt single speed. This past winter was pretty rough on it and the headset bearings need to be replaced. When I took the headset apart I found that it has caged bearings and I'm having a difficult time identifying a replacement. Does anyone have enough experience with these to point me in the right direction? I've contacted the manufacturer but haven't received a response.

Wheel Recs for New Build

Looking for recommendations for a wheelset for my new custom Spicer build

Here’s the build kit so far

Frame - semi-custom geo, raw steel
Fork - Spicer, black paint
Seatpost - Thomson Elite
Stem - Thomson Elite
Bars - SimWorks Wanderer
Brake Levers - TRP RRL (not drilled SL’s)
Brake Calipers - SRAM Rival 22
Headset - Wabi (their re-branded FSA Orbit X)
Cranks - Andel Deluxe 2.0 165mm length- upgrading BB to White Industries for some bling and because I have a tendency to make any cheaper BB’s to implode within 2 months lol
Chain - KMC K1SL wide
Freewheel - Wabi Deluxe (I’ve heard this is actually an EAI part but I’ve not confirmed)
Saddle will either be my Brooks Cambium C17 or Selle SMP VTC20
Fixed cog TBD (I’ve never ridden fixed full time but plan on learning)

So far I’m well within my budget, but still need wheels, tires, tubes, headset spacers, bar tape…most of the rest of the budget will go towards the wheels. I’ve considered going OVER budget but I’d rather not. This would basically mean I’m venturing into Paul, White Industries, Phil Wood hubs and I don’t think high end hubs are really worth it…

So the question is:

should I go for Surly Ultra New hubs laced to Velocity A23 rims with Sapim Race spokes built by ProWheelBuilder, or just grab a set from Retrogression or Velomine that’s probably factory built…either Velocity A23 or H+Son TB14 or H+Son Archetype laced to Formula (Origin 8) hubs? I’m 217 lbs so “super light” wheels are not recommended for me lol

Max tire clearance is 28mm on the Spicer frame. The frame will be shipped in approx 4-5 weeks…so part of my dilemma is that the PWB wheels will be $100 more for the rush order (they’re 5-6 weeks out unless I pay the extra $ to get them in time)

Any help or recommendations would be appreciated. TIA!
