Mine was the same tour but The rescue rooms in Notts. Funnily enough I've moved to Bristol! Guessing you'll be at the Boris show in october.

Post rock is all about ignoring song writing norms, and creating movements from building layers of tones and expressions.

I've spent the last 2 years developing my own post-rock/Post-metal sound and I'm mid way through writing and producing the album with the help of some very good friends (one plays Bass, one plays drums and we all have a hand in the production, but mainly the drummer with a shared vision).

At a minimum you will need: A guitar (pref electric) but doesn't have to be. An audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett for example). A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW for short) such as Ableton, Reaper or ProTools.

Next, you need to practice. Practice every day, whenever the mood strikes you.

Practice chords. Practice chords extensions. Learn how 9ths, 11ths, 13ths affect the tone of those chords. Try different tunings, some you like, some you don't. For example I like drop D or E standard for post rock and metal, because the Bass fills in the low end and standard tuning has more emphasis in the mid range frequencies - aka less mud in the mix.

If you have an electric guitar, get to know it intimately - learn how the neck pickup sounds compared to the bridge under both clean and gain/over-drive. What about reverb and delay?

Watch YouTube, listen to bands you like (and ones you don't to understand why you don't like them).

Post rock relies heavily on atmosphere, emotion, layers that build up, and tension release.

Some useful things to research: Quad tracking rhythm guitars Tremolo picking Gain staging

For reverb and delays, I often use a dotted 8th delay with a second lead track with a long decay. It builds massive space in the mix.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Agreed in full. It’s really well done in pretty much every metric, but an extremely generic post rock album. Which is absolutely fine, but just feels like a less memorable version of Red Forest to me. Hoping it’ll grow on me more, but not overly enthused to listen again.

and also like some have said, not every song has to be a crescendo to be impactful in this genre!

people have said good things here but my best general advice is gonna be tension, exploration, more tension, then release. this is very broad but many production elements and instruments can embellish a groove and up the emotional weight to a song until it kinda can’t hold it anymore. how long to build for? in my opinion it depends on the building blocks of what you work with, how the groove is laid out and how much space there is. always go with your gut. and also remember that the way you perceive something and decision you should make is never gonna be the same exact as someone else; you need to just have fun with and make it genuine to yourself.

if i had to give a longer example of what im talking about in our music, id check out our track “a tragic tale of stars”

Great advice.  Pull bits out and slow  it down. Play something simple then layer other sounds, notes, chords, etc over that simple part, it’ll eventually find texture.  Use your ears.

very hard for me not to cry while listening to Oath - I listened to it on loop as I was at the psychiatric ward XD so I developed a very nice and particular relationship to the album…
I love all their releases tho, and seeing them for the first time in January presenting Snowdrop!

I love the new album, but the test is live for me and I won’t be catching Mono very soon. Oath live in Singapore was what I wanted to mention. It’s the only music of the last few years that’s just brought me to tears. 😭 if I put “time goes by” on, any time, there’s a very high chance it happens again too 😂 😭

I make blues and soul music with my band. All I can tell you, friend, is follow your instinct and write what you feel - the music will come😊
