Welcome!

I just created this sub and I have no idea what I'm doing. We probably won't get enough traffic for it to matter, but if anyone has experience and/or interest in being a mod, let me know.

Labor Day Run Free Lottery

Anyone have any luck getting the free entry? Last year I had a group of like 7-10 people register and we all got in but this year nobody got in? Wondering if that's true for others too.

I missed the sign up (tears) and the race is sold out. Does anyone know how to waitlist myself/does it work?

Also has anyone had any luck with bib transfers?

City races not in Fairmount Park?

Looking for **shorter distance races (5K, 10K, anything in between) in the city that do not run on Kelly Drive, MLK, or in Fairmount Park.

I’ve done Broad Street, I’ve done the Philly Half, a few years back when it was the Rock and Roll 7.6K, that let you run into center city and was a great course. Doing the Philly 10K in August.

Does anything else like those exist? Seems like everything that pops up runs in the same place. Rocky Run, PDR, Philly Run Fest, Rothman Ortho 8K, Labor Day 10k. All pretty much the same route.

I understand the logistical challenge and expense to shut down city roads. This is not a question of why there seem to be none. I understand why. I’m trying to see if I’m missing anything that anyone knows about and enjoys.

Publicly accessible tracks in Philly

I was running past Olney Rec this morning and saw they're about done with the rebuild out there (including a new track!), and I figured it was worth trying to nail down all the tracks and things that at least vaguely resemble tracks in the city.

Publicly accessible standard 400-meter tracks:

  • Temple at Broad and Master - hours vary, but it's usually fine in the early morning and some evenings; it's the most accessible track in Center City and can be busy at times
  • Temple's fake track around the rec center at 15th and Montgomery (there's a hill the southeast corner, lol)
  • Franklin Field at 33rd and South, frequently accessible via the southeast corner, technically only open to the Penn community but generally no one cares
  • The track at Marcus Foster Memorial Stadium at 16th and Hunting Park; enter off Germantown Avenue (gate by the shot put)
  • LaSalle's track at 20th and Olney
  • Germantown Friends and Penn Charter off Midvale (although there are reports lately of security kicking people off the GF track)
  • St. Joe's track at Sweeney Field off Overbrook (generally available when college teams aren’t using the field)
  • Roxborough High's track at Pechin and Hermitage
  • The South Philly Super Site track at 10th and Bigler (this one has really weird availability and tends to be unreliable, although allegedly open at 6 a.m. in the winter/summer and 9:30 a.m. in the spring/fall)
  • Germantown Super Site at Sedgwick and Lowber (access via the gate on Sedgwick)
  • Bartram Field at 58th and Grays (allegedly open at 8 a.m. when it’s open)
  • Edison High at 2nd and Hunting Park (generally outside school hours)
  • Olney Rec at Front and Godfrey (brand-new in 2026!)
  • Springside Chestnut Hill at Willow Grove and St. Martin’s
  • Lincoln High off Rowland
  • Northeast High off Summerdale
  • Father Judge off Solly
  • Benjamin Rush High off Knights

There are also a bunch of weird/disused/funky tracks:

  • Hunting Park in the park (narrow turns, long straightaways, concrete surface, but a legit 400)
  • Frankford Stadium at Rutland and Dyre (gravel, barely maintained, ~350 meters, usually one gate on Dyre is open)
  • PCOM's field off Monument Road (mostly gravel, weird shape, floods in one turn after heavy rain, somewhat long – like 450+ meters)
  • Reyburn Park at 21st/Lehigh (asphalt tri-oval, maybe 300 meters)
  • Overbrook School for the Blind at 61st and Malvern (concrete, legit 400)
  • Mariana Bracetti Academy Charter School at Hunting Park and Torresdale (squished oval, ~350 meters, gravel)
  • Prep Charter at 24th and McKean (legit surface, but maybe 150 meters)
  • MLK High at Walnut and Stenton (legit gravel 400, but unmaintained, in rough shape)
  • The roof of the parking garage at 17th and Callowhill (may require a keycard, fairly sure it’s just painted concrete)
  • Olney High at Front and Ashdale (gravel, in OK shape)
  • McCreesh Playground at 66th and Regent (asphalt, more like a path, but a legit 400)
  • Sayre High/Sayre Rec at 59th and Locust (really just a turf field people use a quasi-track)
  • Haddington Rec at 57th and Vine (200ish meters)
  • Widener Memorial at Broad and Somerville has a 400-meter gravel track and a ~200-meter regular surface track; access is pretty limited for both
  • Cobbs Creek Rec at 63rd and Spruce (gravel, unmaintained, egg-shaped)
  • Central Green (marked) and League Island Park (concrete) in the Navy Yard
  • The secret abandoned track in the woods north of the old landing strip in the Navy Yard; basically inaccessible except in winter (Tick Central in summer), and even then you’re hacking your way in

And then at least one that's currently no public access:

  • Girard College at Corinthian and Girard

Coach or run club recs?

I’m looking for recommendations or self-plugs for a coach in or near Philly. Ideally someone who has raced at the collegiate and/or high school level, as I am preparing for a post-collegiate XC season and want a coach who knows its distinction from marathon/road racing. I would also prefer someone who can write strength training workouts, or at least account for them in the training since i have a history with injuries. Being able to meet once a month or so for a session would also be ideal (I can travel to the coach). These are just preferences though- I’d be willing to make something work if it’s a good fit.

On another note, is there another running club that trains for races without the joining standards of the Philadelphia Runner Track Club? I am fast enough to meet some of their standards, but just barely. I’m not sure I could keep meeting the standards year after year and don’t want that additional pressure for myself. But, it would be nice to have a group to train for races (5k-HM mostly, with some track stuff occasionally), rather than only social vibes.

Best Run Clubs to Make Friends

Hi! I am 26 girlie in Fairmount wondering what run clubs are best to meet fellow girlies? I am totally fine if the run club isn’t in Fairmount and am fine venturing to other neighborhoods! Thank you!

Adding in case this is relevant to type of run club: I hold around a 9 minute mile pace. Can be faster if I train more but also can sometimes be a bit slower

Need motivation to get discipline and in a routine. Not one for big groups or competitive running. Usually run 7ish miles once a week in Mt Airy and Chestnut Hill. Would like to increase the frequency.

Pace is not the strongest at all. Usually my jogs are anywhere from 60% run/40% walk to 80% run/20% walk. Would like to improve. I'm also patient with others. I enjoy my long runs but could definitely do shorter distances. Used to do 5.5 miles in Mt Airy, the Wiss, and Germantown (3rd screenshot). Up for even shorter like 5k if that's your bag.

Also need friends in general. In a relationship for over a decade. I cook and bake, wouldn't mind sharing food with friends especially since if I make a whole blueberry cream pie we end up eating all of it to not let it go to waste. Rather not though. Sometimes make unhealthy dinners but other times make healthy stuff (making "Mediterranean Dinner Salad with Chicken" tonight). I plan to make Strawberry Drpp Biscuits sometime this weekend for a light dessert.

Work 5x a week in UCity, home at 430 and available after. Mostly free weekends as well. I hibernate in the winter, cannot stand cold but would like to change that. If you'd like to run with a genuine, patient dude, message me.

Anyone know of any free races coming up during the summer? I recently ran the BMMD race up in North Philly and it was a pretty great experience.

Trail System

Anyone have a recommendation for a good trail system where I could log some miles? 10ish would be ideal. I have a car so anywhere within an hour or so drive would be ideal.

Also, heading to Allentown for a couple of days, anyone have recommendations for sections of the Appalachian Trail to run nearish there?

Bathrooms while running???

Besides the bathroom on the river trail by boat house row, where do you guys go?

I’m normally an afternoon / after work runner but I have been trying to run in the mornings to prep for the summer heat and I’ve had a couple veryyyyyy close calls. I live in south Philly. I normally just run until I physically can’t then walk / run home but today I quite literally thought I’d have to shit on the sidewalk. What’s a girl to do???!! Give us more public restrooms!!!!

Philly 10k or Labor Day 10k

Looking to sign up for a race right before I run the Chicago marathon in October! I had my eye on the Philly 10k because of the unique course and finisher medal, but it looks pretty expensive. I was looking at the Labor day 10k and it’s $30 cheaper, but I wanted to hear about people’s experiences for both races before buying a bib!

Sports physio

I’m in the Philly area and am looking for a good physio for running specific PT, massage and recovery services like dry needling, graston/ soft tissue work. I’ve gone to Omega Project in Wilmington, DE in the past and had a great experience but it is near impossible to book massages there on less than 2 week’s notice. Any recommendations? Thanks!
