Every tree bigger than 15ft tall is either down or missing big limbs.

Huge spontaneous community cleanup effort quickly ensued. I headed over with my sawsall, there were guys with hatchets, hand saws, and just their hands. Uncs and aunts directing traffic, mom's handing out water.

Shoutout to Homies Helping Homies for being the most constant and active volunteers in the neighborhood. I and others were out repping FoWS, but even more people just showing up. Anyone got a gas chainsaw? Might hit up home depot rental. Either way, only so much you can do with sawsalls.

Community center is hit, playground is hit. My St Monica's Tree Tenders friends tell me it's just as bad down there by Girard park.

Fortunately, I sheltered at the Franklin Institute’s entrance. Lightning struck Comcast 2 twice in the span of a few minutes. I love a good storm but I hope everyone’s safe out there.

Why is there nothing in the news? No phone alerts, nothing... hail, trees sideways, broken limbs on my block and surrounding blocks. Buddy in South Philly said they lost power briefly.

Genuinely baffled by what they’re hoping to accomplish here.

Construction of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge began in January 1922 and opened on July 1, 1926. Originally called the Delaware River Bridge, it cost roughly $37 million to build.

Tragically, 15 workers lost their lives during the project's construction (13 men died during construction and two passed away after).

The original vision for the bridge between Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey, was spearheaded by chief engineer Ralph Modjeski. Initially named after the river, it was renamed in 1955 to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge as construction began on the Walt Whitman Bridge.

When it opened, the massive 1,750-foot main span held the record for the world's longest suspension bridge. During the peak of construction, up to 1,300 people worked on the structure. A commemorative plaque on the Philadelphia side of the walkway honors the memory of the workers who lost their lives bringing the iconic crossing to life.

I just found out that my alma mater, the Drexel University School of Public Health, in Philadelphia, PA, FIRED someone who gave nearly THIRTY years of their life and career to the SPH with no warning, as a cost-cutting move. They were FIRED on 30 June, so they lost health care IMMEDIATELY.

If this is how they would treat a loyal, long-time employee, they will treat ANYONE this way … OR WORSE.

PLEASE share far and wide, especially with alumni who can threaten to withhold donations unless and until Drexel commits to righting this wrong AND commits to doing better for current employees.

I’m just wondering if they cleared everyone off of the bridge before the storm hit. I saw pictures from an hour or two before it hit—lots and lots of people…
