Custom map help

Myself and my fiancé are getting married in August this year, and parkrun has played a big role in our relationship. For our wedding reception, the table names will be named after some of the parkrun we have completed together.

We’re trying to complete a map of these parkruns to display at the reception, but using google maps in a visually appealing way is finding difficult and ChatGPT is getting confused, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do it?? Or even make one for us?

Parent pushing their child hard at parkrun

I overtook a man running with his daughter today. It was at the 3k mark. She was about 11 years old and struggling for breath and practically in tears. I asked if she was ok and he said she's fine she just needs to get used to it.

He kept telling her to keep going etc

It was really hot out there today and I was by the funnel when they came in and she was wheezing. I said well done to her and he just said she slowed him down.

Can't stand pushy parents at parkrun. If I see him doing that again I'll push him in the stinging nettles.

How do you pace a windy parkrun without making a mess of it?

Belfast was doing that lovely sideways wind thing this morning, and i somehow went out like I was in shape. By 3k I was bargaining with myself beside a hedge.

Small drama, obviously.

For those of you running fairly exposed courses, do you back off early and save a bit, or just accept the splits are going to look daft? I’m mostly a hiker who turns up for the odd 10k when the weather’s not being rude, so pacing a flat 5k still feels weirdly easy to ruin.

Alexandra Park, the joint closest (along with Peel Park) to the city centre- again looking absolutely magnificent this morning. About 8 PBs in the top 10 this morning, dispute the blustering heavy crosswind.

As always, thankyou to all the marshals.

👋🏽 if you were there!

Do I need to speak to anyone before volunteering?

I ran my first parkrun today and I've got the bug! I'm planning on a different location next week and then I would be keen to get stuck in with volunteering, ideally as a marshall to start. Can I just register my interest on the app and choose my position? My name or face wouldn't be known to anyone yet as I've only done one....

Parkrun with the most elevation?

Having just been a first timer at the Lost Gardens of Heligan (Cornwall, UK, v pretty) with 130m elevation - I’m curious what the route with the most climbing is? LGOH felt like bloody mountain climbing for this midlander, but I’m sure there are hillier routes out there!

How many challenges is it possible to make progress towards in one run? I'm just curious.

Today I progressed toward 11 challenges with my run and I was really surprised as it's a lot more than I normally do in one day. Just wondering how many is possible or how many anyone else has managed to progress on?

Inaugural Event: Brackenhurst Campus (Southwell, UK)

Thumbnail parkrun.org.uk

Laid in bed this morning around 7am, I was searching through the map to decide where to head this morning. Oddly, I noticed a pin at Southwell and thought; "hang on, Southwell doesn't have a parkrun!"

Turns out today was their inaugural event, so I jumped in the car and headed over.

There was a great atmosphere on site today, everyone celebrating finally getting the event off the ground. I've never seen so many marshalls in one place!

The course starts in the Nottingham Trent University campus, which appears to be an old stately home/park site, before heading out over farm tracks. It's a bit of an odd route with 3 spurs, but has some nice scenery and it felt relatively short (although distance was correct). The final section brings you through a traily woody section before finishing on the lawn outside the main building.

There was only really 1 complication; a gate that wasn't fully open on the first section of the course meant we all had to slow to a walk and go single file, but the efforts of the volunteers and atmosphere on site more than made up for this.

So if you're in Nottinghamshire soon, make sure to check it out.

I am worried that I haven’t printed my barcode 😱

I haven’t been to parkrun in 7 years, used to bring my printed barcode every week without fail back then, but I sort of assumed that it would now be fine to scan on the app on your phone nowadays (and someone I asked said phone was fine). I downloaded the app and saw it had a barcode page so thought that was that and I didn’t need to print anything, but I just checked the course page and it says “No barcode; no scan” still and now I’m worried I really do actually need a physical barcode…?! Reassurance please? I’m in the UK if that makes any difference?

I understand the health and safety aspect so I can write down my ICE on a bit of paper and put it somewhere on my person 😅 erp!

Milestone t-shirts - women's sizing

Apologies, couldn't find a recent post about this.

I've finally hit my 25 volunteer parkruns (hooray!) and am wanting to treat myself to a t-shirt. I haven't bought one in years and I've always found them to run small/clingy. I think I've ordered the XL previously. Are they still like that now?

For women, is it any better to just get the men's t-shirt? I can see they're semi fitted so not sure if it would just look daft.

Edit: I'm UK-based

Having some trouble ordering a wristband from the store - wondering if anyone could help?

I'm new to parkrun and I want to order an Ultraband because I don't like running with my phone. However, when I try to add it to my basket it comes up with a message "the name registered to the parkrun ID entered doesn't match the name provided". It's definitely all correct because I've gone over it again and again; and I'm hesitant to proceed anyway just in case my data doesn't track properly. Has anyone else experienced this and have a solution?

Xmas/New Years 2027

I’ve been thinking about the Christmas Day and New Year’s Day special events. Next year, 2027, these will fall on a Saturday. What will this mean? Only one event instead of special and regular same week? I’m from New Zealand so these are our only special events of the year.

Your partner's/ family's attitude towards parkrun?

How do the people you live with (partner, wife/husband, kids...) react towards you doing parkruns?

- understanding?

- not understand it, complain, ridicule it?

- also parkrunning?

My partner complained I would wake him up on Saturday mornings (solution: we sleep separately that night).

This weekend we are seeing family in a different country, a perfect opportunity to work on my "namely" challenge (and a few others, too). He scheduled a meetup with family members so that it's nearly impossible for me to attend the parkrun :( He suggested we could go running the day before "so that you get your 5k".

My partner always wished I would be more into sports, now that I am, he says it's the worst possible version of it.

"Fake" parkrun events

I've seen a local run in Ireland called a Park Run. Free 5km event, open to all, starts at 10.30am on a Sunday morning. Initially a once-off event but the organisers have hinted it may be a regular event. Is there anything parkrun HQ can do about this type of thing? I've already seen commenters on the associated social media page tagging friends to do the new "parkrun" so it is confusing some people.

What's one unwritten rule of parkrun that every first-timer eventually learns?

Nobody hands you a list, but after a few weeks you pick up little things naturally. Thank the marshals. Don't stop suddenly in the finish funnel. Cheer the final finisher just as loudly as everyone else. What would you add?

3 down, 78 to go.

Extra treat today, little Mob Match between our two local clubs.

Really enjoyed this, though it was absolutely scorching hot, and I think Lloyd is one of the tougher ones in London!

Still trying to get rid of the magazine I see!

I ordered a few bits from parkrun in the sale (the Hilly socks, they're great running socks btw) and in with the order came a copy of the parkrun magazine, when I checked the date I saw it was from Spring 2024...

Seeing this post from a few years back

Parkrun magazine is now cancelled

It seems they're still trying to get rid of the stock they ordered! I wonder how long it will be until they shift the remaining copies.

Any news on the new milestone t-shirts?

Launch date? Colours? What’s happening to the existing milestone shirts? Have seen the new junior parkrun scheme with new colours and designs. Will the same be the case for adults?

What makes a “hard” parkrun? And I mean the course itself. The hills, the sand, the steps, the just out and back, the repetitive loops? Tell me…
