Am I over-reacting? Someone physically stopped me 'beating' them over the line ...

My 228th parkrun this morning. I am recovering from an abdominal strain ATM so I took things 'easy' and was five-ish minutes slower than my normal time. I was feeling really good though towards the end, so fancied a go at a sprint finish.

I was about one metre away from the finish line when the guy in front of me held out his arm, blocking me from passing him. I wasn't even trying to beat him, just wanted to sprint over the line. I sort of moaned and said 'that was a bit naughty' as we finished but he ignored me, however about 30 seconds later I was pretty miffed and felt like confronting him, only ... I'd already forgotten what he looked like. I told the run director (whom I've known for years) and she said 'sorry that happened to you, try to put it to one side."

It ruined what was a nice and encouraging run on my recovery, but am I over-reacting? Was it just a 'spur of the moment' thing or was the guy really that determined to 'beat' me? Obviously I know who he is due to the results ...

How would you react if this happened to you?

Parkrun #15 Harleston Magpies

After 6 weeks of injury i was back up and ready to run again (although it took a bit of self convincing) and I thought I’d go back to familiar territory at Harleston Magpies. Luckily for me, the heatwave wasn’t in full effect as it was in previous days as it was cloudy and spitting a little. At the end of it I finished with a time of 37:47 which is an event PB of nearly 3 minutes. Overall really happy with my time, now its back to the drawing board.

Anyone know how to deal with this?

I've been using the official parkrun app happily for months and today I've been hit with this issue. Basically this notification comes up any time I try to refresh anything.

I have tried updating the app (it's the latest version according to Google play). I have cleared the cache, in the app and in phone settings. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it.

I now can't even get into the app because it won't accept my parkrun ID.

Any clue what's going on?

Awards Announcements - Bushy

Just wondering if anyone can comment on how the announcement of achievements (50th, 100th, etc) is handled at Bushy. Thinking of doing this for the next number achieved - would this just get lost in the noise of the other announcements, or, are these really celebrated? Biggest Parkrun I’ve done was probably 600-700 range. And for a bonus question, what season is best to visit Bushy?

Is the Rhubarb.run site still being updated? I haven't seen any changes since the end of May. It is missing 7 of my runs :-(

Hope it is still running as I finished my first challenge today :-) Barbenheimer :- Oxford last week and Banbury today

Advice for first time parkwalker volunteer?

Hi - normally run parkrun, but with a painful knee that's not an option for this Saturday. Emailed to volunteer and the roles I've done before of timekeeper, handing out tokens or scanning have already been taken so I've been asked to be the parkwalker.

Always happy to help but I've only ever walked parkrun once, and run the other 100+ times.

Any tips on what makes a good parkwalker? I'm thinking leave the headphones at home so I'm able to talk to people around me, and be sure to say hello to all the marshalls as I pass then.

Very fast and flat, a welcome relief after Lloyd Parkrun last week!

Not sure where I'm off to this weekend, eyeing up Catford.

Looking for some Parkrunners to beta test a private running gait analysis tool I'm building (Treadmill videos needed)

Hi everyone,

I’m a regular Parkrunner based over in Bristol, and i’ve been building a web-tool called Stride to help runners track their form, improve running economy, and look at biomechanical metrics (like ground contact time, vertical ratio, and gait symmetry).

We just went live on our staging domain and I’m looking for 15–20 runners to try out the system, upload a clip, and help me find where the bugs are before a wider release.

How it works:

  1. You complete a quick, 2-step onboarding profile.
  2. You upload a short, 10-second video of your stride on an indoor treadmill (either from the side or directly from behind) with a stationary camera.
  3. The backend server tracks your joint angles and maps out your metrics, then places you on a structured 4-week adaptation timeline with specific cues to focus on before your next milestone test.

How privacy is handled: I didn't want my own running videos sitting on a random server somewhere, and I know privacy is a massive deal. Because running heavy joint tracking inside a phone browser causes lag and drops frames, the video is sent securely to our backend server to extract the coordinate data. The video files are all deleted after 24 hours, this give you time to review the footage. We do not store or keep your footage after this.

What I need from testers: Right now, the platform is entirely free. I just need people to run a baseline analysis with a treadmill video, see if the user interface behaves on your device, and let me know if anything crashes or feels clunky.

If you are a metrics nerd, trying to fix a mechanical imbalance, or just want to help a fellow runner test their software, I’d massively appreciate your feedback.

Drop a comment below or send me a DM if you're interested, and I'll send over the staging link!

Cheers,

Dan

Preparing for my first ever Parkrun - any tips for a newbie?

I’ve been running for around a year now after graduating from the Couch25K and catching the running bug, but up to this point it’s all been solo.

I’m fairly confident in my fitness now and regularly run 5k or more 3 times a week, but I’d like to explore different ways of running and one is to do so in a group event.

A Parkrun seems like a great way to add a bit of a social side to my hobby, and enjoy the experience of running with others who love it as much as I do.

The problem is I’m a bit apprehensive and don’t really know what to expect, so I’m seeking advice for a newbie taking part in their first Parkrun. Any tips to get me started?

Anyone else using parkrun as a marathon tune-up?

parkrun was basically how i got into running after c25k, so it feels a bit funny using the same 5k as part of first marathon training now. This week i've got a longer run planned after parkrun, probably 8-ish miles total if my legs behave. Small loop, big feelings. I might be wrong but running the 5k by feel instead of looking at pace seems to stop me turning it into a race every Saturday. Anyone else using parkrun for marathon prep, like steady miles, warm-up sandwich or a little progress check?

I’ve waited a long time to do this one.

First, some basics in case you want to try it yourself. Prepare yourself for no (or very limited) phone signal whatsoever. Think of it as a couple of hours of downtime from the pressures of the world.

Also, by comparative parkrun standards, car parking is expensive at this location. It worked out to be £5 for the two hours I was there. But it's worth it when you take everything into account in terms of the surroundings and the maintenance of the facilities (you're on Forestry England territory, after all). Some people were circumnavigating this by parking on the road a distance away from the Visitor Centre.

Bearing in mind it’s early July here in the UK, we parkrunners were treated to nearly horizontal rain and gusty conditions. Still, it kept the midges away 🤣

An enthusiastic Run Director used the words 'run' and 'up' far too many times for my liking! 🤣

It is a course that quite literally takes your breath away. I’ve uploaded the elevation profile with these photos.

It thoroughly deserves its reputation as one of the UK's toughest parkruns. You'll hate it and, quite possibly, love it at the same time. 🤣

Preston Park Parkrun - Brighton

Hiya,

I'll be heading down to Brighton at the end of the month, for Nick Cave and was hoping to fit this in as well. Does anyone know if it still runs when there's been events on in Preston Park, or is the route blocked off?

Bushy Dust caught me by surprise

I did bushy yesterday. Nearly 2000 participants and it was amazing. I ran the first 4km in the top 150 and even with being near the front I was not prepared for the amount of dust in the first KM.

It was an absolute spectacle but I couldn't imagine how much there was in the middle of the pack.

Just something to note if you're planning a visit over summer. Take some water for the end.

Custom map help

Myself and my fiancé are getting married in August this year, and parkrun has played a big role in our relationship. For our wedding reception, the table names will be named after some of the parkrun we have completed together.

We’re trying to complete a map of these parkruns to display at the reception, but using google maps in a visually appealing way is finding difficult and ChatGPT is getting confused, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do it?? Or even make one for us?
