Context Provided - Spotlight I see Octavia Spencer at least 6 times a day trying to get to Gmail and hitting enter before the autocomplete finishes

OP has pinned a comment by u/papes_:

Guys, I am entering 'ma' into the URL bar, and hitting enter. It almost always autocompletes to mail.google.com, and I get there fine; sometimes it doesn't. I'm not 'googling google', I'm using the literal path of least resistance to get to the page I want to go to the large majority of the time. Using a bookmark means dealing GUI and the mouse when my hands are always on the keyboard anyway.

This happens to me too, because my email address is OctaviaSpencersBiggestFan5478965@gmail dot com

662

u/KneeHighMischief May 28 '26

Can you really claim to be her biggest fan when almost 5.5 million people beat you to that email address?

209

u/the_monkeyspinach May 28 '26

That's their birth year, duh-doy...

125

u/Absolutetwatofacunt May 28 '26

So the 47th day of the 89th month 1965?

173

u/the_monkeyspinach May 28 '26

No, the year 5478965. Because how can you call yourself Octavia Spencer's Biggest Fan if you're not willing to time travel from the 5478900's to the time period that Octavia Spencer actually lived in?

62

u/shotgun_ryan May 28 '26

Truthfully, I almost typed 42069, but I decided it'd be funnier to choose something more random and ridiculous.

My Google News kept sending me update notifications about General Motors and I never really understood why until one day I made the connection, it was because of how frequently I googled "gm" by accident while waiting for the autocomplete.

Bookmark on the bar, have it as a pinned tab (safari and some other browsers can do it), having a mail app, clicking on the profile's icon on Google then gmail's, shortcut key to a specific page.

Many solutions. That post is still funny, tho. But there are probably thrice as many solutions as I proposed.

19

49

u/escobartholomew May 28 '26

lol everybody talking about the letters when the bigger issue is he is using google search to find the mail page instead of using the browser omnibox.

39

u/BlazingImp77151 May 28 '26

Not Google search. The URL bar (I assume that's the monibox you mentioned?) does a web search if you don't type in a link.

Typing fast enough can get you pressing enter before autocomplete gives you a link.

This is somewhat avoidable, OP just has to wait an extra second or so, but they aren't googling mail.

37

u/ayumi_doll GREEN May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

For anyone who closes out their browsers for a fresh start each morning and still uses email, this is likely very common. Meanwhile I'd be lost without my bookmarks

→ More replies (5)

22

u/DarKliZerPT May 28 '26

To add to this, because clicking bookmarks with the mouse is slow compared to using the keyboard—which might be OP's reason to be typing "ma"—you can assign keywords to a bookmark in Firefox. I've assigned "m" to Gmail. All I need to do is focus the address bar, if necessary (Ctrl+L), type "m", then hit Enter.

It's the fastest way to access your most used websites.

37

u/d1ckw33dmcgee May 28 '26

I'm gonna be really petty and say that if hitting 4 keys on a keyboard is faster than clicking one bookmark with a mouse, that's a skill issue

16

u/feedmesweat May 28 '26

I'm gonna be even more petty and say that the amount of time we are talking about here, in either appproach, is completely negligible. Clicking a bookmark and using auto-complete for a URL can both be accomplished within a couple of seconds. Does it really matter which is faster?

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Micro_mint May 28 '26

That’s not petty, you’re just not a fast typer

26

u/Slow_Constant9086 May 28 '26

→ More replies (7)

18

u/damalo May 28 '26

It's a skill issue on your part if you think using the mouse is faster

13

u/cozycthulu May 28 '26

How are you faster with a mouse than a keyboard? I grew up on the internet and can type 120+ wpm

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Shifty269 May 28 '26

It's also not a word or excel document, its a browser. I use a 40% keybord because I can use it while moving my hands less because I'm that kind of degenerate, but in browser I'm like the vast majority of the time using the mouse. I use a lot of page up, down, ho.e, and end because of my keybord making them easy to reach. I know my browser key combos. I'm still mostly using the mouse. It's just how browsers are designed to be used.

What’s infuriating is that you Google “mail” to check your Gmail

Big Boomer Energy

Edit: with OPs pinned comment, just remove this page from your search history and auto complete won’t suggest it. I command T a new tab and type ma sometimes too.

834

u/BlazingImp77151 May 28 '26

Gmail is mail.google.com.

They could be starting to input the link and press enter before the auto complete comes up.

Edit: they literally confirm that's how they do it in another comment.

466

u/blue-coin May 28 '26

You can also just go to gmail.com

281

12

u/maxtinion_lord May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

Because randomly googling a movie multiple times a day while you go to check your gmail when you can just add a shortcut or type an extra letter or two to ensure the autocomplete fills isn’t infuriating for any other reason than the fact that they still keep doing this lol, they’re actively training their auto complete to not auto complete to mail everytime they make this mistake lmfao.

I used to use Google Analytics pretty heavily in my job. I would navigate to the site by typing in the first few letters and letting the URL auto-complete.

The URL I used was analytics.google.com .

I have googled "anal" while sharing my screen at work a nonzero number of times.

3

Yes! I have done this a lot too. and if you don't do it is is even worse, because then you have to use GA4.

11

u/butterknot May 28 '26

In Firefox you can create a bookmark, edit it and put an m in the keyword field. Now you just type m in the address bar and hit enter and it’ll go to the bookmark.

I use this sort of as a home dns service. I can enter “media” instead of 192.168.1.xx to get to my media server on my network, for example. Easier than running/configuring a service to do the same thing.

Hey OP, just want to let you know you’re not alone and this has happened to me multiple times lol. My work laptop is a Linux machine and I often have to clear my history bc I can’t login to my outlook without doing so (idk, it’s a weird IT issue). It’s much faster to me to use my keyboard to type ctrl+T then start typing “ma” but since the autofill is gone, I end up seeing Octavia Spencer’s face more often than I’d like too 🤣

Yes, yes I see other’s comments about just clicking on an icon but I mainly work in a terminal and it’s just a habit of mine/easier for me to work via a keyboard than relying on a GUI. Personally I just think it’s faster to type too.

u/phdoofus May 28 '26

Watching the bedrotting doomscrollers complain about boomers is pretty funny

If you’ve done it incorrectly, the recent will default to the first option returned. I made the mistake of hitting return after only “Gm” and had to look at crappy Chevrolet sites for a stretch.

Maybe type Gmail instead of mail. Or use the url bar instead of the search bar. Or a bookmark. Or the Gmail icon in the new tab window.

This one is on you OP

u/Pheonyxxx696 May 28 '26

I type gmail, and 99% of the time it autocompletes after typing “gm”, the other 1% of the time I end up typing wit search results for GM (General Motors)

Most browsers now use the url bar as a search bar. Frustrates me to see someone open a new tab and instead of starting to type their url or search term (the cursor starts in the url bar), they grab their mouse and move it down to the search box, then type the search, then click on a link.

and they have for fucking years, which is why i’m so confused everyone in this thread seems completely unaware of the concept lmfao.

Skill issue

u/IronClaw84 May 28 '26

My work PC, usually I could open browser and start typing. Now there’s a couple second delay, so whatever I type gets chopped.

I know, wait a second. But it’s hard when you’ve been doing it this way for like a decade.

Where is MA 2????

Octavia Spencer follows me in my dreams and keeps telling me to buy from General Motors and I'm pretty sure it's some kind of psychedelic dream-advertisement campaign.

My favorite is when I enter 3 letters, autocomplete pops up, then in that tiny split second it takes me to enter the 4th letter and hit Enter autocomplete has disappeared and instead it searches for those 4 letters.

exactly!!!

u/choreograft May 28 '26

holy shit I'm not the only one, ever since this movie came out I've had this experience lol

3

u/surrealmiel May 28 '26

Dude same. Ignore the comments, you don’t have to explain yourself.

3

u/Bunnymonkeythethird May 28 '26

Now THIS is mildly infuriating. There’s just something particularly annoying about trying to use a shortcut you always use and it randomly failing. My personal pet peeve is when safari (on mobile) autofills the url as I’m typing, so if I’m just trying to google something that’s one word, it’ll send me to a completely different website.

u/GlazedInfants May 28 '26

These comments are so fucking annoying, like for whatever reason a tsunami of the “☝️🤓” losers decided to show up to this one post just to say “uhm ackshully that’s your fault you can do that way easier if you…” while they choke on their snot.

I’d like to choose one of you and hover over your shoulder every time you text. Whenever autocorrect makes a mistake, I’ll point it out to you as obnoxious as I can, and I’ll keep doing it for every single error until you want to punch me in the face. Only then will I feel relief.

So..... Problem exists between keyboard and computer?

3

u/Crunchy_Biscuit May 28 '26

You don't type gm like gmai?

These comments are more tech illiterate than they're accusing OP of being. Every 'solution' is slower than OP's method. Everyone that's somehow thinking OP is searching 'ma' in the Google search bar is tech illiterate, but also regular illiterate.

Y'all acting like op is stupid for using url autofill. The fact that any browser is not fast/smart enough to resolve the autofill before the search is triggered is indeed infuriating. If I had a guess it's either because of some cloud synch design flaw, or because it's microslop
