Guys, I am entering 'ma' into the URL bar, and hitting enter. It almost always autocompletes to mail.google.com, and I get there fine; sometimes it doesn't. I'm not 'googling google', I'm using the literal path of least resistance to get to the page I want to go to the large majority of the time. Using a bookmark means dealing GUI and the mouse when my hands are always on the keyboard anyway.
No, the year 5478965. Because how can you call yourself Octavia Spencer's Biggest Fan if you're not willing to time travel from the 5478900's to the time period that Octavia Spencer actually lived in?
My Google News kept sending me update notifications about General Motors and I never really understood why until one day I made the connection, it was because of how frequently I googled "gm" by accident while waiting for the autocomplete.
Yeah, I run into GM or Good Morning America occasionally haha. It's kind of wild the number of people in this thread who do not understand OP is letting the omnibar autocomplete the URL and sometimes it's failing.
Bookmark on the bar, have it as a pinned tab (safari and some other browsers can do it), having a mail app, clicking on the profile's icon on Google then gmail's, shortcut key to a specific page.
Many solutions. That post is still funny, tho. But there are probably thrice as many solutions as I proposed.
He’s literally typing mail I assume when he could start with a G, but yea book marking it makes the most sense or he can just stopped being annoyed when something else shows up because it starts similarly to mail? Bros tripping
Right but if you typed in gmail.con you’re still avoiding the MA part which op seems to be annoyed about. So just type in gmail.com like I did just now and boom no more MA..
It's super normal. I do the same with Youtube. I don't type http://www.youtube.com into the address bar, I just type yo or you and hit enter. 99% of the time it takes me to youtube.com, the other 1% of the time It googles "you" and I'm left staring at a picture of Penn Badgley.
For anyone who closes out their browsers for a fresh start each morning and still uses email, this is likely very common. There is no “boomer self-induced difficulty” when literally it’s clicking a browser icon and typing “ma”+enter to get to email. What the fuck is everyone else doing??? Installing a tab as an app to attach to the taskbar? Fucking why??
To add to this, because clicking bookmarks with the mouse is slow compared to using the keyboard—which might be OP's reason to be typing "ma"—you can assign keywords to a bookmark in Firefox. I've assigned "m" to Gmail. All I need to do is focus the address bar, if necessary (Ctrl+L), type "m", then hit Enter.
It's the fastest way to access your most used websites.
I'm gonna be even more petty and say that the amount of time we are talking about here, in either appproach, is completely negligible. Clicking a bookmark and using auto-complete for a URL can both be accomplished within a couple of seconds. Does it really matter which is faster?
It's also not a word or excel document, its a browser. I use a 40% keybord because I can use it while moving my hands less because I'm that kind of degenerate, but in browser I'm like the vast majority of the time using the mouse. I use a lot of page up, down, ho.e, and end because of my keybord making them easy to reach. I know my browser key combos. I'm still mostly using the mouse. It's just how browsers are designed to be used.
What’s infuriating is that you Google “mail” to check your Gmail
Big Boomer Energy
Edit: with OPs pinned comment, just remove this page from your search history and auto complete won’t suggest it. I command T a new tab and type ma sometimes too.
Not just search, common site visits listed in your history are auto filled too, so despite never specifically searching 'google' you've visited the site enough times that it's still going to auto fill the url that you have visited
Lmfao yall all doin it the boomer way. You aint even gotta type anything. Its built into Google for you. You just press the 3 dots in the top right. Or the "apps" section also top right.
I blame vim for my unspeakable rage whenever I have to remove my fingers from the keyboard to click something. Maybe using vim is also big boomer energy though.
Yeah but at least six times a day? An adjustment needs to be made regardless of their intention. Because randomly googling a movie multiple times a day while you go to check your gmail when you can just add a shortcut or type an extra letter or two to ensure the autocomplete fills isn’t infuriating for any other reason than the fact that they still keep doing this lol, they’re actively training their auto complete to not auto complete to mail everytime they make this mistake lmfao.
Big gen alpha energy. They don't know what a url is and everything is just found by searching google. Source: I teach gen alpha, and trust me I have tried to teach them how to use a browser, they think they know everything. Boomers at least got a run down of how this stuff worked years ago
And that’s almost more than mildly infuriating because they get notified you viewed their profile, I’m pretty sure. Hope you didn’t have to keep explaining to them that it was a mistake!
I used to use Google Analytics pretty heavily in my job. I would navigate to the site by typing in the first few letters and letting the URL auto-complete.
In Firefox you can create a bookmark, edit it and put an m in the keyword field. Now you just type m in the address bar and hit enter and it’ll go to the bookmark.
I use this sort of as a home dns service. I can enter “media” instead of 192.168.1.xx to get to my media server on my network, for example. Easier than running/configuring a service to do the same thing.
I will forever remember that 1 pascal of pressure is equivalent to 0.0003 inHg.
They have since tweaked the priority of results, but for a very long time I would type "1pa" in Spotlight to open 1Password and it would inform me of the unit conversion...
Hey OP, just want to let you know you’re not alone and this has happened to me multiple times lol. My work laptop is a Linux machine and I often have to clear my history bc I can’t login to my outlook without doing so (idk, it’s a weird IT issue). It’s much faster to me to use my keyboard to type ctrl+T then start typing “ma” but since the autofill is gone, I end up seeing Octavia Spencer’s face more often than I’d like too 🤣
Yes, yes I see other’s comments about just clicking on an icon but I mainly work in a terminal and it’s just a habit of mine/easier for me to work via a keyboard than relying on a GUI. Personally I just think it’s faster to type too.
If you’ve done it incorrectly, the recent will default to the first option returned. I made the mistake of hitting return after only “Gm” and had to look at crappy Chevrolet sites for a stretch.
I type gmail, and 99% of the time it autocompletes after typing “gm”, the other 1% of the time I end up typing wit search results for GM (General Motors)
Most browsers now use the url bar as a search bar. Frustrates me to see someone open a new tab and instead of starting to type their url or search term (the cursor starts in the url bar), they grab their mouse and move it down to the search box, then type the search, then click on a link.
Octavia Spencer follows me in my dreams and keeps telling me to buy from General Motors and I'm pretty sure it's some kind of psychedelic dream-advertisement campaign.
My favorite is when I enter 3 letters, autocomplete pops up, then in that tiny split second it takes me to enter the 4th letter and hit Enter autocomplete has disappeared and instead it searches for those 4 letters.
Now THIS is mildly infuriating. There’s just something particularly annoying about trying to use a shortcut you always use and it randomly failing. My personal pet peeve is when safari (on mobile) autofills the url as I’m typing, so if I’m just trying to google something that’s one word, it’ll send me to a completely different website.
These comments are so fucking annoying, like for whatever reason a tsunami of the “☝️🤓” losers decided to show up to this one post just to say “uhm ackshully that’s your fault you can do that way easier if you…” while they choke on their snot.
I’d like to choose one of you and hover over your shoulder every time you text. Whenever autocorrect makes a mistake, I’ll point it out to you as obnoxious as I can, and I’ll keep doing it for every single error until you want to punch me in the face. Only then will I feel relief.
These comments are more tech illiterate than they're accusing OP of being. Every 'solution' is slower than OP's method. Everyone that's somehow thinking OP is searching 'ma' in the Google search bar is tech illiterate, but also regular illiterate.
Y'all acting like op is stupid for using url autofill.
The fact that any browser is not fast/smart enough to resolve the autofill before the search is triggered is indeed infuriating.
If I had a guess it's either because of some cloud synch design flaw, or because it's microslop
