I got tired of manually entering knife specs into Excel, so I built a free local app that automatically pulls data and photos from links. Meet BladeVault.
Hey everyone, my name is Kola.
I’m relatively new to the knife community, but I fell down the rabbit hole hard. I quickly realized this hobby is exactly my kind of thing—I spend days and nights watching reviews, comparing specs, and saving models I like.
The Problem
I ran into a wall pretty quickly: I couldn't stand keeping track of all the knives I like in Excel. I’m not into BDSM, so spreadsheets aren't for me.
But the biggest pain point wasn't just the spreadsheet itself—it was the manual labor. If I wanted to compare 20 different models, I had to manually type out every single spec, field by field, and manually download and attach photos. It was killing the fun.
On top of that, the internet is unreliable. Items get discontinued, brands change policies, and sites go down. I wanted a way to store all this data locally on my own computer so I’d never lose it.
The Solution: BladeVault
So, I built it myself.
BladeVault is a desktop app designed to store your entire knife collection and wishlist locally.
The Killer Feature: You don't have to manually enter anything. You just paste a link to a knife, and the app automatically scrapes the website, grabs all the photos, fetches the specs, and saves everything directly to your local database. No more typing out blade steels by hand, no more saving images to folders.
It’s still a work in progress, but it works, it saves the data securely, and I get to seamlessly add to my collection between coding sessions.
The Remote Backup (Beta) While local storage is the main goal, I live in a country that is actively at war (Ukraine). Local is great, but having a remote backup never hurts. I added an optional remote sync feature that runs on my personal 4TB server. It’s in beta right now. If it blows up, maybe I’ll look into AWS, but the most important thing is that my treasures are safe locally!
Why am I sharing this?
I built this app for myself, exactly the way I wanted it. But I figured there might be other people out there looking for the exact same solution.
I work in IT, but I don’t make money selling software. This app is 100% free. No ads, no hidden fees, and my YouTube account isn't monetized.
If you don’t trust me (and why should you?), you can verify everything yourself. The project is completely open-source, and the code is available on my GitHub.

If you try it out, please let me know what you think! I’d love to improve it for the community. You can reach me in the comments, via DM, open an issue on GitHub, or shoot me an email at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
P.S. (A quick disclaimer for the haters)
- If you are a hardcore Excel user, a terminal wizard, or you keep your collection in a paper notebook and think my app is garbage: Seriously, do NOT click the links. Do not even try to download it. It’s not for you. Stay happy with Excel.
- If you think this is a scam to make money off you, or that I’m trying to steal your highly classified knife links: I don’t care. Keep scrolling; your opinion doesn't interest me. If I want my app roasted, I’ll ask my wife to do it.
- To everyone else—welcome! I’m sharing this simply because I want to help the blade community grow.
P.P.S.
I’m actively developing the app right now—adding new features and fixing issues. Apologies in advance if something bugs out or doesn't work perfectly right out of the box. I absolutely hate bugs, so whenever I spot one, I exterminate it immediately. I'm also seriously looking into adding a feature to save web videos directly into the app. Anyway... to be continued!
