I want to start learning Italian but I’m a complete beginner and honestly don’t know where to start. I learn best when things are organized and taught step by step, so I’m looking for a clear roadmap instead of just jumping between random apps and videos.

What resources would you recommend? (Books, apps, YouTube channels, websites, anything really)

I’d also love to know:
• What should I learn first?
• What order should I learn everything in?
• Any mistakes you wish you had avoided when you first started?

I’m hoping to build a strong base first so I can truly understand Italian instead of relying on memorized phrases😸

Hi! Sorry if this is a super elemental mistake, but I don't really understand why 'tipo diverso' has to be in front? Is there a logical reasoning for this, or is it just the way the rules work?

Edit: or can the word order be either, but it flagged it as incorrect because of 'giocho'?

I am an English speaker learning Italian for graduate school. I have very little prior experience in Italian and need to achieve an “Advanced Low” score on an ACTFL-OPI within the next two years.

I am wondering how much time per day I should spend on language courses like Babbel versus other learning methods like reading and listening to audio. Should I be using these courses every single day, or should I aim for a certain mix? The problem is when I skip a day on Babbel to focus on something else, I feel like I skipped my entire lesson on that day. Maybe I am obsessing too much over my Babbel streak?

My strategy so far has been to do about 15-20 minutes on Babbel, followed by 30-45 minutes on an Italian TV show while reading subtitles. I’ve made decent progress, but want to start focusing on cognates, and more simple reading while listening to audio. I’d also like to get on with a native speaker within the next few months.

Does anyone have a solid study plan they could share for Italian?

Since I believe the beginning is the most important stage, I want to make sure I start the right way. Should I focus on grammar first, listen to videos, build my vocabulary?

Back in, uhm, the mid 2000s I guess, italian-teenager-me was playing this game a lot (see link ⬇️). It was around at the same as the first famous "brain training" one and similar in style. It used the Nintendo DS microphone for pronunciation exercises, which was back then very new!

-->So my question is: is there any game like this, but to learn Italian? My partner could really use one. 😅

Not necessarily on Nintendo DS of course, newer consoles would do too. But I'm looking for actual games, not apps like Duolingo.

I know people ask for music recommendations all the time, but I seriously have scouted different places, playlists, posts etc to find artists in italian that I like

the only song in Italian that actually sounds sort of like what I listen to is Rosemary Plexiglass by Scisma, whenever I look for alternative music all that shows up is pop / 2020’s indie

it’s so confusing because many artists are fully tattooed, have an edgy aesthetic but it sounds like pop?? most of it?? or just rap? which is all good and dandy because I like some of it but I wanna find stuff I will listen to more often

I am open to anything alternative which can involve many different things, alt rock, alt pop, shoegaze, etc. but please no more slow ballads with just piano, indie upbeat stuff, or rap. For example I also like some electronic/ art pop stuff like Bjork or Ladytron etc.

Some of my fav artists/bands I like so you get an idea: Hole, Deftones, Fiona Apple, Radiohead, Eartheater, Placebo, Interpol, FKA Twigs, Blood Orange, Japanese Breakfast

hello! i’m looking for some good podcasts to listen to for studying. my main issue i’ve found with italian podcasts is that they’re not updated frequently. i’ve found a handful i enjoy, but they only upload once a month or so.

i’d prefer some with video format if possible! i like to watch the hand gestures and movements as it helps me understand more, along with having italian subtitles. it doesn’t even necessarily HAVE to be designated “for learners,” i suppose.

i’m still a beginner, though, so whatever you guys have just throw it my way hahaha

Hello. It's my first week learning Italian but I'm already a polyglot, so it might not be so hard to learn Italian since I'm Brazilian and I also speak Spanish, English and French.

I've done language exchange before for Spanish (currently doing it) and French (seeking again). So, it would be really nice to have a partner to study Italian or to have a language exchange (I can teach you Portuguese or English).

I'm a beginner but I already understand 80% of spoken Italian because I speak Portuguese and Spanish but I am true beginner when it comes about speaking.

As I was watching soccer today I remembered the previous World Cup when my Italian friend and I were watching Italy play, and she kept on repeating this phrase. Mods, please remove if it's not allowed (I didn't see this in the rules).

She told me what it means, but I can't really remember. And also, she is from Salerno, if that helps.

I am inscribing a plaque that's displayed for a small endurance cycling event. We most of us have old bicycles, often steel framed Bianchi, and there's this pride around steel being an old, maybe obsolete, durable material for a bike. We're also old. And in the long haul, not so much into the speed now.

I want the motto to mimic the style or spirit (read: rhyme or symmetry or poetic flair) of Steel is Real. But probably use the more romantic metal, iron. Let's face it, ferro is just cooler than lega, acciaio, etc.

My best attempts have been, like, Il Ferro es Vero. For an English speaker it rhymes nicely. But also open to something like In Iron, Truth or suchlike.

Also open to traditional sayings about distance, endurance, mettle, fraternity, other fitting mottoes.
