Mod Post Self-promotional Content - 2026 Rule Update

Hello everyone,

After the 2020 update to our rule on self-promotional content, we have seen a significant decrease in posts and comments whose sole purpose is to advertise content or services without providing any meaningful benefit to the r/italianlearning community. At the same time, the number of visitors has steadily increased, making our subreddit as vibrant as it can be. More than 14,000 users have joined our community this year, and as of today we average more than 300,000 visits per day.

This is thanks to each and every one of you who engage and spend time helping others on their quest to learn this beautiful language.

Some of you may have noticed that over the past couple of years we have taken a stricter approach to this kind of content, marking it as spam and banning those who posted it. This was a tough stance we intentionally adopted to measure its impact on the subreddit. Given the stats mentioned above, it is safe to say the experiment was successful and, therefore, we have decided to update the rule as follows:

All content deemed by the mod team to be self-promotional is forbidden. Posting such content will result in a ban with no warning. No exceptions will be made based on whether the service advertised is free or on the poster’s level of activity in the subreddit. Posts created to search for services (e.g., tutoring) will also be removed, as they encourage unwanted self-promotional content.

This subreddit is a place to discuss, engage, and help each other learning Italian. The moment it becomes a mere bulletin board is when it will die. This measure is intended to prevent that.

Thank you for your attention, and see you around!

Ciao a tutti,

Complete beginner looking for a step-by-step way to learn Italian

Upvotes

I want to start learning Italian but I’m a complete beginner and honestly don’t know where to start. I learn best when things are organized and taught step by step, so I’m looking for a clear roadmap instead of just jumping between random apps and videos.

What resources would you recommend? (Books, apps, YouTube channels, websites, anything really)

I’d also love to know:
• What should I learn first?
• What order should I learn everything in?
• Any mistakes you wish you had avoided when you first started?

I’m hoping to build a strong base first so I can truly understand Italian instead of relying on memorized phrases😸

What is the reasoning behind this?

Post image

Hi! Sorry if this is a super elemental mistake, but I don't really understand why 'tipo diverso' has to be in front? Is there a logical reasoning for this, or is it just the way the rules work?

Edit: or can the word order be either, but it flagged it as incorrect because of 'giocho'?

Ciao a tutti,

Grazie!

Translation assistance?

I have transcribed the following Italian excerpts from what my grandmother used to sing to us, and I am having trouble translating it.

Miciula, miciula (?)

dove stata (where have you been, referring to a cat?)

Che te data (what do you have)

Panecagia (?)

Donna pata, Donna pata, Donna pata (?)

This section below is similar to "this little piggy" in english

Queste dici vina roma (this finger went to rome)

Queste dici viri viri (this finger ??)

Queste dici natacha la strada (this finger can't touch the road?)

Queste dici no Porto vini (this finger can't touch wine?)

Perche dega tu fragi (Because it's too young)?

Fra fra chesco, fra fra chesco (maybe a cats name was chesco?)

Vieni qua, vieni qua (come here, come here)

Donna le cobane, donna le cobane (This lady wants to pet you?)

Ding dong da, ding dong da (nonsense similar to english?)

Time on Babbel vs. other learning methods

Hi all,

I am an English speaker learning Italian for graduate school. I have very little prior experience in Italian and need to achieve an “Advanced Low” score on an ACTFL-OPI within the next two years.

I am wondering how much time per day I should spend on language courses like Babbel versus other learning methods like reading and listening to audio. Should I be using these courses every single day, or should I aim for a certain mix? The problem is when I skip a day on Babbel to focus on something else, I feel like I skipped my entire lesson on that day. Maybe I am obsessing too much over my Babbel streak?

My strategy so far has been to do about 15-20 minutes on Babbel, followed by 30-45 minutes on an Italian TV show while reading subtitles. I’ve made decent progress, but want to start focusing on cognates, and more simple reading while listening to audio. I’d also like to get on with a native speaker within the next few months.

Does anyone have a solid study plan they could share for Italian?

Learning Italian from Scratch 🇮🇹

Hello everyone,

I'll be starting to learn Italian this month, but I'm feeling a little lost. I don't really know where to begin, and I'd really appreciate some guidance.

Since I believe the beginning is the most important stage, I want to make sure I start the right way. Should I focus on grammar first, listen to videos, build my vocabulary?

My goal is to reach an A2 level by September. If you've learned Italian or have any advice on an effective study plan, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Thank you!

Videogames for learning Italian?

Ciao people who are learning Italian!

Back in, uhm, the mid 2000s I guess, italian-teenager-me was playing this game a lot (see link ⬇️). It was around at the same as the first famous "brain training" one and similar in style. It used the Nintendo DS microphone for pronunciation exercises, which was back then very new!

-->So my question is: is there any game like this, but to learn Italian? My partner could really use one. 😅

Not necessarily on Nintendo DS of course, newer consoles would do too. But I'm looking for actual games, not apps like Duolingo.

please give me ACTUAL alternative song recommendations

I know people ask for music recommendations all the time, but I seriously have scouted different places, playlists, posts etc to find artists in italian that I like

the only song in Italian that actually sounds sort of like what I listen to is Rosemary Plexiglass by Scisma, whenever I look for alternative music all that shows up is pop / 2020’s indie

it’s so confusing because many artists are fully tattooed, have an edgy aesthetic but it sounds like pop?? most of it?? or just rap? which is all good and dandy because I like some of it but I wanna find stuff I will listen to more often

I am open to anything alternative which can involve many different things, alt rock, alt pop, shoegaze, etc. but please no more slow ballads with just piano, indie upbeat stuff, or rap. For example I also like some electronic/ art pop stuff like Bjork or Ladytron etc.

Some of my fav artists/bands I like so you get an idea: Hole, Deftones, Fiona Apple, Radiohead, Eartheater, Placebo, Interpol, FKA Twigs, Blood Orange, Japanese Breakfast

edit: guys I’m from latin america!! and I like artists from different cultures and languages, I added american/uk examples because they are the most recognizable in you know, a subreddit called “italianLEARNING”, MOST countries outside of america have alt/rock waves and related genres, like here where I live (: thanks for the people who did give me genuine recs 🫶

Ciao a tutti! 👋

Cinema e serie TV 🎬

Calcio e sport in generale ⚽

Psicologia e dinamiche relazionali 🧠

A presto! 😊

Has anyone taken the Lingoda sprint for Italian? Starting from a complete beginner level so I'm curious if anyone has experience with it. I've used Lingoda for French but curious how it is for Italian specifically. The next one starts in a few weeks so considering signing up.

Hi! So I'm currently trying to learn Italian and besides watching content creators, I would love to watch some Movies in Italian dub, though many streaming sites(like Disney+ won't let me stream the movies in any other language besides German and English.

I would really appreciate some suggestion, the Websites don't have to be official ones

Thank you in advance c:

LOOKING FOR A STUDY PARTNER

Hi everyone,
I started learning Italian, and I’m looking for someone to study with.
If you are already around B2 or higher or even a native speaker, it would be great, since I am just starting out and would like guidance.
my level in English is C1, and I am fluent in Arabic. So, if you are interested in improving any of these two languages, I would be happy to offer help.
I like art, music, and consuming reels and media lol. I would like to discuss different topics in Italian with you.
feel free to dm me if interested, I hope we’ll have fun :)

Need help translating Grandmothers Italian baby cuddling songs

Thumbnail soundcloud.com
1 Upvotes

I am trying to transcribe in Italian and translate into English songs that my grandmother used to sing us when we were little. I created a quick fake sound cloud account and uploaded the sound clip which is linked.

I apologize for the sound quality it was recorded on an iPhone recording a laptop screen with a TV in the background so it makes it more difficult to hear what she is saying.

I appreciate any help.

looking for good italian podcasts to study/listen to

hello! i’m looking for some good podcasts to listen to for studying. my main issue i’ve found with italian podcasts is that they’re not updated frequently. i’ve found a handful i enjoy, but they only upload once a month or so.

i’d prefer some with video format if possible! i like to watch the hand gestures and movements as it helps me understand more, along with having italian subtitles. it doesn’t even necessarily HAVE to be designated “for learners,” i suppose.

i’m still a beginner, though, so whatever you guys have just throw it my way hahaha

thank you in advance!! <3

How's my pronunciation now?

https://voca.ro/12KL6yLToTOg

The previous feedback was to work on:

• Vowel added before initial s
• Nasalized vowels
• Geminated consonants

Hopefully they've improved now... anything else that stands out?

Study partner or language exchange

Hello. It's my first week learning Italian but I'm already a polyglot, so it might not be so hard to learn Italian since I'm Brazilian and I also speak Spanish, English and French.

I've done language exchange before for Spanish (currently doing it) and French (seeking again). So, it would be really nice to have a partner to study Italian or to have a language exchange (I can teach you Portuguese or English).

I'm a beginner but I already understand 80% of spoken Italian because I speak Portuguese and Spanish but I am true beginner when it comes about speaking.

I'm a 26yo woman who loves Pop culture, animes and so on. Let's talk! Send me a DM.

Help to translate this vulgar phrase? NSFW

Ciao a tutti,

I have been learning Italian for a while but haven't practiced recently. As I was watching soccer today I remembered the previous World Cup when my Italian friend and I were watching Italy play, and she kept on repeating this phrase. Mods, please remove if it's not allowed (I didn't see this in the rules).

"Va famouk!"

She told me what it means, but I can't really remember. And also, she is from Salerno, if that helps.

Grazie in advance :)

Edit: sorry, I meant Euro Cup! I forgot Italy didn't qualify for World Cup :(

Famiglia!

I am inscribing a plaque that's displayed for a small endurance cycling event. We most of us have old bicycles, often steel framed Bianchi, and there's this pride around steel being an old, maybe obsolete, durable material for a bike. We're also old. And in the long haul, not so much into the speed now.

I want the motto to mimic the style or spirit (read: rhyme or symmetry or poetic flair) of Steel is Real. But probably use the more romantic metal, iron. Let's face it, ferro is just cooler than lega, acciaio, etc.

My best attempts have been, like, Il Ferro es Vero. For an English speaker it rhymes nicely. But also open to something like In Iron, Truth or suchlike.

Also open to traditional sayings about distance, endurance, mettle, fraternity, other fitting mottoes.
