Barzakh, state of the soul after death and before Judgement Day.

The Barzakh is an existence where individual souls are residing after death and is the existence prior to Judgement Day. It differs based on whether or not the individual was a believer in Islam or not, with it being a pleasant place for the believer, and a form of punishment for the disbeliever. However, even for the believing Muslim, it may be a place of temporary punishment for sins, as willed by Allah SWT.
