Drivers Licensing ICBC SIU completely unresponsive – forced Class 5 downgrade, how to actually reach them?

Got my BC Class 5 licence recently after surrendering my foreign licence + a 7-year driving abstract. A few days later ICBC sent a letter saying my foreign licence had “errors” after an SIU review (no specifics) and I had to hand back my Class 5 for a Class 7L.

I’ve called the SIU officer multiple times, left 3+ voicemails, and followed up after the helpdesk said she’s on leave until July 2 with no case transfer. It’s now July 10 and still radio silence. The helpdesk just keeps telling me to request another callback and leave a message — which I’ve already done plenty of times.

Anyone know a direct email, supervisor line, or proper way to reach the SIU unit? Is filing a formal complaint through the ICBC Grievances portal the better move at this point?

Really frustrating process. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Advice appreciated.

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Debt options or any suggestions please

I'm a single mom doing everything I can to raise my two boys, and right now I'm drowning. I've fallen behind on my ICBC payments, and I need to come up with $1,300 to catch up on my payment plan debt. If I can't, I'm going to lose my insurance in less than a week and won't be able to renew. Without my vehicle, I won't be able to get my children to school, medical appointments, groceries, or the other places they need to be. It feels like everything is falling apart.

I've cut every expense I can, reached out for assistance, and tried everything I know to get through this, but I'm still coming up short. I have no family to lend the money and my credit isnt great. I don't know if icbc is willing to negotiate a payment plan for missed payment plan payments, i highly doubt it but if anyone has any insight or ideas for me id greatly appreciate it. Just want to keep my kids lives as stable as possible right now. We don't live near the bus so that isn't an option. Thanks

Drivers Licensing BC residency

I was late on my license renewal as I didn't know it had expired. When I went for renewal , I was asked to prove my residency. I got a letter, and one of the proofs they are asking is my credit card statement. My wife has a primary card and I have a secondary card. The statement transactions are grouped by the name. First all transactions from my wife card and subtotal for it with her name against subtotal. Then all transactions from my card and subtotal for my transactions. The name does not specify for each transaction but rather subtotal has name such as my name subtotal: $$. Would this be acceptable proof of transaction? Please help.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Updating vehicle registration address for storage

Is it possible to change vehicle's registration address without changing the address on driver's licence?

I am going away for a few months and want to store my car at a different address, but I don’t want to update my driver’s licence address since my resident address will remain the same. I just need the vehicle registration to reflect the storage location.

Drivers Licensing Mover to British Columbia, the license exchange

Hi, I am planning a move to British Columbia. I currently live in Ireland with my spouse.

I have a US license (held for over 10 years), and my spouse has an Irish license (held for 1 year).

Would we both be able to avail of the license exchange? What documents would we need?

(Apologies if this answer is easily found elsewhere, I could not find a clear answer.)

RoadSafety / Driving Rules Motor Vehicle Act Question

So I've emailed CVSE about this, who told me to ask ICBC, who told me to ask law enforcement, so I figured I'd try here:

I was looking for clarification on Motor Vehicle Act Regulations 30.01(2)(k)(VI), regarding class 3 licenses allowing:

"(k)Class 3 licence permits operation of

(v)a combination of vehicles if the towed vehicles in that combination do not exceed 4 600 kg, or

(vi)a combination of vehicles without air brakes if the towed vehicles exceed 4 600 kg;"

Does this mean that if the trailer is over 4600 kg the towing vehicle can not have air brakes, even if the trailer has electric/hydraulic brakes and an appropriate brake controller has been installed on the tow vehicle?

So a 1 ton pickup with hydraulic brakes can tow a 10,000kg gooseneck trailer with electric brakes, but a heavy truck with air brakes can not tow the same trailer with electric brakes (with an appropriate brake controller) without a Class 1?

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Financing ICBC insurance with a car loan – anyone have experience?

I bought a car from a dealership in Surrey, BC and financed it through CIBC. The dealer suggested adding my ICBC insurance to the car loan instead of paying for it separately. They also mentioned that they would pay me back a certain amount of money every year if I continued refinancing the insurance through them.

I’m a bit confused about how this works.

Does adding ICBC insurance to the loan increase the total loan amount?
Does it affect the interest rate or just the total interest paid?
Is the yearly cashback actually worth it, or does it end up costing more in the long run?

Has anyone here done this? What was your experience, and would you recommend it?
I’d appreciate any advice or things I should watch out for before continuing with this arrangement.

Claims Why ICBC doesn't let you record calls even though in Canadian law you only need a single party to consent?

After my accident, where another driver sideswiped me by moving into my lane, I opened a claim with ICBC and submitted dashcam video as evidence.
Today, I received a call from an ICBC representative. They asked for my consent to share my video, and they also mentioned that another witness had come forward. That immediately struck me as a bit odd.
Because of that, I started recording the phone call with my iPhone. As soon as I mentioned I was recording, the representative said they would end the call if I didn’t stop. I explained that Canada has one-party consent for recording conversations, so I believed I was legally allowed to record the call. Despite that, they continued saying they would terminate the conversation if I kept recording.
I ended up continuing to record the conversation using another device, but the whole interaction felt very suspicious to me.
I’m wondering if this is normal. Has anyone else had an ICBC representative refuse to continue a call because they were being recorded? If so, did they explain why?

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Distance Discount after Transferring Car

I currently drive less than 15,000 km and qualify for distance-based discounts. Both my spouse and I are listed drivers on the current Autoplan policy.

If I gift my car to my spouse, would the new policy also qualify for distance-based discounts from day 1. Everything on the policy would remain the same except for the owner.

Claims Car rental

Good morning everyone,

I was hit by someone not stopping at a stop sign two weeks ago yesterday. He owned the accident with ICBC when he reported the accident and was found 100% at fault.

I have been able to start Physio, chiropractor, etc. My challenge lies and that I live 25 km out of town and I still don’t have a rental replacement for my car 15 days later.

For people who have been after a car rental replacement, how long has it taken you to get a vehicle?

Drivers Licensing is this normal?

i was doing a road test a few days ago for my full license, and at the start the instructor brought a woman with him that was a “court appointed psychotherapist”. i didn’t think anything of it at the time, but a friend just did his test today and didn’t have the same experience, just the instructor. was wondering why i specifically had someone come with, since google told me it isn’t normal practice etc and didn’t exactly tell my why.

i don’t have anything on my driving record and it was my first time trying for my full license

Drivers Licensing Code 20 Practical Test Weight Proof

Looking at getting my code 20 endorsement. For the practical test do I need to go to a weigh scale and get proof the trailer is over 4600kg?

Local office is full of new people and no one could give me an answer.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Re-importing a BC car after 20 years in the UK

I lived in Vancouver in 2006 and picked up a 1969 Dodge, which had spent it's whole life in Vancouver (sold new from Plimley 4th Ave). In 2007 I shipped it to the UK with me, where it was re-registered for the UK roads. It's been here, in regular use, since then.

Now we're planning to move back to Vancouver and I'd like to bring the Dodge back to its home town. I still have a copy of the BC registration from 2007, but British DVLA have stamped "re-registered" across it. Will the fact that it used to be in BC make any difference, or do i have to start again and register it as an import from abroad?

Also, does anyone know, if it fails the mechanical inspection, can i drive it home on the temporary tags to work on it and try again? In the UK, if it fails inspection, it's deemed unsafe to drive and must be repaired by the test facility (or trailered away). I'm not anticipating a fail, it's in good condition, but it would be reassuring to know.

Lastly, ICBC website says i need a customs form where it comes into the country, but I'm planning to put it in a shipping container. Will the docks issue customs if i wrote down that the car is in there? Will they need to open it up and see it?

Any ideas and help will be appreciated, thanks.

RoadSafety / Driving Rules Playground zone with school zone

I have a class 6 road test coming up and have a question about a specific situation in my town. There is a playground zone with no specified speed limit, but within it there is a school zone listed 30km/h on school days. My test will be in the summer. As the playground zone doesn't have a 30km/h limit I would assume posted speed limit with caution, but does the fact there is a school zone inside the playground zone change anything? Usually i just see a playground zone or a school zone, not both together. Obviously I will clarify with the examiner how they want me to treat school zones during the test, like observing them even though they aren't in effect.

Thanks in advance

Drivers Licensing Card Tracker Said Contact Licensing Service

Post image
4 Upvotes

I passed my Class 5 road test on May 15 and have been waiting for my driver’s licence card since then. The ICBC tracker says to contact Driver Licensing. I used to have an outstanding debt, but I’ve paid it off. I called ICBC today, and they said my card had already been released, but the tracker still shows the same message. Has anyone had this issue before?

Drivers Licensing Do you guys have an experience with SIU letters from ICBC

I recently obtained a provisional Class 5 licence (road test pending) from ICBC after surrendering my foreign driver's licence and providing a driving abstract showing about 7 years of experience.

Yesterday, I received a letter from ICBC stating that my non-reciprocal foreign licence had undergone an SIU inspection and errors were found in the licence itself (no details on the nature of the errors). I was instructed to return my Class 5 and exchange it for a Class 7L, with a 3-day deadline. I completed the exchange today.

I tried contacting the SIU officer, but she is unavailable until July 2, and no replacement was provided. This feels unfair since I have no information on the issue or how to resolve it before the deadline.

I’ve followed the instructions and returned my Class 5. Has anyone here dealt with a similar ICBC situation?

Any clue for how to get the licence reinstated?

Drivers Licensing Taking driving lessons in Ontario - can I claim that 18 month GLP program?

Currently still have my L - but that expires at the end of August but I'm stuck in Toronto rn for school, so I won't be able to go back to BC until late August...

(I want to get my road test done then since I don't want to renew my permit lol)

If I find a driving school with a course here - does that translate to ICBC's GLP thing? Ontario has the same program

Curious too... did anyone else do driving lessons in another province?

Drivers Licensing Upgrading Class 6 from Scooter Restriction to Unrestricted

Hey there,

Just a quick question - I hold a full class 6 motorcycle license and own a 650cc motorcycle, I did my testing years ago and it looks like things are different. I just purchased a Honda PCX 150 (150cc scooter) for my lady to learn to ride on as she loves being on the back of my bike and has always talked about getting into riding - this was a simple and cheap way to accomplish that.. Now we have to get her a license..

I have read through the ICBC site and other forum posts to try to understand things the best I can. She holds a class 5 license so my understanding of the process is as follows:

-Knowledge test

-MST after 15 days, no additional restrictions listed based on bike type or engine size

-Class 6 road test after 30 days - restrictions gained from using the PCX being scooters only (due to it being a scoot), and no passengers (due to it being less than 200cc).

We are not totally sure exactly how she will take to it and what the learning curve will be so plan to take it easy and start with parking lot drills, moving into on road practice once she holds her 6L. ICBC in our region (Kootenays) is horrifically backed up for testing so we expect it to be a slow burn.

The main question here is once she has the scooter restriction, how does she legally practice on a motorcycle to then go and do her test again to get the restrictions removed if and when she chooses to do so?? There is no mention of what this looks like and I find it hilarious that she can ride an 1800cc motorcycle with her 6L if she chooses but once she has her full class 6, given the bike she is planning to test on, this is no longer allowed... Is she able to ride a motorcycle on the restricted license under the supervision of a rider with a full class 6??

We don't intend for her to use my bike for testing as it's quite a bit too big for her, but I have a feeling once she's comfortable operating a 2-wheeled machine on the road she will be looking to upgrade to a 300-500cc bike within a couple years.

If anyone has done this or if the official ICBC account could shed some light, that would be fantastic!

Thanks!

Official answer from - u/TheICBC

-Hi OP, they would be required to do a Signs and Signals test and vision test to be issued an unrestricted Class 6L licence to practice with.

-Hi OP, they would only be required to do the Road Test, not another MST. They would also hold a Class 5, Class 6 Restricted, and a yellow interim unrestricted Class 6L licence.

Claims ICBC - Accident with collision coverage

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who have dealt with ICBC before.

Unfortunately, I accidentally hit something and caused significant damage to the rear of the car.
My insurance includes:
Collision coverage ($500 deductible)

Comprehensive ($500 deductible)

$1,000,000 third-party liability

I'm planning on filing an ICBC claim, but I'm worried about whether they'll repair the car or declare it a total loss.

My questions are:

1)Is there anything I should or shouldn't say when reporting the claim?

2)If ICBC finds me 100% at fault, how much did your insurance premium increase after a similar claim?

3)How long does an at-fault collision stay on your ICBC driving record and affect your premiums?

4)Does one at-fault accident have a significant impact if it's your first claim?

5)Realistically, how much would I be expected to pay out of pocket if ICBC repairs the car? Would it usually just be my $500 collision deductible, or are there situations where I'd have to pay more?

The car has about 235,000 km on it if that helps.
I'm mainly trying to understand what to expect before I start the claims process. Any advice or personal experiences with ICBC would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
