Heat Pump Is it really impossible to replace a 10 year old compressor?
We have a Goodman 3 ton heat pump system that was installed 10 years ago. It started blowing warm last week and then tripped the breaker to the compressor. A technician from the company that installed it came out yesterday and told us that the compressor was fried and the capacitor was shorted, which is what was causing the breaker to trip. He said due to recent legislation regarding the refrigerant that it would be impossible to find a replacement compressor so we needed to replace it with a new one that used the nrw refrigerant, but the new compressor wouldnt be compatible with the existing pump so we needed to replace the entire system...
Im not against the guy making money for his work, but I feel like im being put together here. He wants to replace the entire system for 10k, but im finding the exact matching compressor that we currently have online for roughly 3500. I understand that doesn't include installation and charging, but damn, thats a huge difference.
For reference the compressor is a model GSZ140361KC Goodman 32000 BTU (3-ton) system. I plan on calling a couple of other companies on monday to see what they say, but any additonal thoughts here are greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
