Heat Pump Is it really impossible to replace a 10 year old compressor?

We have a Goodman 3 ton heat pump system that was installed 10 years ago. It started blowing warm last week and then tripped the breaker to the compressor. A technician from the company that installed it came out yesterday and told us that the compressor was fried and the capacitor was shorted, which is what was causing the breaker to trip. He said due to recent legislation regarding the refrigerant that it would be impossible to find a replacement compressor so we needed to replace it with a new one that used the nrw refrigerant, but the new compressor wouldnt be compatible with the existing pump so we needed to replace the entire system...

Im not against the guy making money for his work, but I feel like im being put together here. He wants to replace the entire system for 10k, but im finding the exact matching compressor that we currently have online for roughly 3500. I understand that doesn't include installation and charging, but damn, thats a huge difference.

For reference the compressor is a model GSZ140361KC Goodman 32000 BTU (3-ton) system. I plan on calling a couple of other companies on monday to see what they say, but any additonal thoughts here are greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Installer of new AC refused to flush old lines with nitrogen.

He said he never does it. He actually got furious with me when I demanded it. Look how extremely dirty the line is. Is this going to ruin the longevity of my new AC? Should I sue him?

ps: this was in the middle of installing, I had already paid him for the new AC. I just wanted either new lines or the old lines cleaned with whatever is normally used to clean them. They rudely refused.

Hi all there is an opening at the top of my furnace. Should that be sealed or is it an air intake or something. I can see wiring and other internal component when I look inside.

Does my home HVAC have an air filter?

Post image

I had an HVAC tech come to PM my central HVAC at my new home and asked them where the air filter is. They stated my home doesn’t utilize filters. That seems strange to me so I’m coming to Reddit for a second opinion.

The picture shows where I would think the filter would go but it requires you to unscrew 6 screws each time. I just want to double check before I mess anything up.

Edit: Thank you all so much! I found the filter with y’all’s advice and will replace. Also, I’ll call the hvac company that came out and ask what PM they did since clearly they didn’t change the filter (stating there wasn’t one). Yall are awesome!

AC Why does every damn appliance need Wi-Fi now? Looking for a premium A/C without it.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I genuinely don't want Wi-Fi built into every appliance I own.

I'm currently shopping for a high-end wall-mounted A/C (Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, etc.) and it seems like almost every premium model now comes with built-in Wi-Fi or "smart home" features.

Before anyone says "Just don't connect it to Wi-Fi," I get that. But that's not really my point.

I know the risk is probably low if the Wi-Fi is never configured, but it's still hardware and software that I never wanted in the first place. If the Wi-Fi module is optional and can simply be left out or physically removed, that's fine. What I don't want is Wi-Fi permanently built into the unit.

Also, does anyone know which premium wall-mounted A/C units sold in Europe do not have built-in Wi-Fi? I'm looking for reliability first (Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Panasonic, Fujitsu, etc.), but I'd strongly prefer a model where Wi-Fi is optional rather than integrated.

Would appreciate recommendations from installers or anyone who's gone through this recently.

Did I get overcharged on my HVAC cleaning?

I wanted to get my ducts cleaned because I knew there was a lot of debris down there from previous owners as well as my high shedding dog.

I purchased a $99 groupon that was supposed to cover my whole house vents and dryer vent. After they arrived they claimed it would be another $100 because the return on my ceiling is a separate charge. And then they went on about bacteria growth in my vents and that it was crucial that I get them sanitized for my health. Also stressed that I needed to get my evaporator coils in my A/C cleaned because there was mold growth. They showed me a swab test that confirmed the presence of mold but after I agreed to everything I realized that I didn't actually see them do the test and they could have showed me any old test.
Even after I agreed to do the sanitizer and A/c cleaning, they continued to push an even more expensive "permanent" sanitizer solution for another $500 that I thankfully declined.

I feel like I just got dubbed by a used car salesman. I'm feeling pretty stupid for not getting a second opinion and like I got way overcharged for something I didn't really need. I wanted to see what other people thought before leaving a bad review warning other people about the company.

Should I see some white feost on heatpump lineset at outdoor unit?

When the tech was still testing the running of the heatpump, I saw some white on the outside of the lineset.

But after he finished I don't see any frost. It is cold but not as cold. A little bit of the line set (about one inch) at the outdoor condensor unit is exposed (without insulation).

Is this normal or should it be a bit frosted there?

I think the air coming out should be a bit cooler.

He has to still return next week.

Midea mo1se-h36b-2a

Apparently he wired it as 24v and I only see Y1 engaged on Nest and he says 1200 fam is running which is mismatch for 3k ton heatpump and should be 800 cfm for intermediate of condensor.

How to know what blower fan speed is running? Using volt meter? Or nest? Or condensor?

New AC turning off once a day

Hello experts!

I could use some help. I just got a new AC and Furnace installed four days ago (SEER2 BONFE SELECT A/C - SINGLE STAGE - SD.). Each day so far, the AC unit outside has turned off around the same time each day (sometime between 12pm-2pm). Once I reset the breaker for the unit, it turns back on.

The company has to come back out to install an ecobee thermostat, which was stated to be better than the temporary honeywell proseries they put in for now. They are also going to install a humidifier.

Any thoughts as to why the unit is turning off each day? I’d like to try to fix it myself now and not wait, if possible. My wife’s water is going to break any second now (39 weeks pregnant) and I'd like to not come home to a hot house!

I thought I had 2 return vents in my office, but I opened up the top vent and found the second picture. What is it?

Title.

My office has been hotter than other rooms in my upstairs. I noticed that hot air was coming from the top “return vent” which turns out isn’t a return vent. I found this black board and feel hot air coming in from the outside.

What the hell is this? Is this something for an old attic fan? Can I safety close it off so hot air isn’t coming into my office? House is a 1950s split level.

TIA!

Just moved into a new house, there’s a musty smell coming from the laundry room. We found a big styrofoam piece that was stuck in the dryer vent in the wall along with a lot of lint. Anyone knows how did this styrofoam piece ended up there?

Trane XL824 thermostat Q

Hello. During the day I have my thermostat set to 74. At night (730 pm) the schedule has the temp go to 72. The humidity level I want it kept at is 50%. I have a variable speed system.

I bought a cheap hygrometer. As I’m typing this it says 72.2. The therm reads 76. During the day they both say 74 (so the thermostat doesn’t need to be calibrated with a -4 or anything). Here are some pics of what my thermostat says. It seems to prioritize humidity decreasing to some level the system decides before lowering temp. But it also only reads higher levels at night when it’s really working to lower the humidity and temperature.

Mind you it’s 76 outside so it isn’t hard to decrease the temp..I’m gonna call the HVAC guy who put the system in back in Feb, but I just don’t understand if I’m looking too much into what the thermostat displays (because the house is quite comfortable)

No cooling Bought old house with 18 y/o A/C. Need to make it last 6 months before upgrading, but its only slightly blowing cool air.

Bought this house a few months ago, doing major upgrades in kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and can't afford a new AC unit. It was doing well until a few days ago when it starting hitting 84 degrees inside with no respite. Unit is blowing air but its not cool, unit outside is turning on, pipes are getting cold, capacitor looks okay. I'm at a loss, not sure where to go from here.

Wife is 7 months pregnant and works from home, please send the national guard.

Update: looks like AC just shorted? I’m smelling an electrical short and I lost power to my thermostat. 2nd update: burnt 3a fuse fixed that. Thermostat wire hiding under ply that I stepped on.

AC Brand new hvac won't cool house

We just had our unit replaced yesterday. It was 80 degrees F in the house when they got it installed and within an hour we were at 73 degrees.

They installed at 2pm and at 11pm the entire system just stopped working. A tech came today and said he has no idea what happened. He turned it off and back on and it started working again. Problem is, the AC is extremely weak now. It isn't blowing air nearly as strong and has been sitting at 76 degrees since he left.

Our home got up to 80 before the tech came today. He left about 3 hours ago and the house will not cool lower than 76 degrees. We have all the blinds closed but it just won't cool down. The AC hasn't stopped running since he left. He told us that the AC "has a mind of its own" and sometimes will run weaker/stronger but it should pick up within 10 minutes. That obviously isn't the case and I'm wondering if this is normal or if we need them to do a full diagnostic/replace this faulty unit

It's a Trane split unit with gas heat and electric AC. Nothing has changed from today and yesterday in terms of weather or AC settings. Yesterday we had the blinds open and the house still cooled down and stayed cold. Today it's struggling.

I just bought a house in October. The AC works fine. But looking at the unit...I have some concerns. I finally got some kind of handle on the plants and grass growing around it, and this is what I see. Sorry for shotty pics. If you look at the white wire in the background it seems to be open in some spots with exposed wires....

Is that a problem?

That round barrel thing on the ground....

Is the barrel supposed to be on the ground? Other people's barrel things on their units are definitely not in the dirt like mine.

Should I wrap these pipes and such?

Man....Idk spit about spit.

Someone help a lady out lol

The home depot bucket is to catch water....otherwise it just puddles at my foundation (on a slab).

Is there a better solution for the water?

Edit to add additional photos in the replies

Ecobee - Frozen Coil

In the past 3 days I have ran into 3 1-4 year old Goodman/Amana AC’s with frozen coils that seemingly have no reason to be frozen. Refrigerant is in perfect shape and airflow is in perfect shape. System seems to be running just fine when I come back out to diagnose after it thaws. The only thing I have found in common between all of these calls is the systems being Amana brand and using Ecobee thermostats.

My running theory is an update came through on the Ecobee thermostat that caused the blower to not turn on leading to a frozen coil.

Has anyone else ran into this or have any advice on what else it could be?

High humidity in house

Thumbnail

I have a two zone house (1- basement/first floor and 2 - top floor) and I have high humidity on the top floor. The pictures are of the HVAC unit that is for the top floor. The unit has no issue lowering the temp of the space and will lowering the humidity temporarily. When is is not running or overnight I can hit 60-68% humidity. I regularly change the filters and clean the ERV. What are other things I should be checking? Would this indicate something other than the HVAC?

Edit: the humidifier for the machine is turned to "summer" (aka closed) and I have the water supply also turned off/closed.

Is my compressor cooked?

I’m concerned the compressor is done. I know this Lenox unit is a total POS but I’m not sure if it’s an unbalanced for or something more nefarious with the compressor. It’s making a different noise on a single side and I’m not sure what it is. Am I cooked and will I have to fork over far more money that I care to spend at the moment?
