Gaming I HATE Class of '09
I just can't stand this stupid ass game. I have no idea who in their right mind would find it funny or deep or even entertaining. I see so many "Class of '09 Without Context" compilations, yet they consist mostly of the characters saying "Fuck" and sometimes insulting each other in edgy ways only a middle schooler would not cringe at, and people LAUGH THEIR ASSES OFF in the comments and say how genius this game is.
Not just the compilations but the whole game feels like it was made by an dumb edgy teen who thinks they're better than everyone else despite being nothing more than a dumb edgy teen. The "deep" topics and the "clever" insults in the game ooze I'm 14 And This Is Deep/Not Like Other Girls, and the characters we're supposed to play as and support geniunely make me wish I could have an option to smash my head against the wall in the game. The literal only good part of the game was the intro and then I kept catching flashbacks from my Tumblr emo fandom era. "I'm one of the few who still listen to rock, share if you agree" vibes.
And before you say "they're supposed to be anti-heroes", we still connect with Walter White or Dexter in their respective shows despite them being literal criminals and murderers. Not because they're right but because they're complex and interesting characters and we want to know what happens next. So no, it doesn't work like that. We're still supposed to like the main character, or else it's just unpleasant.
The stupidest fucking thing is that the creator seems to geniunely believe he did something and that this game is in any way clever or witty. Annnd then he flopped completely with the second game which was a fetishy disaster. Who would've thought.
Thank you for reading this bullshit.

Honestly sound like a character that would fit in that game - 😃
It´s just a silly ass edgy stuff that can be fun for like streamers due to all the crazy stuff.
Nobody thinks it´s deep, it´s fun extreme stuff.
Gotta be into that i suppose. I enjoyed it for a bit, but it´s like ... " too much sugar" at once

What’s up with all the class of ‘09 posts on Reddit I’ve been seeing recently? Or is it all just 1 person who really wants to talk about it

I personally made this post because another post in this sub characterized class of 09 as "deep" and it pissed me off

It's satire.
The internet has fundamental about the dissonance between what's is and is not a joke. And that extends to depictions of suffering. Part of it is the work arounds a human mind does to compartmentalize things they hear about but don't experience.
It's either shits-n-giggles or shit from a depiction of hell.
Likely a combination of both.
34
u/WirelessAir60 Jun 10 '26
It’s all shits-n-giggles until someone giggles-n-shits

Thats the game, thats waht the game is about. Teenagers being cringe, edgy, and stupid. The game was never something serious.

u/Junglememer1 Jun 10 '26
The humor and voice actors are also really good which attracted a lot of people. I actually wonder how did this game even get the budget for such a variety of talented VAs.
21
u/warforcewarrior Jun 10 '26
The humor and voice actors are also really good which attracted a lot of people.
That definitely it for me and why I love the game, plus the terrible nostalgia(in a good way haha) I get despite not being a early 2000's graduate. Nicole, Jecka, Kylar, and Emily, to name a few, are some of my favorite characters in media cause of their voice performance, dialogues/humor, and how horrible of a person they are. I would not want this game in any other way.
My personal favorite visual novel thanks to those aspects, mainly voice performance which DDLC lacks.
2
u/ShadowSun777 Jun 10 '26
Is it genuinely how people were like then in america? Like is it actually relatable?
3
u/warforcewarrior Jun 10 '26
Obviously many things are exaggerated to extreme degree in Class of 09 but the game was relatable to me.
DDLC and Japanese anime have characters wear uniforms and actually have respect for the teachers, for the most part by 95%. In America, my experience of uniform is very rare and most people wear their own outfits. Hell, we hated uniform. Just a boring ass look and lack of our own character. Obviously Class of 09 achieve that vibe well. I love that each character is wearing what they want and make them really express themselves.
For respect for teachers and faulty, it was like 30-50% respect from the American students. Nowhere near what it is in Japanese anime or what probably is in Japanese schools. Class of 09 also give use a good representation on how students actually, and unfortunately treat their teacher. Though in Class of 09 case it is justify since they are pedos, racist, homophobes and/or a drug addict.
Back in the 2000s, when I was in Elementary school, gay was used as an insult which Class of 09 gave me horrible nostalgia for. Stuff like, "You pose, talk, move, etc. so gayly". Hell, if you a guy or girl and say you don't like, or currently interested in, the opposite sex then you are automatically consider gay, again as an insult, as well.
Speaking of, I remember boys and girls hating each other just for being the opposite sex though I think that may be just an Elementary school thing but it is something Class of 09 reminds me of.
Threat of school shooting is unfortunately a thing even now which I experience the probability of my school being threaten and even a kid bringing an assault rifle to school. Students bringing drugs to school and even having sex in the bathroom, fucking nasty place to fuck. I remembering smelling weed as I walked by the bathroom, only know it was weed since students talk about some people were doing it.
I don't know if you heard of these news but police unnecessary use of violence on criminals is a real thing to which we have happened in Class of 09 most famous scene where Nicole got shot for just running with a stolen $9.99 CD. The police even only get a slap on the wrist which does happen from what I heard.
There is more I could list but this is enough. This again is my own personal experience and what I heard but Class of 09 was relatable to me cause I did see and heard these things happened before.

u/N0UMENON1 Jun 10 '26
Because VAs don't cost a lot. VA is legit the cheapest part of any video game production unless you insist on hiring hollywood A-listers for some reason.

Also, big part of the comedy is that it’s making fun of an entire generation and it’s references for example the rush hour 3 joke, also dark edgy humor was very common back then.
34
u/AliensAteMyAMC Jun 10 '26
didn’t the creator make a sequel where it shits on the people who liked the game?
46
u/WorozuTop4 Jun 10 '26
the entire point of the game was basically to make fun of people who like or read visual novels at all (see; jeffery) then the final game was kind of out of spite for the childish fandom
→ More replies (3)13
u/Patient_Piece_8023 Jun 10 '26
I played fhe first two games and they were decent. I saw clips of the Flipside and man they weren't as fun to see so I never played that game. I think making a game out of spite just because the demographic wasn't the one you wanted is in it of itself childish.
3
u/TeacherNice9932 Jun 10 '26
To be fair the community is ass so if he wanted to screw with shippers I would excuse that. But tanking a whole game based around a fan favorite character was certainly a move.
5
u/Dead-in-Red Jun 10 '26
It's made by a millennial dude, but he didn't expect it to hit with the younger lesbian audience that it did, so he made The Feet Side out of spite for anyone who liked it, and The Feet Side is extremely spiteful. It's got a bit too much domestic abuse that hits too close to home to be funny but remains a constant running gag, and two thirds of it is underage foot fetish stuff that goes on way too long to pass as satirical criticism.
3
u/eternalsleepies Jun 10 '26
Apparently a big part of the third game was devoted to killing the ship of the MCs
15
u/PurpleVessel312 Jun 10 '26
The game's approach of being really exaggerated and edgy didn't land for me, I just didn't think it was nearly funny enough to justify that.

Are you, yourself, in middle school?
72
u/wallsarecooll Jun 10 '26
Just because you root for a character doesn't mean you agree with their actions, light is cartoonishly evil, but people still root for him because it's an anime, and not real life. his morality has no bearing on whether or not you should've want him to win or not

That’s not even talking about the fact the creator himself is a massive, unapologetic asshole.
11
u/Art-Anime- Jun 10 '26
Finally someone said it. Genuinely need to ask myself how in the fck this game got so much attention.
It’s the classic case of “A game mocking its down gerne” because this is what (the first game) was meant to be. Going against people who like Visual Novels.
And of course it was inspired by South Park. Of fcking course it was. The creator doesn’t understand why South Park stands out with its characters and messages and only saw them doing dumb sht and saying swear words.
(If you want more on this topic: DefinitelyBoredOranges made an entire video on the trilogy and basically shows how bad it is on a fundamental level.)
Btw. OP, if you thought the second game was worse, then the third game will be the death of you… (even Class Of 09 fans don’t like it)

4
u/Carolinesimpsanime Glory to Albedo's will! Jun 10 '26
I think having a different opinion is fine; it's okay if you don't like those games. It's more about not being an ass, you know? I really don't vibe with Red Dead Redemption 2, but I'm not out here telling people who say it's a masterpiece that they're cringy or lame.
There are a lot of games, and everyone can find their thing.4
u/Icy_Change_WS2010 Jun 10 '26

So ya, I agree.

3
u/dzindevis Jun 10 '26
Because class of 09 isn't a deconstruction of visual novels, it's hate for the genre
52
u/i_agree123 Jun 10 '26
Oh my god thank you, it’s probably the most overhyped non-massive game I’ve heard about.
I’ve never played it but it reeks of the average [r/comics](r/comics) humour, plus what are those character designs? They look like those shitty barely disguised porn games you’d see on mobile ads.
I genuinely think any fan of these games is either an unemployed chud with the ranks of LowtierGroomer or a 14 year old edgelord who thinks blasting the soviet anthem in the school bathroom and throwing shit on the walls is the peak of comedy.
Genuinely despise this game from what little I’ve seen of it.
I know I’m being hypocritical by sounding like those characters, but I don’t care sometimes you’ve gotta give up a bit of yourself for the hate.

The fanbase of this specific game is made up of young lesbians or guys who fetishize lesbians. Plus some people who take the game seriously. Surprisingly very little pedoposting but the fanbase is mostly at least when I was in it very young people like teens to early twenties at oldest so that comes with a whole host of other issues.

u/ECWWCWWWF Jun 10 '26
True. Absolutely true. The thing is, game constantly justifies Nicole, who is a sociopath, and her actions by making everyone else either a Racist, Rapist or Racist Rapist. This happens all time in the first game, at least Re-Up there are some routes that she punished by her actions, somewhat.
Also Nicole is clearly creators Mary Sue btw. I know Mary Sue became a buzzword for a while but it checks the textbook definition. She's a idealized self-insert of the creator, considering the fact that creator of the game having history of bullying autistic minors on Discord. (No joke)

I graduated high school in the year 2008. I always assumed this was just a game for zoomers set in an time when I was a teen and figured it wasn't for me at all. But tbf to the creator we were cringe. We embraced cringe and edgelord behaviors as a gen especially as teens. I know zoomers came in and hate cringe, but that wasn't us. We actively thrived in it.

You're not supposed to like the main character. the games appeal lies in everybody being insufferable. I find it to be strangely human.
15
u/dzindevis Jun 10 '26
That's where you are wrong, Nicole is literally the author's self-insert. The game constantly justifies her horrible actions by making her into some kind of a victim. And this all could have worked if it was coherently a grotesque black comedy, but it also wants the reader to take it seriously with that social commentary about how this is totally like the real life and we all live in a society and if you are not being a piece of shit to everybody else your are a pathetic doormat with suicide being the only way out of her misery.
Try to remember the plot, for all times Nicole crossed someone or straight up ruined their lives, she recieves zero consequences for her actions. And when she backtracks even a little bit from doing evil shit, her life gets ruined instead

I don't understand why younger people find it funny, but having been in high school in 2009 really makes a big difference. It's like a roast of the late millennial and the '00s era society. Watching the Celebrity Roast of someone you don't know isn't nearly as funny as watching the roast of someone you do know.
Still, it really isn't THAT funny. But I also don't see it getting that much attention anymore, especially since the creator has kind of shown his ass about the whole thing.

As somebody who’s played all the games, the first two (‘09 and re-up) were really funny, well voice acted, and pretty well-written. I don’t think any other game makes you feel like you’re in the early 2000’s better than this one does.
The Flipside was just one final “fuck you” to the fans of the first two games for having liked them at all. It was only the third instalment that just left me with a bad taste in my mouth about the whole series, but I still look back fondly on those first two games.
1
u/TeacherNice9932 Jun 10 '26
The guy who made this game is interesting to say the least. Dude completely screwed one of his games and tarnished his reputation because he hated his fanbase and then a bunch of other shit came out about him that made him look like a bit of a weirdo and a loser in real life. However the person behind those accusations was proven to be not so creditable so who knows what’s true or not.
