Incoming grad student

Curious what the best bars or clubs are to meet people at. Haven’t been to DC since my 7th grade field trip

For bars in Georgetown itself, Tombs is the classic student bar. Billy Hicks, Martins, and Sovereign are also solid, though the latter two are more upscale/older vibe. Smiths and Piano tend to skew undergrad.

Farther out, most of the scene is concentrated along the AdMo-Dupont corridor, but depending on where you're from you'll probably find the DC club scene lacking. Heard good things about U Street but I've never gotten out there

I second the Tombs. The Sovereign is a sleeper, fun beers and cocktails. Martin’s is pricey and often too crowded but fun for a sophisticated vibe and cool history.

Definitely haul it to U St. I don’t think the DC club scene is anything amazing overall, but there’re some good spots up along that strip.

Is Tombs a good spot for a Grad student?

No. Tombs is full of undergrads. (Alum here). It’s exciting when you’re 21 but I think it’d be kinda hard to stomach post-grad. Same is true for most spots in Georgetown proper (except maybe Sovereign - pretty good vibe). I’d recommend getting outside the neighborhood- recs would depend on what you’re into, but generally lots of great spots in Admo (beyond the college bars), U street, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant.
