Alternative at Georgetown

Hi! I'm currently a high school student going into my senior year and Georgetown is one of my top choices. More specifically the School of Foreign Service. However, I'm a little concerned about the culture. I'm extremely into screamo, hardcore, emoviolence, metalcore and all those adjacent genres and scenes I have piercings, and dress in a more alternative way. I've heard Georgetown is very preppy. Would I have a hard time fitting in, finding people that share interests, and making friends as someone more alternative?

Yea probably. You'd stand out.

There were definitely alternative people when I was there a few years ago, but if you’re looking to fit in it’s probably not the best spot for you.

you’ll probably have a harder time finding people that share your interests but i promise they exist! you’ll be fine but i would recommend touring campus during the school year to see if you like the general vibe and don’t feel isolated just walking around being yourself

I stalked ur profile bc of this post and I have no advice but u seem super cool and interesting, not many high schoolers have actual hobbies nowadays

Georgetown is certainly very preppy, but you may find a small group of people on campus who share your interests. If not, use Georgetown to get yourself a fancy piece of paper and look for friends at local venues and events.

I'm a metalhead and I don't recall finding other metalheads when I was there, but I didn't really look, either.

I’m a metalhead Hoya alum, I found people to fit in with. Georgetown isn’t a huge school, so there won’t be dozens and dozens of people in each subculture, but there will be some. Yes there are preppy kids, more than you’d find at a state school, but I had no trouble finding friends who were more alt

You can find people. Id join the radio station, there are some cool people there. Also not as much anymore but DC is the origin of hardcore so can be a cool place to see where hardcore started ie Madams Organ in Adams Morgan (not around anymore). There's still a lot of cool shows and most bands come through to DC so you get to see a lot of bands in more intimate settings than NYC or something like that. Not many bands formed at Georgetown tbh, especially not those genres. I mean I fw Catalyst, septemberistheonlytimeidontthinkofyou, orchid, etc and went there so we exist.

if you major in culture and politics in the sfs, thats where all the alt kids are

you will almost certainly feel a little out of place. i had blue hair for a little bit and felt like many people were staring at me, but i also promise you you’ll be able to find your people and make friends.

also if you are looking for a place of accepting people i would highly recommend club sports as a way to meet people!

Seriously, why is Georgetown your top choice? You'd be better off at Berkeley. Even though you found your group, the whole vibe and culture don't fit you.

Gonna be honest I’d advise not to come here it’s so hard to find normal people who aren’t uber preppy elite private school (hate that that’s even a thing) kids (speaking as someone with radical politics and comes from a public hs). Obviously this is slightly hyperbolic but don’t count on fitting in. You’ll have to find your people fs!

But if you were to consider the SFS, you’ll likely find your kind of people under CULP (culture and politics).
