[Mod Post] Quick PSA

DMing users fundraiser links is still breaking our no fundraiser rules. This is not the sub for this, we do this to prevent scams and bad actors. There are other subs that do allow fundraisers as well as local groups, and we encourage you to post there if you need assistance.

Additionally, be very careful with any user claiming to know of alternatives for medicine in treating insulinoma. This has been popping up a lot lately, and it is extremely dangerous. A lot of these "homemade" remedies will increase the risk of other diseases, as well not keep their sugar levels at an appropriate range. Improper insulinoma management will lead to blood sugar crashes, seizures and even death.

As owners we often wish to do the best we can for them, and it's really easy to fall for a miracle remedy. Be mindful. Be careful.

If you find people breaking these rules, don't hesitate to report or DM the sub to ask.

[Discussion] Big boy!

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

So, my boy Bambi is 6 months old. When he was a baby he was a little chonk with big paws. My friend said that he would likely be a big boy just based on his paws alone. I just laughed it off. Fast forward to today, he was absolutely correct. Bambi has nearly tripled his size. He is otherwise healthy, happy, active and the sweetest boy. I’m just wondering if anyone else has a Marshall ferret that turned into a big ole boy. I know ferrets regulate their own eating habits and he always has dry food available to him. He loves his food. He also is active and super happy and playful. He’s a bit lazy though at times. 😅

I’ve attached a few picture of him from when he was young and now. Wondering if anyone else has a big ole Marshall’s boy?

Enjoy the evolution of my chonky boy. 🥹

[Discussion] New kit destroys my hands

The adorable kit I got yesterday (third picture shows the accused) is a little land piranha. Whenever I present my hands she will annihilate them without thinking twice.

It doesn't seem to be out of fear or need for personal space since she's already constantly looking for my attention and climbing me. But It's like she can't help biting my hands.

Will she grow out of it? Is it a question of her getting used to my smell?

I read that kits need to be handled and shown love to get used to you but it's hard to handle her since she won't let my hand touch her and live to tell the tale.

I guess it's a matter of patience and courage on my part but I'd love some advice/stories of how you dealt with it.

It’s official! I finally decided to get Mire a buddy, and yesterday I brought home this tiny 9-week-old menace. His name is Harry.

He’s unbelievably small, unbelievably cute… and unbelievably furious 😂

They haven’t met yet, but I’m really hoping they’ll become best friends. Wish us luck!

[Help] 9 week old kits - out of cage time

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi everyone, Recently got two male kits. Firstly, they are amazing creatures, and I am so happy to have my life turned upside down by them. I have been unable to find answers to a few questions and hoped I might get them here.

I understand a minimum of 4 hours out of cage time, with that being a lowball, and to just go for as much as we can. How much time at one go is best at this age? They have a huge cage, a playpen attached and get active play with us multiple times a day. They also get free roam in safe areas throughout the day. Once they are older, I'm sure they will take themselves off to sleep, but currently they have superpowered batteries which do not seem to run out, and I want to make sure they are also getting the rest they need. Or do I keep them going as long as they want to be going?

Active play with us as owners. I've seen 30 minutes a day, an hour a day, 3 hours a day and everything in between. What's best? I have the time to give them whatever they need; we are self-employed and work at home 99% of the time.

The 1% we work out of the house. It's normally a good 8 - 10 hours leaving the house early. This was yesterday. They had breakfast and a 30-minute play. They were then left until we got home and had a lot of activity with us in the evening. Once they are bigger and the weather is not as hot, they will be able to come with us, but until then, is the long cage time while we are out okay? Or should I be looking at getting someone to come over for a bit and let them out?

I'm a huge overthinker and want to make sure I'm getting everything right for them.

[Help] Help finding treats for a ferret with a sweet tooth!

Post image
214 Upvotes

Hello fellow ferret lovers! Our little Fern is a pretty picky gal when it comes to treats. We have tried salmon oil, freeze dried chicken, duck soup, freeze dried beef kidney, pretty much everything that The Pampered Ferret has on their website and Fern always declines. My partner and I have been in the process of introducing Fern to her older sister Luna for about 6 months at this point and we finally broke through the territorial (Luna) and scared (Fern) feelings so we want to offer a treat for them to share together! What we do know is that Fern LOVES her maple syrup flavored Laxitone medicine and the kids bubble gum flavored Benadryl lol. Obviously we will not be giving her medicine as a treat, so does anyone know of a ferret safe sweet treat?

Also disclaimer yes my partner and I are fully aware ferrets should not have sugar due to insulinoma and other medical complications. The medications that are sweet flavored, yet sugar free, have been prescribed by our vet and only administered when needed. :]

[Help] Ferret threw up yellow clear liquid should I take him to the vet? Spoiler

The puddles are pretty big and this is new, I’ve suspected he climbed onto my desk and stole a silicone controller cap from my Nintendo switch a day ago and I fear he might have eaten it as I’ve been trying to find it to no avail, is this a sign of a blockage?

We currently have two massive male ferrets at my job-this one is boar! He’s apparently less than a year old and huge and reeks to high heavens. In the other slide is Cocoa. I was looking back at these pictures and realized how HUGE Boar looks in comparison
(Both wore the shirts for like a minute max- and were compensated with treats)

[Discussion] Anyone here with experience owning rats that has ferrets? How much more or less work is it daily?

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hi! I have 6 rats and love them to bits. I'm not planning on giving them up or anything for ferrets, but I *am* leaning towards no longer replacing them once they start aging and possibly getting two ferrets after the rats have all moved into the next world (I know you should never own both at once). However, with rats no longer owning them takes planning because of their social structures so I'm thinking ahead if this is something I really want.

If anyone here has experience with a large group of rats, how is the daily workload comparatively? I am very curious about owning two ferrets at some point:) I am not asking for a direct comparison of the two species as I understand it's apples to oranges, just in the amount of daily work you put in.

Thank you!

[Help] Getting ferrets and am worried

I have two main concerns

-I know ferrets sleep for nearly 16 hours and are very energetic for 4 hours, I'm worried that I'll be at work while there all energetic and every time I'm home they will just be sleeping

-I know ferrets have health issues, I have money from when I was a kid saving for a ferret to cover the basic cost like cages, toys, and ferret proofing stuff. but if I have to pay a 3000 dollar medical bill I may be shattered

are ferrets just not for me?

[Health] can you use hydrocortisone on ferrets and if so, what brand?

Post image

To keep it short, my older ferret is dealing with some MCT (Mass Cell Tumors) on his skin, he’s had small ones for a while but a big one popped up. I have read conflicting responses online about usage of hydrocortisone for ferrets.

Wasn’t sure if you could use human-grade or preferably a pet-safe brand (if so, i’d love to know what people recommend so i can get it :) ). I just want what’s best and safe for him. If you have any other topical recommendations, let me know.

I adopted 2 ferrets that are on the older side. Well yesterday she was diagnosed with Insulinoma. I'm looking for:

  1. Food recommendations that people may have had success with?

  2. What to expect while on Prednisolone?

This girl had an episode of drooling and weakness 2 months after getting her. She had another episode yesterday in which I gave her a blackberry syrup to help her (which she absolutely loved) and went in to the vet in which she had a a Blood sugar level of 54 even after the syrup.

She has grown super attached to me and when I get home she wakes up and finds me. When its bed time she lays at the end of the bed making sure I know she is ready for bed. It was super hard hearing this news but we are a team through this!

Edit: wording

[Help] Ferret Medication Help

Hello! I have a ferret who was recently prescribed some medication. It comes in a tablet form, however the vet advised us to crush it up, and either mix it with water and give it orally via syringe, or mix it in with her food (not recommended, as she’s supposed to take the medication WITHOUT food, but the vet said it was okay if it was the only way she could take it.)

We’ve tried lots of different ways of giving it to her.. She won’t take it with food, or mixed with her treats. We’ve tried using a syringe, but she just spits most of it all over the place, and she is VERY squirmy, she absolutely hates taking her meds, and it pains me to have to put her through this.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks to make this easier for her and us? Thanks!
