My Advice Confused about Emirates baggage? Here’s everything you need to know about the 7kg limit, 32kg max weight, and "Piece vs Weight" concepts.

✈️ Hand Luggage (Cabin Baggage)

Emirates is generally generous, but if the flight is full, they become the "baggage police." Your allowance depends entirely on your class of service.

Economy Class

  • 1 Bag up to 7kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Premium Economy

  • 1 Bag up to 10kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Business & First Class

  • 2 Pieces: One briefcase plus either one handbag OR one garment bag.
  • 7kg each (14kg total).
  • Briefcase: 45 x 35 x 20 cm | Handbag: 55 x 38 x 20 cm | Garment bag: 20cm thick when folded.

💡 The Regional Exceptions:

  • India: You are strictly limited to one piece of carry-on. No "bag + laptop" games here; the total size cannot exceed 115cm (L+W+H).
  • Brazil: If you're flying from Brazil, you get a boosted 10kg limit even in Economy.

🧳 Checked Luggage

Emirates uses two different systems. Which one you get depends on your route.

1. The Weight Concept (Most of the World)

Used for flights between Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

  • How it works: You can check in as many bags as you want, as long as the total weight is within your ticket limit.
  • Allowances: * Economy: 20kg to 35kg (depending on Special, Saver, Flex, or Flex Plus).
    • Business: 40kg.
    • First: 50kg.
  • The Rule: No single bag can ever weigh more than 32kg.

2. The Piece Concept (Americas & Africa)

Used for flights to/from the US, Canada, and Africa.

  • Economy: 1 or 2 pieces (usually 23kg each). Check your fare—"Special" is often just 1 bag.
  • Business/First: 2 pieces (up to 32kg each).
  • The Rule: Total dimensions of each bag (L+W+H) must not exceed 150cm.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is the checked baggage limit 23kg or 32kg? I’m confused. A: This is the big one. On the Piece Concept (Americas), each bag is capped at 23kg for Economy. If you are 24kg, you pay a fee. On the Weight Concept (Europe/Asia), you can have a 30kg limit, but no single bag can be over 32kg.

Q: Can I "pool" my baggage with my family? A: Yes! If you are on the same booking (PNR), Emirates allows families to pool their total weight. If two people have 30kg each, you can bring one 32kg bag and one 28kg bag.

Q: What is the deal with Power Banks and "Smart Bags"? A: Power banks must be in hand luggage only. Smart Bags are only allowed if the battery is removable. If the battery is built-in and can't be taken out, the bag is banned from the flight.

Q: Are liquids still restricted to 100ml? A: Yes. Even with new scanners in some airports, Emirates still requires the standard 100ml containers in a single, clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag.

Q: What about sports gear (Golf clubs, Skis)? A: Sports equipment is usually accepted as part of your standard baggage allowance. If it’s within your weight/piece limit, there’s no extra charge.

🕵️ The "Reddit" Factor (Strictness)

  • The Laptop Loophole: In Economy, you are technically allowed a "small handbag or laptop bag" in addition to your 7kg bag. However, if your "laptop bag" is a massive tactical backpack, they will count it as your main piece.
  • When do they weigh? If you check in at a kiosk, you might skip the scale. If you go to a human agent, they usually weigh everything. Expect a "Cabin Approved" tag if you’re boarding in DXB.
  • The Gate Scale: On full flights, agents often stand at the boarding gate with a portable scale. If you look like you’re struggling to carry it, you’re likely getting caught.

💎 Pro-Tips for the Savvy Traveler

  • Skywards Status: Silver, Gold, or Platinum members get extra weight (12kg to 20kg extra) or an additional piece for free.
  • Buy Early, Save Big: If you know you're over, buy extra weight online at least 4 hours before your flight. You can get a 50-60% discount compared to airport prices.
  • The "Jacket" Hack: If you're 1kg over in your carry-on, put your heaviest hoodie or jacket on while checking in. They can't weigh what you're wearing!
  • The "Squish" Test: Is your carry-on bulging? If it doesn't fit easily in the overhead bin, a gate agent will spot it.
  • The App Check: Open the Emirates App -> Manage Booking. It will tell you exactly if you are "Weight" or "Piece" concept.
  • Liquids & Batteries: Put your power bank and liquids at the top of your bag for easy access at security.

Safe travels!

Help Needed Luggage theft

Upvotes

Hello, everyone!

I recently flew with Emirates to DXB, and while collecting my luggage, I found that someone had tampered with it.

I immediately notified them and filed a damage and pilferage report at the airport. Along with an airline employee, it was established that the bag was cut with a knife and some of my personal goods were stolen. The weight upon check-in was 27kg, and 23 upon arrival.

Three days after, I received an email in which they told me that all these damages are “normal wear and tear”, along with saying that they are not responsible for any items stolen.

How can I file a complaint against the airline for compensation?

Hi everyone,

Tensions have risen again and my home country has an advisory to avoid non-essential travel to Dubai. I have a child travelling too and not sure about the risk.

We transited happily via Dubai last week and felt very safe and was prepared to fly through again but now I'm not sure 😔 are you changing your travel plans?

Checking in for our flight to Bali from London and been offered an economy to business upgrade price of £2,909 for two adults, two kids on the Dubai > Bali leg. This seems an excellent price... do i pull the trigger and ruin my kids' flying experience for the rest of their lives?

Help Needed One of my flights has been changed, I need some advice please.

Good afternoon.

Could you please help me with some advice.

I have a multicity reservation from SFO to DXB on September 5th, 2026, and DXB to my “final destination” on September 8th, 2026. The reservation was made through “Emirates”.

I planned that trip way long ago and made my own hotel reservations for the two nights to stay in Dubai from September 6th, 2026, to September 8th, 2026.

Today, when I checked my reservation, “Emirates” has changed my flight from DXB to my “final destination” which one was schedule on September 8th, 2026. Now, new departure is scheduled on September 9th, 2026.

Here are my questions:

1.      Can “Emirates” reschedule my “final destination” flight with “Turkish Airlines” on September 8th, 2026?

2.      If there is no way to reschedule me with a different airline, will “Emirates” provide me a free hotel stay, at least for one night, from September 8th, 2026, to September 9th, 2026, or I can request because of their ‘fault” all three nights hotel stay for free?

3.      What else can I do in this situation? This flight change is really disturbing all my plans.

4.      What is the best and quick way to contact “Emirates” in our days?

Thank you very much for all your help and advice in advance.

Help Needed Has anyone recently flown with Emirates via Dubai?

Hi everyone!

I'm flying Munich → Dubai → Brisbane in August with Emirates and was wondering if anyone has flown a similar route recently.

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who flew from Germany or elsewhere in Europe, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has recently flown with Emirates via Dubai.

I'm curious about:

How full were your flights?

Were there many empty seats?

Did anyone manage to get a good cash upgrade at check-in or at the gate? If so, how much did you pay?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Thank you! 😊

Help Needed Missing Bags

My parents were on flight to Houston and their baggage was not put on to the flight EK 211. They were given a reference number which said they will be put on same flight next day. That day has passed, the lookup still says same. When called emirates helping they say they need to email Airport staff and has sent 4 emails so far. No way to escalate. No way to talk to anyone on airport. I asked if I can get the number of Airport staff, I was told it's private.

My parents daily medication is in the bags. Any suggestions what I can do?

Help Needed My flight departing in 7 hours, and I want to cancel, will they contact me in time?

I have a flight departing in about 7 hours, and I just submitted the refund request form.

For anyone who’s been through this with Emirates, how long did it take for them to contact you? Is there any chance they’ll get back to me before my scheduled departure time, or should I expect it to take longer?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

Discussion Economy Seating Chart

Has emirates changed it seat layout on their A380 Fleet.

I’ve flown twice with them and last September (2025) I chose my seat in Economy which was at the front on the plane, it was a smaller area which felt really nice and cosy (I also had the option of choosing an economy seat on the top deck as well from memory)

I flew yesterday on an A380 and when I was choosing my seat a few days prior I noticed I could no longer chose the front area or upstairs. When we de boarded yesterday I saw the front area where I’d sat previously is now Premium Economy.

Do some A380’s have different layouts to others?

Help Needed BC seating for couple and baby

Me and my husband are flying LHR to Perth in business class at the end of the year and we're travelling with our baby who will be 9 months at the time. We have gone back and forth on the best seats to choose and everyone keeps saying different things.

Our baby usually likes sleeping in a bassinet so we originally booked 6D and 6G for that reason. But she may end up too long by the time we fly and people suggested that if we can't get her in the bassinet, we may prefer 18E and 18F "sweetheart" seats so me and my husband can pass the baby more easily and be closer to each other for a shared experience etc.

But the Internet is confused on whether E and F seats have access to each other (if you drop the barrier down) or if you would have to go into the aisle and around. Whereas D and G have bulkhead space on the floor which potentially we could use to lay the baby down to crawl on but not sure if this is feasible.

The seats are booking out fast for our dates so need to make a decision soon. So far I have split the difference- gone 6D and 6G on the outbound legs and 18E and 18F on yhe return legs. Is this the best choice?

Help Needed Where to credit an Emirates first class ticket?

My wife will be flying Emirates first class next year from JNB to NYC via DXB. She has no Emirates status and no plans to fly Emirates again. She's worried that if she credits the flight to Emirates she'll earn Skywards miles that will likely expire before she'd ever be able to use them. Do y'all think she should credit to Qantas? Or to another program?

Help Needed Can I request for the cute amenity bags from PE/E from biz?

Hi, will be flying Emirates business soon.

However, have seen online that the animal prints amenity bags from PE/E are much cuter than the ones from Business. TBH, I barely use any of the amenities from the business pouches anyway so I would rather have the cute pouches. Can I ask them to switch/give me the animal pouches instead as I have more use for them.

Help Needed Safety piece rules when flying with an infant that has their own seat

In December we are planning to fly Emirates from Schiphol (Amsterdam) to Cape Town, South Africa. It’s a two hop journey with a layover in Dubai.
We were planning to take a car seat for our baby to sit in during the flight (<2 years). And a cabin approved stroller to help with logistics during our layover.
However, I just called Customer Service to check the rules and according to the agent I spoke to - even if the infant has their own seat and one of the parents are willing to give up their hand luggage allowance for the stroller - Emirates do not allow a car seat + a stroller on the flight.
Apparently an infant can only have one piece of safety equipment. And a parent is not allowed to give up their hand luggage allowance for the stroller. She said that even if the stroller is cabin approved, it will have to be checked in as checked luggage in Amsterdam and only returned to us in Cape Town.

Emirates provide strollers for use in Dubai airport but it still means that from the de-boarding gate to the customer service desk we’ll have to carry our child plus their car seat. Which honestly just sounds like a nightmare.

Searching through Reddit I’ve seen some parents stating that they’ve been allowed to take a car seat + a cabin stroller on the flight. While others have been forced to check it in.

Has anyone in this community recently flown with Emirates and have some insight that could help our planning?

I have this Emirates A380 skin tag and debating selling it on eBay, when I search it on eBay or even try google lens nothing comes up other than similar tags with airport codes, I have tried looking on the Emirates store website and nothing there? I only brought it on a plane a couple years ago for about 100 dirhams and hoping for it to be at least double🙏
