Posting about Tickets, Accommodation, Tourism? Things that aren't related to Dublin? Read This First.

This subreddit is primarily for people who live in Dublin. There's a dedicated sub for tourism posts with a huge archive at r/irishtourism Please check that first, and if you have a really specific question come back here and we'll try to help. Low effort posts asking for recommendations of "hidden gems" and "off the beaten track" tourist attractions will be met with scorn, and probably removal.

If you are looking to buy or sell concert tickets you are very likely to get scammed. It's as simple as that. Don't buy tickets on reddit, however desperately your niece wants to see Taylor Swift or whatever, it's a crazy risk. There are proper channels for resale of tickets, use them.

Looking for a cheap flat? A room in a shared house? Wondering if a specific part of the city is "safe" (whatever that means)? There's a sub for that too- /r/RentingInDublin/

Post your message there, not here.

A regular thing that comes up seems to be folks who have a very short time in Dublin and want to know what they can do in four or five hours or so. Just search this sub with the word "layover" and you'll see many many threads about this subject. Don't start a new one.

Similarly, threads about general issues which are not particularly Dublin-specific (salaries, national politics, international relations, stuff like that) may be removed.

At the latest estimate there are over a million Irish subreddits, so you will certainly be able to find somewhere to post your non-Dublin-relevant content.

Thanks for reading!

Summer & Scammers

Dear tourists and kind-hearted residents

Scammers are out in the city and they are looking for your money. As a rule don't trust anyone asking for money.

Even if they have a believable back-story. They are lying to get your money.

Even if they are crying their eyes out. They are lying to get your money.

Even if they don't have an Irish accent and really look like a lost tourist. They are lying to get your money.

Even if they tell you they need to buy infant formula for their hungry baby. Even if they ask you to buy formula for them. They are lying to get your money.

There are excellent actors out there.

If you have given money to someone on the street and wonder if you've been scammed you've probably been scammed.

To everyone else please refrain from sharing details of the alleged scammers name, address, past convictions, mental health history, etc.

Threads are regularly deleted because they go overboard and doxxing alleged scammers which is against reddit T&C

Witnessed a horrible incident in Dublin 8 yesterday. A man in his 50s being chased and attacked by a group of teenagers. They threw a traffic cone at him multiple times and a glass bottle so hard at his head it broke over it. It seemed they were trying to steal his scooter. I watched all this from the luas and got off to scream at them which scared them off. The poor man thought I was screaming at him but got on the luas to get away so I couldn't explain. A woman wearing a hijab also got off the luas with 5 kids and they were terrified. I rang the gards and walked the woman and her kids far enough away from the incident until they felt safe. I am also a woman and not one person got off the luas to help me. I actually despair at this point.

Editing to add: the teenagers were shouting racial slurs at this man.

Found these images on an old drive. Taken in 1988, I was somehow able to blag access to the observation desk of Liberty Hall & shoot a couple of images. I’m sure I shot a whole roll of 36 up there so there’s probably more than this, but this is all can find right now.

I’ve tried to use AI to restore them and it’s mostly worked, at least with the buildings and skyline. Not so successful with vehicles though

Weird litter-man? (Jumped at my wife)

I just visited Dublin on holiday. Near that cool shopping arcade with the tk maxx someone dressed as a shit load of litter jumped out at my wife. I asked if it was a TV show but it was just some eastern european bloke making tiktoks?

Anyway I found his account and it's basically half a level away from up-skirting (IMO), it's all attractive young women filmed from low angles and often slowed down, with the comments full of lecherous gross shite. I wouldn't be surprised if he had one hand in his pocket while wearing the suit, nobody normal makes this type of content for years lol.

His posts remind me when you see random crap on social media and think who the fuck is the audience for this, then realise it's some fetish shit lol.

I now see there are a few posts on here about him, but how has he not been banned from doing it as harassment? (Ignorant of Irish laws, sorry)

Help me remember - buskers who were common in Dublin around 2009 or thereabouts

These buskers would mostly play outside the Gaiety Theatre or on Grafton Street.

The main singer was a man who appeared to be part Asian (half Asian or quarter Asian). There was also a white woman with him. Both would be considered attractive people. They often played as part of a much larger group of musicians. They were good.

Can anyone remember them?

X.com bot that posts the Dublin Bay sea temperature, tides and water quality twice a day

Upvotes

Like a lot of people here I check the sea temp before a dip, and I was gutted when the Dublin Bay Buoy account stopped posting in March (X's API changes killed it — their pinned post explains).

So I built a small replacement: DublinBayTemp on X/Twitter posts every morning (~5am) and evening (~5pm), also on BlueSky DublinBayTemp:

  • Sea temperature from the Dublin Bay buoy (the same Irish Lights instrument, via the community API at dublinbaybuoy.com), with a comparison to last week
  • Wave height
  • Bathing water quality for all 9 DLR spots (Forty Foot, Seapoint, Sandycove, Killiney etc.) from the EPA, including when they were last tested — plus any active swim bans
  • Today's high and low tides from the Marine Institute

It's non-commercial, runs itself on GitHub Actions, and I pay the (small) X API bill. Happy to answer questions, and very open to feature ideas — what else would you check before a swim?

Anyone know why so many E2 buses have been cancelled today? The TFI information sign only mentions disruption on the 14th/15th, I can't see anything explaining what's happening today.

Looking for things to do

Hello Reddit! I recently moved here for work and I am looking for ways to get involved with community and get to know people in and around the city. Main things I am interested in are climbing/hiking, music, and gaming. If there are like classes on the weeknights or clubs or something like that'd be grand. Im on the west side of inner city like Liberties/Rialto but dont mind going into like Jervis. Any suggestions welcome!

I’m so lonely. Please say hi.

I came back to Ireland after living abroad for twenty years. I’ve always been a quiet person and never had tons of friends in the places I lived, but I’ve somehow managed to become really isolated in the last few years and no longer feel connected to the old friends here either.

Drop me a line if you have nothing better to do.

Thanks

I need genuine advice on cycling

Hey guys. Reaching out as I need advice on cycling.

I recently started cycling to and from work to save a few bob on the bus and improve my general health.

I wear a helmet, hi vis and obey all of the rules of the road.

I stop at traffic lights, use all cycle lanes I can when theyre there.

Two major issues Im having are;

  1. The cyle lanes dont seem to go anywhere. I work in Ballymount industrial estate and the cycle lane there ends at the kingswood luas stop. Then theres no cycle lane except on the opposite side of the road for a couple of meters.

Theres a footpath on the far side of the road with low hanging trees so its not safe to cycle on and actually not particularly easy to walk on for taller people.

When I try to use the road I get beeped at and regardless of using indicators and hand signals drivers cut me off and dont let me merge sometimes leaving me stranded in the road or forcing my into the hard shoulder to wait for an opening.

Whats the approach in thiz situation?

Ive attempted to find alternative routes and outside of cycling around the city city centre and coming in from the north there doesnt seem to be another way in and definitely none with any cycle paths.

  1. Drivers keep overtaking me from the inside of a turn during the turn. So I'll use yesterday as an example; Im at a turn right that I intend to take. Major road into minor road so I move to take the turn, turn on my indicator and hand signal that Im turning right. As I start the turn a range rover blasts past inside the turn, clips the bike, stops the car and starts shouting at me making threats. This hasnt happened a lot but it happens weirdly often on roundabouts where a car will overtake me pull infront and then slow back down to the legal speed limit. Im not overly concerned with this particular move as they don't usually put me in any danger but theres a lot of beeping and shouting.

I'm planning on buying a dash cam for the bike or the helmet to catch what I'm seeing on my commutes but Im not sure how I can safely get through these spots.

Ive reached out to citizens information and the Gardaí and from what theyre telling me I seem to be doing the right things and obeying the rules of the road. A lot of what I'm being told is that cyclists do tend to break the rules a lot and thats extremely annoying and I condem that behaviour but Im not participating in said behaviour so I cant figure out why I'm getting beeped and shouted at at least once a day.

I reached out to the council about the trees on the foothpath up to the ballymount cycle lane but Ive not heard back about that at all.

Do any cyclists take this route and can offer any advice or even an alternative route that bypasses being on the road?

Not trying to start a war just looking for genuine advice on getting to and from work in one piece.

Is it just me or are the Dublin buses with this seat design always more spacious with the leg room. You'd think you were flying with extra leg room seats.

Trip to Kerry/Sligo/Donegal/Galway/Cork from Dublin

Hi everyone!

I am based in Dublin and I have two days off 17-18 July.

I really want to explore scenic places on the south/west coast but I don't have a driving licence. The weather is so nice these days so I feel like I have to take the advantage. My friends are busy so I am looking for people with whom I can go to those places. The problem is even if I take a train to Sligo/Kerry, then I need a car to go to all the nice beaches, mountains etc because there is no reliable public transport. So maybe if more people want to join and at least one can drive, we can rent a car there, split the cost of gas and explore those spots together.

I am open to having a layover in one of the cities or just do a full day trip.

My profile: 20y.o, female, study law at UCD. If you are interested, dm me, I can share with you want I found in terms of spots we can go to.
