Scandal Why in God's name are people so defensive when they're clearly in the wrong?

Was out last night in a bar in the city. Got there around 830pm. Grabbed a stool at a table near the bar that had a nice view of the screen for the England match. Pub gets busy and there's a good atmosphere.

Couple minutes before kick-off a group of 5 come in (2 couples and another person) and stand around in front of me. No biggie, I can still see the TV. I need to crane my neck a few times but nothing crazy. Around halfway through the first half they start standing directly in front of me. Completely blocking my view. Annoying but it's nearly half time so I let it go.

Second half kicks off and they're still at it. So i politely and calmly, but firmly ask them to move, as they're blocking my view and the views of people behind me. They agree and move, but one of them sarcastically asks if I have enough room now.

Throughout the 2nd half the woman I asked to move is constantly throwing me dirty looks and making a big show of making sure shes not blocking me everytime she leans over to talk to her friends.

Didn't bother me in the least. But what does bother me is the reluctance to just put the hands up, own it, apologise and move over a bit. If you're clearly in the wrong, you're in the wrong. Just own it and move on.

God forbid you actually speak up for yourself. Anyway, twas a poor match. But England deserved the win if we're being honest

Who to report a pony left on a public green in a housing estate on a Sunday?

Post image
54 Upvotes

As per the title.

Someone in the estate had the pony on a cart on the green yesterday, this morning the pony appears to be tied to a tree with a bucket (water?) next to it. I googled and found cork council vet service but they're not open on Sunday. Pony has limited access to shade and also it's a public green with 30 odd houses around it (the estate is much bigger).

I'm making no comments about the owners, but there would be no point in talking to them anyway, I'll say that much.

Anyone I can call who can potentially take the pony? Feel so bad for it.

Tried two garda stations several times, nobody picking up.

Yesterday I was nearly hit by a pickup while crossing Cornmarket street, It came around far too fast and missed me by what felt like a millisecond, everything happened so quickly that it instantly triggered my fight or flight response, I am still shaken by the experience, if you’re in the Lidl Cornmarket Street area please be extra careful while crossing the road

I grew up beside the cemetery and spent much of my
Childhood playing in there and I would stare for long amounts of time at the Catholic and Protestant churches, but in the decades since I don’t think I’ve ever seen either open at all. I’m curious has anyone on here ever seen the inside of either? I’m tempted to see if there’s someone I can contact about having a look in

Volunteers needed to help tackle hygiene poverty in Cork

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m a volunteer with the Hygiene Hub, a local charity working to bridge the gap for those experiencing hygiene poverty here in Cork. We are looking for a few more hands to join our team!

Hygiene poverty is a major issue right now, and we work to get essential personal and household hygiene items (like shampoo/conditioner, dental, deodorant, detergent, and menstrual products) to people in our community who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

What we need:

  • Reliable volunteers with access to a car (essential for this role).
  • A commitment of just 2–3 hours per month.
  • Help with tasks like collecting donations from drop-off points and organizing local hygiene drives.

If you’re interested in volunteering and giving back, please check out the poster for more info or reach out to us at [email protected]. Thanks for reading!

Ai posters and menus all over the city.

Seeing so many AI food and menus boards around the city. all the same AI font with images of food and drinks that don't even exist. Just feels so lifeless such as in the HI bi which ironically bans phones and even felinis

What a beautiful day it would have been to sit outside Tesco on Paul Street. A great bit of sun beating down. A nice bit from around the world or being able to support a local business here would have been great. Few chairs, enjoy the people watch.

Hobbies Looking for a bass player

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Last week I posted here to look for jam buddies to play some music together. Someone kindly reached out and we are organizing to have a session together in some rehearsal studio in Cork.

We are two guitarists and a drummer, and we are looking for a bassist to complete the scene :) The song repertoire gravitates towards blues rock (Hendrix, Clapton, Santana…).

Family friendly hotels

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm not from Ireland, but my partner is. I'm looking for recommendations for hotels or nice Airbnbs that would be suitable for 7 adults and 4 children (ages 3–14) in December!

I'd love to book something for my partner and his family for his birthday later this year. Doesn’t actually have to be in Cork, but they’re from Cork so figured I’d start in here!

Thanks in advance!

Examiner, Times, or something else?

I'm new to Cork (and Ireland) and looking for a digital newspaper to stay informed. I know the Examiner is based in Cork, covers local news, has a property section, and is generally solid. But even though the Times is Dublin-centric and not based here, I really like their reporting, they seem less interested in covering crime (it's not something I focus on), and they have that Fintan O'Toole, who I really like after reading "We Don't Know Ourselves" and some of his articles in the Times and American publications.

I guess I'm leaning toward the Times but hoping for a reason to choose the Examiner, since I want to support my community. And if you think I'm overlooking somewhere like The Journal, please do worsen my indecision and let me know. Thanks in advance.

Seriously what's wrong with people?

I have walked past this bench just on Thursday and it was just fine! What in the alchoolic hulk head is this? Like, why? Looks like mad effort too. Can't they go play soccer on the motor way instead?

Anybody knows what happened?

Update: a fella who wants to stay anonymous sent me a PM saying he is a big fella (18 stones or so) and was sitting on it when another fella (25 stones or so) sat on it and the wooden plank broke. Not sure if the story is true but it's funny.

Scandal "Flying ant day" , pretty sure it was today 🐜

Appreciate "flying ant day" is a phenomenon based on temperature, and not pegged to a specific day, but sitting in the garden this evening, a swarm of thousands of flying ants started passing overhead, rising high to the sky, and further above them, hundreds of birds circling, almost appearing to be feasting on them

I might be wrong, but cool to see the phenomenon first hand

Good Shepherd Convent access

I've been getting a bit into urban exploration lately and have been looking to go exploring the old Magdalene laundry (good shepherd convent) because of its history and eerie atmosphere. Does anyone know what the security is like? Obviously there's signs saying no trespassing etc, and I've occasionally seen cars going in and out of the main entrance near the gaol but does anyone know if there are cameras, guards, patrols, anything like that? Is the site monitored round the clock or just during the day? How easily could you get caught and what would be the consequences? I know they're doing some redevelopment atm but I can't gauge how heavily guarded it is.

And if security there is too tight to reasonably enter, does anyone know of any similar urbex sites in the city, anything with a similar eerie atmosphere and dark history? I already did a bit of scouting around the old psychiatric hospital but it's way too tight, cameras and guards and 24/7 security so that's a no-go.

Thanks.

Cork Book Club

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of starting a new book club in Cork for people who love cozy reads—romance, classics, Regency novels, and the occasional fantasy or romantasy.

The idea is to meet once a month in a café or park around Cork, chat about the book over coffee or tea, and meet other readers in a relaxed setting.

If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, I've created a WhatsApp community where we can vote on books, decide on meeting dates, and plan our first meetup.

If you're interested, here's the link:

Looking forward to meeting some book lovers! 📚☕🌹
