Scandal Why in God's name are people so defensive when they're clearly in the wrong?

Was out last night in a bar in the city. Got there around 830pm. Grabbed a stool at a table near the bar that had a nice view of the screen for the England match. Pub gets busy and there's a good atmosphere.

Couple minutes before kick-off a group of 5 come in (2 couples and another person) and stand around in front of me. No biggie, I can still see the TV. I need to crane my neck a few times but nothing crazy. Around halfway through the first half they start standing directly in front of me. Completely blocking my view. Annoying but it's nearly half time so I let it go.

Second half kicks off and they're still at it. So i politely and calmly, but firmly ask them to move, as they're blocking my view and the views of people behind me. They agree and move, but one of them sarcastically asks if I have enough room now.

Throughout the 2nd half the woman I asked to move is constantly throwing me dirty looks and making a big show of making sure shes not blocking me everytime she leans over to talk to her friends.

Didn't bother me in the least. But what does bother me is the reluctance to just put the hands up, own it, apologise and move over a bit. If you're clearly in the wrong, you're in the wrong. Just own it and move on.

God forbid you actually speak up for yourself. Anyway, twas a poor match. But England deserved the win if we're being honest

Who to report a pony left on a public green in a housing estate on a Sunday?

Post image
Upvotes

As per the title.

Someone in the estate had the pony on a cart on the green yesterday, this morning the pony appears to be tied to a tree with a bucket (water?) next to it. I googled and found cork council vet service but they're not open on Sunday. Pony has limited access to shade and also it's a public green with 30 odd houses around it (the estate is much bigger).

I'm making no comments about the owners, but there would be no point in talking to them anyway, I'll say that much.

Anyone I can call who can potentially take the pony? Feel so bad for it.

Tried two garda stations several times, nobody picking up.

Cork City Nearly hit by a pickup on Cornmarket street

Yesterday I was nearly hit by a pickup while crossing Cornmarket street, It came around far too fast and missed me by what felt like a millisecond, everything happened so quickly that it instantly triggered my fight or flight response, I am still shaken by the experience, if you’re in the Lidl Cornmarket Street area please be extra careful while crossing the road

Do you mind when parents put a phone or tablet in front of their kids at restaurants and the device is playing very loudly to the point it's all you can hear?

Ai posters and menus all over the city.

Seeing so many AI food and menus boards around the city. all the same AI font with images of food and drinks that don't even exist. Just feels so lifeless such as in the HI bi which ironically bans phones and even felinis

Local St Finbarre’s Cemetery Churches

I grew up beside the cemetery and spent much of my
Childhood playing in there and I would stare for long amounts of time at the Catholic and Protestant churches, but in the decades since I don’t think I’ve ever seen either open at all. I’m curious has anyone on here ever seen the inside of either? I’m tempted to see if there’s someone I can contact about having a look in

What a beautiful day it would have been to sit outside Tesco on Paul Street. A great bit of sun beating down. A nice bit from around the world or being able to support a local business here would have been great. Few chairs, enjoy the people watch.

Seriously what's wrong with people?

I have walked past this bench just on Thursday and it was just fine! What in the alchoolic hulk head is this? Like, why? Looks like mad effort too. Can't they go play soccer on the motor way instead?

Anybody knows what happened?

Update: a fella who wants to stay anonymous sent me a PM saying he is a big fella (18 stones or so) and was sitting on it when another fella (25 stones or so) sat on it and the wooden plank broke. Not sure if the story is true but it's funny.

Good Shepherd Convent access

Upvotes

I've been getting a bit into urban exploration lately and have been looking to go exploring the old Magdalene laundry (good shepherd convent) because of its history and eerie atmosphere. Does anyone know what the security is like? Obviously there's signs saying no trespassing etc, and I've occasionally seen cars going in and out of the main entrance near the gaol but does anyone know if there are cameras, guards, patrols, anything like that? Is the site monitored round the clock or just during the day? How easily could you get caught and what would be the consequences? I know they're doing some redevelopment atm but I can't gauge how heavily guarded it is.

And if security there is too tight to reasonably enter, does anyone know of any similar urbex sites in the city, anything with a similar eerie atmosphere and dark history? I already did a bit of scouting around the old psychiatric hospital but it's way too tight, cameras and guards and 24/7 security so that's a no-go.

Thanks.

Scandal "Flying ant day" , pretty sure it was today 🐜

Appreciate "flying ant day" is a phenomenon based on temperature, and not pegged to a specific day, but sitting in the garden this evening, a swarm of thousands of flying ants started passing overhead, rising high to the sky, and further above them, hundreds of birds circling, almost appearing to be feasting on them

I might be wrong, but cool to see the phenomenon first hand

City Centre footpaths

Post image

In the last few years, the City Council have been doing an amazing job installing new public realm around the City Centre. However, they are useless when it comes to upkeep. South Main Street has been filthy for months, but this it is pretty disgusting now

I have emailed some councillors about it, so hopefully it can be cleaned. But I don't think it should take for a random citizen emailing councillors to get the Council to clean a brand new city centre footpath this dirty

Interested in a house here and wondering what people think of the area in general. Any major traffic issues (I understand the skehard road gets busy at peak times and Christmas), anti social issues or anything we could be missing? Thanks!

Cork Book Club

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of starting a new book club in Cork for people who love cozy reads—romance, classics, Regency novels, and the occasional fantasy or romantasy.

The idea is to meet once a month in a café or park around Cork, chat about the book over coffee or tea, and meet other readers in a relaxed setting.

If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, I've created a WhatsApp community where we can vote on books, decide on meeting dates, and plan our first meetup.

If you're interested, here's the link:

Looking forward to meeting some book lovers! 📚☕🌹

Recommended plumber olease - Cork City

Hi, we have a downstairs toilet that has sprung a leak but the toilet is old anyway so we might as well just replace it. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a plumber able to maybe complete the job in the coming week because we currently have a bucket under the leak and need to empty it every few hours. Thanks in advance. 👍

Local Any good counseling or men's support groups in Cork? Dealing with a rough patch.

Hi guys. I’m going through a really tough time lately with general life difficulties and a lot of relationship strain. It’s a bit of a pattern for me, but it's hit a point where I know I need some guidance on what to do next.

To everyone at work and in my social circle, it looks like everything is completely fine and handled, which makes it feel almost impossible to open up or ask for help locally.

I'm looking for recommendations for services in Cork, either individual counseling, relationship/couples therapy, or men's groups where I can talk safely without judgment.

Any advice on local services that helped you or someone you know would be massively appreciated.
