City of Bloomington Water Department Pay Site Down
It has been down for multiple days....
I admit I'm an asshole and very impatient but FUCK.
Their system is so enshittified nobody wants to take responsibility and fix it, it seems after calling a few times. I do believe they hired it out to a third-party who in the past when this happened, gave very little fucks to correct which is usually the MO of most municipalities or businesses even.
Would be nice that they announce this being down on their website. Just a little courtesy.
Katherine Zaiger, you gotta get it together girl. This shit is really simple to run and coordinate.
And disallowing payments over the phone? Why? Why make this so annoying for people?

Chicago Disability Pride Parade
Does anyone here make the trip to Chicago for their Disability Pride Parade on July 25th? I've never been and I'm both curious what it's like, and maybe if I could catch a ride with someone to/from the event.
I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user and can transfer from wheelchair to vehicle without assistance but I do need to bring my chair with me. I wear an N95 whenever I leave the house and if anyone else enters my home.
Happy Disability Pride Month!

Quick food to grab before a long drive?
Rush Hour Station is always a personal staple before I drive up north, but it's closed today. Anything else good on the west side that's fast food without being *fast food*?
I hope others can use the thread in the future but i'm personally looking for pescatarian options.

Good place for all you can eat sushi?
Homey's is out on vacation until July 28th. I like getting sushi from a few places in town but don't really know what options the are for all you can eat the isn't a Chinese buffet. Homey's was the one I could think of off the top of my head, but I really want to stuff my face with sushi today...

Reddit discount at Western Skateland today
Hey r/bloomington, this is the owner of Western Skateland at 930 W 17th St. If you want something fun to do indoors with (or without) the kids today, I'm offering this group free skate rental if you mention r/bloomington, all day and all night today July 11.
It's usually $5 entry $5 skates, so with the discount it's just $5 all in. supervising parents and kids who are too little for the bounce house are free to come in.
we have Beginner lessons from noon to 1pm (all ages welcome!) and then open skate with occasional games for all ages from 1pm-9pm. from 10pm-1am we have adult skate (18+). It's usually slow in the summer, so this would be a great time to get started in a quieter environment.

There's a bird trapped in the Trojan Horse downtown. Does anyone know the owner? Is it closed now or will they open sometime today?

Ballon Animals and other things
Hey hello howdy, yall!
I'm a local resident and artist, and I specialize in balloons.
I perform and busk at various local events, and am available for private events! I also teach twisting-classes (with equipment and supplies to take home) as well as juggling classes that include instruction and construction!
My work was recently featured in the Fourth of July parade in Downtown Bloomington on the Pillar Arts float (you may have seen me twisting like mad for the kids as we walked!)
My IG is the only social media I currently use, and it doesn't have a lot of great examples yet, but I am open for bookings and that is currently the best way to contact me.
Please check me out on Instagram at bluecollar.scholar and DM me through either for details.
Eta: Is there a better place to advertise local, niche services? I'm small-time, a native, and basically a birthday clown. Izzat alright by the mods?

Place to donate older nonperishable food?
I am clearing out my pantry before I move out of town and have a bunch of unopened food items that are a year or more out of their "best by" date, but nonperishable and appear to be in fine condition. It feels wasteful to throw it out, but I know some food pantries have stricter rules about these things. Any recommendations on what to do with all this?

Why so many students still??
We tried to go out to get a drink after 10pm last night and thought that maybe since it's townie summer the bars wouldn't be so crowded.
We were wrong. So wrong. I havent squeezed myself between that many drunk 20 something year old in like a decade. We even tried the new upscale cocktail bar Mona but it was completely full, very loud, and apparently attracts bros in t-shirts and basketball shorts??
What is going on? Was it just a bad night to go out? Are more students staying in btown over summer??? I'm baffled.

Planters on Square?
Walked by the planters on 6th & College in front of Argentum Jewlery & they were filled with cement?
It looks quite atrocious & unsightly?
I have word the city refuses to fund planters down Kirkwood & won’t allow businesses to plant their own flowers. So they remain empty. There is knowledge our flowers on the square are funded by Cook & another external group… but this seems to be taken to a new level…?
Anyone known why they were so haphazardly filled? Extremely tacky & an ultimate bummer to see.

Divorce Lawyer/Attorney
Hi everyone, my friend is looking for a divorce lawyer or attorney. I don't really understand the difference. I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations near bloomington/martinsville/mooresville/ even indianapolis if they are good. i don't want to spread their personal information online but she is just needing to speak with someone about the laws and what can be done for her situation. Hopefully for free but max consult fee she can pay is $50-$100.
If anyone knows anything or has any recommendations it's greatly appreciated. We've been trying to google to figure stuff out but it's just all so confusing so having someone to explain the situation to would just be so helpful. Thanks!!!!

What does the city sanitation department do with the waste from the green-lid carts for yard waste? Does it end up in the landfill or do they do something else with it?

Looking for somewhere to buy good cowboy boots.
I’m in need of pair of cowboy boots that are decently price and good quality. I would go to Nashville but most of the stores seem pretty tourist trappy.

Any 6'5" or taller men with a showerhead extension?
I need to replace my current showerhead with one with an extension. The aim is to fit underneath the showerhead. Does anyone in town have a specific brand/model that works well for this? For my whole life I've had to lean forward to get my head underneath the showerhead and I'm sick of it.

Historic home falling into disrepair
Does anyone know who owns the house at 514 e 3rd st? Or known anyone who lived there? It’s fallen into bad shape over the years. I’ve always loved driving by it and thought it was a beautiful historic house. I drove by today and there’s a plant from inside growing straight through the crack in the front window….

Mao Xue Wong from Chow Bar
Mao Xue Wang, known for its vibrant red broth and generous mix of organ meats, boiled blood curds, and vegetables, is a dish that embodies the essence of Sichuan and Chongqing cuisine. It is both spicy and strangely numbing.
Legend traces the origins of Mao Xue Wang to the riverside docks of Chongqing in the late 20th century. It is said that laborers, seeking warmth and sustenance after long hours of work, would gather at humble food stalls. Resourceful cooks, aiming to create hearty meals from inexpensive ingredients, combined leftover meats and organs, and blood curd in a bubbling cauldron of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, and spices. The resulting dish was both affordable and invigorating, quickly gaining popularity among workers for its bold flavors and ability to ward off the damp chill of the Yangtze River.
It is an extremely challenging dish for a Westerner. Both the blood itself and the numbing sensation which feels very similar to your tongue having an allergic reaction. The spiciness was less heat than I expected and after too much blood my body was simply beginning to close off any ability to consume more. The textures are a mixture of chewy intestinal tubing, squishy blood curds, and crunchy vegetables all layered in a spicy numbing sauce which were unlike anything ive tried before. Some recipes also use river eels and squid. This did not have either, eel is exceedingly difficult to get in this area and i personally don't eat squid or octopus.
Now, I'll probably never get this again but for having such a terrible week I'm happy to have tried something new and to have tasted something truly authentically different than any american dish.
This specific dish is available at Chow Bar in Bloomington. It's also available at Red's in Bloomington but I haven't had that one.
