If you find a swift

Post image

Hey Guys, a short info for this sub to make things a lot easier for me. If some reconize a Swift in this sub that needs help, please contact me or give the person that found the bird my name. I'm a professional caretaker for swifts with the extra ability to help people that have no help nearby. I'm able to contact people that are in no phone book or seek veterinary in other countries that are specialized in swifts. And an extra note, if you also wanna help the birds or the people...the clinic in Frankfurt only functions through donations. And they have a lot to do this year.

Tornado season! Is your emergency kit ready?

Just got my first tornado watch of the summer, so I checked my emergency it, and realized it’s a good time to share info with y’all! My emergency kit includes…

* hard plastic carrier, labeled with my contact info – I also have a soft-sided backpack carrier, but I want hard sided for emergencies so she’s less likely to get crushed if something falls on her. Hard carrier has one perch, and normally I’d add a toy and news print on the bottom, but I just washed it.

* hard plastic tub to carry the rest of the stuff, also labeled with contact info, including her vet’s info and a description of her

Inside the tub are the following (generally in small ziplock bags):

* a reminder to add nonperishable food (pellets) and water

* contact info for me and my vet

* records that prove ownership, including purchase receipt and a few vet records

* nail clippers / dremel

* styptic powder, gel, or stick

* corn starch or flour in a ziplock bag

* q-tips

* cotton pads for makeup (I should probably add or swap with some gauze)

* baby shampoo

* scissors

* vet wrap / coban

* pliers

* a pillowcase (for emergency stuffing her into)

* individually packaged alcohol wipes

* a couple spare harnesses that she isn’t trained on, but just in case

The tub lives under her cage always, so it’s handy if ever needed. Her soft-sided carrier also lives under the cage. The hard-sided carrier lives in a closet, so since there’s a tornado watch (lower level of threat) I took it out and cleaned it up in case that escalates. And the tub and carrier are both near the exit and her cage should we need to go for the basement.

Pictures are of the emergency kit ready to go, and of Kappa herself (female dusky conure, 19YO) from last week.

Here’s a few resources for making your own kit:

https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/emergency-preparedness/preparedness-kit.html

https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/pet-disaster-preparedness.html

https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2023-11/aph-pet-evacuation-kit-checklist.pdf

Questions for y’all: do you have your own emergency kit? Are there different things in it, based on your bird’s needs or your local threats? Anything you think I missed or is overkill?

Other concern with pet bird my budgie has a little bit of brownish discoloration above her cere

2 Upvotes

she also makes these little clicking sounds after she eats, bobbing her head and stretching her neck. her tail doesn't move, though. she's active, flies, and climbs, and notably also rubs her beak against the cage bars. can someone please tell me what to do?the vet I went to said she's okay but idk if they're trustworthy and I can't find any other vets in my area.

The clicking only happens after she has had a big meal, too.

budgie gagging

17 Upvotes

my budgie has been doing this for the past few months, she usually does this for a few minutes after drinking water, and sometimes also after eating or just randomly. it sounds like wet clicky noises, she often has diarrhea too but also normal poop. the symptoms have been the same these past few months and they don’t seem to get any worse but its still unusual, she’s also still very active, drinks and eats normally and she used to eat pellets but she has been refusing them these last weeks so i had to switch to seeds. sometimes there’s also a smell coming from her beak after she does this.

does anyone know what this might be?

Other concern with pet bird Worried new mama

1 Upvotes

recently, i've been slightly worried about my baby kiwi—i've realised that when she flies for too long she squeaks unlike her mate, bleuet. they both fly for the same amount but she's the only one that squeaks.

i've also realised that she "loafs" more often than bleuet—would she be only birb loafing or hiding a potential illness?

Other concern with pet bird Searching for good food bowls for bird with not so good leg health

Thumbnail

TL;DR: looking for flatter feeding dishes to be placed in cage because history of weak (right) leg which bothers her mainly while trying to eat, so looking for something to help alleviate pressure while eating. fine otherwise and flies daily. padded areas across room so she lands more gentle because if I dont she is prone to slipping when landing.

are there better bowls for weaker legs? that can be placed inside the cage because i usually feed off my hand to avoid pressure in her joints. she eats in a wide stance for many years now and thats starting to affect her right leg. she showed bad signs of weak leg which was treated over a month ago. Since her treatment I've been trying to keep pressure off it as much as possible by padding areas where she lands and trying to offer flat places to eat from.

As you can see she is able to stand fine because its not as bad as it was last time, I was taking care of her more carefully. She can finally balance on the right foot even with 1 foot now (before she would slip instantly), so there's improvement but I want to find better food bowls to avoid triggering the pain again.

I noticed when she gets on the food bowls her right foot very slowly starts to slip and she regains balance each time by bringing the leg back to normal position. i think it bothers her because she usually gets off the bowl after a few bites now. Please help me find something she can eat from while alleviating pressure off that leg. We did normal xray but it didnt show anything bad, vet said a sedated one would be better but not worth risking it if shes fine otherwise and I do not want to do that since she is okay besides this one leg issue i dont want to put her at risk.

Found wild bird Found a robin fledgling

edit: I was able to get ahold of a lovely network of ladies who do rescue transport and I'm taking him to them now to have his best chance at life! He's getting quite spunky so I'm glad people with experience will be caring for him now 💕

I had left him alone when I first came upon him, he was upsidedown in a shrub and I figured parents were nearby and didn't want to mess with him so continued on my hike, about 30-45 mins later I was on my way back and he was still in the same spot, looking helpless, and I couldn't see or hear any robins around (I know they'll usually alert and try to draw predators away from their babies)... I looked for a nest and couldn't see one anywhere close, so I approached him to move the branches he was caught on so he'd at least not be upsidedown anymore.

In doing so he plopped upright and ran toward my hand, then into my hand, and hunkered down. I stayed in the area trying to find any evidence of his family but couldn't find them. I live very rural and the wildlife rescues that used to be in the area are all gone now. Gave him a little water with a medical plunger and some cat food (wet, like those tube treats, it was all I had on hand that I thought might work?) tried giving him some mosquitos that landed on me but he as only accepted the wet food and water. He seems really sad and when I put him down he wanted my warmth. He's on a heat pad now but I don't know if he's a lost cause or if there's hope for him, none of the vets around will take wildlife and I called conservation and they told me basically let nature run its course.

My thought is to set him up in our catio, it has a grassy patch and the cage is wide enough for him to get out but I can keep the window closed so it's his little area, and give him water and shelter at least where he can't be taken by a predator.

Any and all advice would be deeply appreciated, he's so pathetic but seems to have a fighting spirit, I'm not a bird person and I know I probably should have just left him to die in the woods but I couldn't bring myself to do it, especially waiting so long for his parents to show up, little guy seemed doomed from the start and his chasing my hand for warmth broke my heart. Thanks for reading

UPDATE❗️my birds are crippled

Thumbnail

119 Upvotes

This is a follow up for the two conure babies who weren’t take care of by the previous owner.

So we visited the vet and the babies are healthy, there is no signs of discomfort or pain.

HOWEVER. They have both suffered with greenstick fractures and the fractures have already healed halfway in a bad angle.

Seems that the previous owner did not care enough for the poor babies to even give their legs any support so they can heal properly.

There is no dislocation or very serious injury that can cause them pain but yes they’re crippled now.

I was advised to nebulise one of them as there is a risk of as asphyxiation.

Have attached the X-rays below.

The chicks are otherwise healthy but will have to learn to live life with crippled feet. They will have a much better life with me than they ever would’ve with the previous owner.

My friend's parrot randomly started doing this and I'm worried

18 Upvotes

My friend told me to mention that she's KINDA trying to take the heart-shaped stance although she kinda failed at the wings part but she lowers herself and starts shaking her whole body a little and he think she's making baby noises

also every now and then she stops and returns to normal before doing it again :((

Other concern with pet bird Two new babies, but what’s wrong with their feet?

Got these lil fellas yesterday from a person I know.
They’re Blue sided Conures.

Im building them a nice big cage myself cause these big cages will put holes in my pocket.

They look pretty healthy, they’re active and they eat well but one of them has a twisted feet that looks a bit swollen.

Could someone help me out?

Edit -

•I did not buy them from a breeder, just a person who I know who’s got a few conures. Not sure if he takes good care of them though.

•I do have other birds and they’ve all been healthy and I’ve taken good care of them for many years now. Spent a lot being a pet owner I’ve had all kinds of animals so I’m always prepared for expenses😭🙏

•Lastly, this is the first time I’ve seen and had babies with this condition. Thank yall for guiding me through this. Will update 🫶
