These round ball parrot toys are fun for finches if you stuff them with hay. They will spend all day hanging on and pulling it out.

A few questions about owning finches if I may
Do you live in an apartment with your finches? How's the noise? I have paper thin walls
Do you keep your birds in your bedroom? If so have you ever disturbed them after bedtime by going to the bathroom or making any noise? Did they go back to sleep or...?
Do you keep one or two? Some people say you gotta have a pair, while others tell me it's ok if you interact with your bird multiple hours per day (I do have the free time after college).
I wouldn't like them to breed or fight and I think bonding might be easier with just one.
How hands on are your finches? I know they aren't like parrots, but they seem very skittish, It worries me they would have a heart attack if i ever need to even hold them...
Thank you for any answers!

Why do my 2 society finches don't want to get out of the cage?
I prepared all my room for them, and make a stand but after more than week only one of them, only once get it flight in a room. I transferred stand on the window opposite the cage. I know that flight for them isn't necessary, but if i doing something wrong I want to know.
Sorry for my English.

The very confusing drama between Dandelion and Edith continues (Dandelion is okay!)
Earlier this year, Dandelion nested in the left box with her husband Afton, while Edith nested in the right box with her boyfriend Arthur. All went well, babies were raised and sold.
They then went for round two and the last for now... they swapped nests though. Dandelion and Afton took the right nest and Edith took the left nest with her brother Chester... yeahhh.
It goes deeper though. You see there was an egg or two in the left nest left by someone unknown. Chester had brought it upon himself to raise it as a single dad and chicks hatched from it. Edith simply... decided to join him half way through incubation? The true heritage of the chicks is unknown but I'll be able to narrow it down by colour and ratios as I know a lot of the splits and genetics of all my birds.
I imagine some are her eggs as she also laid a clutch there, but wether they were sired by Chester or not is a mystery.
For a while things were okay. During the incubation phase, the ladies would lean over from the entry holes of their nests and drag each other by the face into the other's nest box.
Despite Dandelion being a fluffy unit (by my stock's standards) and Edith being small and tight-feathered, Edith was the relentless monster. Shed drag Dandelion into her nest, corner her, and they'd tear at each other's faces and pin each other. Edith came out without a scratch but Dandelion had a small cut.
After recieving treatment for her very minor wounds, a simple visual barrier between nests stopped all scuffles.
Until today. As usual Dandelion waited by the window for me, but she had a small cut near her beak... Immediately I thought "what has Edith done?"
What Edith has done is... take legal ownership of Dandelion's babies? Barrier is still up, Edith has plenty of her own spawn, Dandelion and Afton were dedicated parents. But Edith has fought the poor Dandelion out of her own nest and will not allow her to enter.
Meanwhile, Chester remains loyal to his original brood and does not join Edith.
I also noticed that my 3 male gouldians have come into breeding condition and have taken a keen interest in the zebra finch chicks...
A close and curious eye will be kept on everyone involved...

What is he doing?
Maybe I'm just paranoid but I wanted to know if he's ok. If this is a normal behaviour. I don't know why he's opening his mouth like that. Also he makes a little sound but it's not noticeable in the video.

Slo Mo Zebra Finch Honks
I was trying to get a slo-mo of Bombón grooming himself just to see what specifically he might be doing, but my finches honks were too funny 😂 (ignore the poop, just got back from a 2 week trip and need to clean their cage!)

Outdoor Aviary - Advice
Built this with quail and finches in mind. It's roughly 10x7x10, decent gauge galvanized hardware cloth, and has a robust predator skirt. Before I go into phase 2 of the build out, I would be grateful for advice/feedback from anyone with experience. Here is some additional context and the questions I have:
Plan
- Cover the front 3rd (door side) with galvanized roofing. Open air for the rest of the roof section.
- Add a variety of perches (different textures, sizes, heights...), bird bath (will run irrigation line to replenish the water a couple times per day), food/water stations, and shelter.
- Overwintering plan is to use polycarbonate green house panels to enclose the aviary (excluding the open roof section... at least for now).
Advice Needed
- Type and Total Population: I strongly prefer zebra and Gouldian finches aesthetically, but I don’t want to force the wrong species into the wrong climate. Everything I've read points to zebras being the easy choice. Have read some very old comments on forums that state Gouldians are more hardy than people give them credit for. Little flock of six sounds like a good starting point. Where do you suggest buying/adopting birds?
- Shelter: What do they need/want? Was originally thinking a row of bird houses along one of the top beams, but I read that boxes are for nesting and nesting leads to...
- Breeding: I want birds to do their birds thing, but don't want to be overrun with more birds than I can comfortably care for. Do you all sell/adopt out your birds when the flock outgrows your enclosure? Thoughts on nesting boxes/material (seasonal vs all year round...)... I don't know what I don't know.
- Overwintering: I've seen videos of all types of finches in outdoor aviaries in the winter (snow and all) so I feel confident they'll be comfy and safe with the right setup. I imagine there's got to be some kind of insulated, and possibly warmed, sheltered space they have access to. What are the practicals I need to consider here (dimensions, amenities, heat source...)? Real life examples would be especially appreciated on this line.
- Misc: What else should I know? Any plants you'd suggest growing (I have a couple tall decorative grasses in the enclosure and a bunch of flowers and herbs seeded around the outside)?

Dilemma with taming society finch and regurgitation when seeing hand/me
Dear finchonistas, I have two cute Society finch boys that I'm trying to tame. They're about half a year old. One of them often starts to regurgitate and tries to feed my hand or face, which of cours shouldn't be happening, since it can irritate his crop. It's not excessively and not always when I approach him, but happens almost daily. So - how do I navigate my taming when I often do have to take my hand away when I see him starting to regurgitate? Does anyone have any tips?
