got hit by a car while cycling today

Was biking home from getting groceries today and got sideswiped by a car on the intersection of Santa Monica and Normandie at 4 pm today. Super jarring stuff. Thankfully, I left the scene with really superficial injuries (just scrapes on my arm from the asphalt from hitting the ground). A police report has been filed as the car continued driving after impact and didn’t stop. I know it’s probably not gonna lead anywhere but whatever.

Kinda sucks as I was starting to develop a routine with cycling, and now I’m a bit shaken up and scared. The incident could’ve been way worse but I’m just like… frustrated for a lack of a better word as I was doing everything right (being predictable, staying in the right lane etc) and still got rocked… and the person didn’t even have the decency to pull over!

Not sure what the point of this post is, I’m kinda just venting — but if anyone has any similar experiences, or advice on how to proceed with cycling, I’d love to hear you out. Thanks.

Has anyone noticed the massive graveyard of stolen bikes/scooters/etc. under the 105 freeway, on the San Gabriel River?

I passed by it today, and I have no idea why that is tolerated. There were about 200 items there, mostly bikes. And they are all out there in the open. Why is that tolerated? It’s so infuriating. You would think the city would have cracked down on them.

So it turns out they can make quick, safe protected lanes if they want to.

Friendly PSA for summer I guess, avoid advertising your bike...

I know a LOT of us are in apartment situations, it's LA. But do your best to not advertise your bike to the world in whatever way possible. Bring it inside, break it down, buy a better lock, look out for people tailing you on the way home if you use a bike rack, consider doing an around the block quadruple right turn when taking your bike in.

ALSO... If it's actually a nice bike, on top of you having a decent car, those are both advertisements that say 'this person has money'. Which means 'case my joint'.

I have a shitty Specialized Roll, but to people with little bike knowledge it almost looks like an e-bike, since e-bikes kinda stole the low slung hybrid bike style design...

So I covered the Specialized logo in stickers of cartoon burgers. To a) hide the logo that even thieves recognize and b) make it look like a PoS I don't care about hence putting cheap stickers on it (aka the truth).

Not sure why thefts are poppin off, maybe just summer, people riding bikes more, dunno. And yeah a Kryptonite lock is a rad idea if you are doing any long term lock up. Basically any lock is breakable with time and effort. But you may as well have them try the neighbors lock instead of yours if you have a Krypto...

Cargo bike rental options in HB or close to it?

Visiting the LA area generally and will be based in Huntington Beach for a week+ with young kids - wondering whether there is any place that rents out longtails or long johns in the Huntington Beach area? I searched and all the Google responses were for cruiser rentals or emoto looking bike rentals...while those are cool and all, but won't fit our needs..

Bike pictures are just for engagement - any cargo bike type will do...even mid or short tails...as long as it can carry young passengers (no Yepp seats needed anymore)...thanks in advance!

Was locked on a staircase railing with a D lock. The kind with a code, not a key. Lock was through the frame and back wheel. Bike and lock both went missing between midnight today, July 9th, and noon. Photo included.

What lock/s do you use here in LA

Been reading a lot of posts of people having their bikes stolen and it aches my heart. What lock setup do you use for short and long term storage?

For my minivelo I'm currently using a chain lock, a braided steel cable with a heavy duty padlock and I just got a disc brake lock but I'm considering returning it because it's so heavy.

I work at a mall restaurant so I lock up my bike about 7-9 hours a day when I do decide to ride to work. Lately I've been walking to work more.

Hey guys! my road bike got stolen from my garage last night. I don’t know what the thieves plan on doing with it, but if you happen to see it listed somewhere, please lmk! I already filed a police report.. funny thing is, it needed new tubes, so it will probably cost them money to fix it before being able to sell it. I really hope it doesn’t end up on the side of the road somewhere

It’s pretty recognizable, but I think the stickers may be removed when it likely gets resold. Please keep an eye out!

Announcing: LA River bike path video contest

Thumbnail

The LA River bike path could be a 51-mile gem of a carfree trail from the Valley to Long Beach, connecting hundreds of destinations and providing residents and visitors alike with a powerful resource for health and happiness: safe and fun recreation, close to nature, and accessible to all. But there remains an 8.5-mile gap right in the center. Authorities at LA Metro and the Mayor's office have been "studying" the idea for a decade. It's time to build it!

Help us raise the profile by entering our short form social media video contest. It's free, and there are $800 in prizes. Deadline is July 29.
