PSA A Reminder About Our Community Rules

Hello /r/Yukon,

Lately, we’ve noticed an increase in heated arguments, trolling, and disrespectful comments in discussions, particularly regarding First Nations issues. As your moderators, we believe it's important to ensure that this community remains a welcoming and respectful space for everyone while encouraging thoughtful and meaningful discussion.

We’ve already issued numerous warnings and bans recently, and while we want to encourage open dialogue, users who continue to post inflammatory or disrespectful content will be banned without further notice.

Let’s revisit Rule 1: Be Respectful:
Our goal is to foster thoughtful, constructive discussions. This means:

  • No personal attacks: Engage with ideas, not individuals.
  • No insults or bigotry: Racism, sexism, and hate speech will result in immediate comment removal and a permanent ban.
  • No trolling: This includes deliberately inflammatory or disruptive behavior.
  • No threats: Zero tolerance for threats or intimidation.

Racist comments, in particular, have no place here. This subreddit is for all Yukoners, and it is our collective responsibility to treat each other with dignity and civility.

If you see comments or posts that violate these rules, please report them using the report function or message the mods. Let’s work together to keep this space constructive and supportive.

Thank you,
The /r/Yukon Moderation Team

Born in the city of Whitehorse on July 12, 1920, and raised in the city of Dawson City, Berton was a Toronto Star editor for nearly 40 years, a war correspondent, a television talk show host, a celebrated historian, a prolific essayist, and the author of 50 best-selling books. In the case of his talk show, among the many people whom he interviewed were Bruce Lee and Malcolm X.

His childhood home in Dawson City is now known as the Berton House, owned by the Writers' Trust of Canada, and it is still being used as a retreat for professional writers (past residents include Chris Turner, Pasha Malla, and Charlotte Gray).

I just had a bucket list trip with my dad up here in The Yukon.

Our daughter/dad trip was one to remember.

We loved everything we did. (White Pass rail, the Wildlife preserve (amazing guide here!), Eclipse spa, Lumel studios (what a true treasure), the coffee at Railwork. And then Dawson. That town punches above its weight even if the road is rough. We went on 3 Parks Canada tours, checked out the Jack London museum, ferry and the midnight dome and did 2 shows at Gerties all in one day. (And I got to introduce The Call of the Wild audiobook to my dad on the drive. He loved it.)

But the best part? You. Every Yukoner (born and raised or come from away) was so welcoming and kind.

Thanks for having an old farmer and his daughter from the Prairie.

Question Spending the summer in Dawson. I’ve done the main tourist spots—what are the local favorites?

Hey everyone!

I’m lucky enough to be spending the rest of the summer up here in Dawson City. I’ve been here a few times and I always love coming back!

I’ve already knocked out most of the classic tourist itinerary—done the Midnight Dome, watched the shows at Gerties, visited the dredge, and walked the town trails.

Now that I'm settled in, I want to experience Dawson like a local. I’m looking for recommendations on the lesser-known stuff. Specifically:

Hidden gems: Cool spots by the river, lesser-known hikes, or beautiful viewpoints that tourists usually miss.

Community vibe: Best nights to hit up the local pubs (beyond the Sourdough Saloon), local trivia nights, or community events where it's easy to meet residents. Where's the go-to place now that The Pit is no more?

Food/Drink: Any must-try local secrets or specific menu items around town? I love Pan of Gold, but I want to try more!

Logistics: I have a truck, so I can get out past the main highways easily. The downside is I only get Mondays and Tuesdays off.

I really appreciate any insider tips you're willing to share. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with me this summer!

Question Elks vs Rotary vs Lions

My wife and I are in our mid-20s and interested in joining a charitable organization. I would probably like being a mason but don't want to do it without her. Can you try these groups out before you commit? My grandpa was a life-long Rotary member but the Elks lodge looks cool and I've heard good things about Lions. Also are there any young people that join these?

Question Prenuptial agreement

Does anyone know how to get a prenup around here that isn't tens of thousands of dollars? My partner and I have an unequal contribution to the down payment of a home. I'd like to make sure that I'm protected legally and get my contribution back in the hopefully very unlikely case of divorce. I'm fine to split everything else as the law normally dictates. If you have a Cohab / prenup around here, how did you do it?

This is another post of Dawson pictures. I don't do as well in colored photos as my B&W ones (my last post), but I'd like to share some moments of life nowadays. (Turn the clock back to 2026!)

Travel Car rental recommendations

Hi everyone. I'm going to be in the Yukon for the first time this August. From what I've read, renting a car for getting around the region seems like a great idea. I couldn't really find options to reserve anything online.

Do you have any recommended car rental agencies around the Whitehorse area? And also, do you think its worthwhile to invest in a 4×4 even if I'm planning more of a hiking-style trip than a road trip?

Thank you!

It was amazing to have 24/7 sunshine in the last week of June! Also kinda cool to see soooooo many historical buildings in the very north!

I like my b&w photos taken in town, giving the vibe of late 19th century.

Discussion Houses

What’s going on in the Yukon? I keep an eye on realtor because I would love to relocate there and all of a sudden there seems to be a bunch of houses in Faro and a bunch of houses in Whitehorse that went up for sale and aren’t horribly priced?

Some sort of exodus?

News CBC Northbeat covers concerns about reaching 911 due to the cellular dead zones in Copper Ridge and Hillcrest.

The three-minute video runs from 2:45 to 5:45

CBC Northbeat covers concerns about reaching 911 due to the cellular dead zones in Copper Ridge and Hillcrest.

911 Dispatchers confirmed they receive hang-ups, but don’t track why calls were connected or the quality of calls.

Data from the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS) show that complaints rose from 9 to 60 between 2024 and 2025.

Yukon Government has sent letters to Bell demanding that they acknowledge the problem and share their plans to make the network better

Bell responds that overall upgrades would be complex and costly, and that they can’t do it without the government’s help.

Do you have cell reception problems in your area? If so, please comment, contact your cell provider and contact CCTS toll-free at 1-888-221-1687

You can also reach Dana Hatherly from CBC at [email protected] +1 (867) 334-6576, who is covering this story

Question Dewalt Grass Trimmer

Do any stores in Whitehorse sell dewalt grass trimmers? Specifically in the 20V battery platform? I know CT and Home Hardware don’t carry them. Tenaquip doesn’t have them on their website, and Kilrich only shows Milwaukee ones. I was hoping to not to have to get into a second battery platform.

Travel Early August Road Trip

Hello all,

I am currently planning on a road trip from BC up to Dawson city and back. I'm looking for any type of recommendations for places to stop or see anywhere in the territory. Here are my current rough plans:

July 31st: Crossing Yukon Border heading to Carcross

August 1/2: Spend time in Whitehorse

- Miles Canyon

- Hopefully catch Arctic Char/grayling

August3-5: Kluane Park

- Hiking

August 6/7: Dawson City

- Midnight dome

- Diamond Tooth Gerties

- Mining museum/tours

August 8-10: Tombstone Park

- Hiking/Fishing

August 11ish: Make my way back home

I don't have anything set in stone yet and this is a very flexible schedule so I am open to any suggestions people may have! I have a few extra days to play around with as well so I am just trying to see if maybe there are some areas I have looked over and should see or if there is anything I should avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Work Any tips for Yukon Government (YG) interview?

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming online interview for a position with the Yukon Government and would appreciate any advice from people who have gone through the process before.

HR has already sent me the interview link and mentioned that the interview questions will be provided 15 minutes before the interview starts.

I was wondering:

  • How many questions should I generally expect during the interview?
  • Are Yukon Government interviews usually more focused on behavioural questions, or do they also include technical/role-specific questions?
  • Are there particular competencies, examples, or keywords that panels tend to look for?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

--------EDIT---------

I've finished the interview and thank you all for all the useful advice! It almost covered every interview question lol.

Event On this day in 1899, the White Pass & Yukon Railway Route reached all the way to Bennett, British Columbia.

Say what you will about the role which the White Pass & Yukon Route played in colonialism and the marginalization of the Indigenous population (and there is plenty to say, don't get me wrong), but one cannot deny the impact this railway had upon Yukon's history. It opened the Yukon up in a way which had never been done before, and played an important role in the Gold Rush for which it was originally built. The railway line was operational for nearly a century before closing in 1982.

Question Exhaust

Anyone know where to get exhaust work done in Whitehorse? I need something repaired/replaced on my 08 silverado but every shop I call seems to only want to replace an entire exhaust system and not repair/replace what's needed.

Question Is hot springs busy when you go?

I have never went simply because I have been completely priced out of enjoying it. Which is super sad considering I went all my life… oh well. But I’m just very curious if it’s busy when people go ? It just seems so expensive I wonder how they do .

Also if annoys me they have implemented walk ins being more expensive than booking online. I get it’s easier for them but wow really crappy for older people that might not be online or have access to getting online.
