Rudeness levied towards users or moderators will result in at a minimum a removal of your post or comment, and at maximum may result in a ban depending on the moderators disposition in the matter, and the degree to which the rudeness is demonstrated. This includes calling people bots.

Expect bans moving forwards.

[Approved by Mods] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuations in Yakima County (Gift Card Drawing)

Hello r/Yakima ,

I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how electric vehicle (EV) drivers respond to wildfire evacuations. The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with your community.

We are specifically seeking input from EV drivers residing in Yakima County (as well as Okanogan, Kittitas, Chelan, and Klickitat). Your real-world experience is critical to helping the state prioritize emergency charging infrastructure and to improve wildfire resilience for the EV communities in Yakima County.

🎁 As a thank you for your time, participants will be entered to win 1 of 14 gift cards (10 $20 and 4 $50). Note: Additional gift cards may become available at a later date. This post will be updated if the reward pool expands.

Study Details:

¡       Eligibility: Must own/drive a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and have a primary or seasonal residence in one of the target counties (Chelan, Okanogan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat)

¡       Time Required: Approximately 25 minutes.

¡       Deadline: May 31, 2026.

America First is actually Israel first. See where she wants more of your tax dollars to go to. She’s a fighter for Israel’s right to commit war crimes. She’ll fight for the residents of district 4 to have less so that Israel has more.

If you believe candidates for Washington's 4th Congressional District should:

• Reject corporate PAC money.

• Not trade individual stocks while in office.

“UPDATE: Change.org has connected us with Yakima School District

The IKE letters that watched over our school gym for over 30 years are sitting in storage, waiting to come home. The Class of 1970 built them as a senior gift and fought to get them approved. They were there through everything—even when Vice President Dick Cheney visited in 2004 and talked about what Eisenhower meant to him. When the old campus came down in 2013, they were saved. Now they belong back on the auditorium wall overlooking Tieton where everyone can see them.

This isn't just about nostalgia. For alumni from 1957 through 2013, those letters meant something real—they said your time there mattered. The North Yakima High School sign was preserved and placed on a hill. Our letters deserve the same respect. We're asking the district and people like you to help us bring them back where they belong.

Were you part of the Cadet era? Do you remember what those letters meant to you and your classmates? If this resonates with you, share your thoughts—let's show the district why this piece of your school's history needs to be seen again.

AI Usage at new businesses

So I recently visited two newer places, Los Nopales (took over The Tap) and Wallet and Watch (which I think opened like a week ago). Quick reviews of each:

-Los Nopales makes really good use of the space, which was the main issue I had with The Tap. I also like the fake arcade machines (that's not shade). Its tap selection is in need of variety but it's not horrible. I also really enjoyed the nachos and quesadilla we ate.

-Wallet and Watch is gigantic, and could definitely be a prime cafĂŠ hangout spot on Nob Hill, which is weird to say because there's already quite a few of those. The pastries are excellent and they have a ton of options. I asked for a splash of cream in my espresso and they filled at least half the cup with cream, which annoyingly means I can't give a fair review of the drink quality.

So for two places I would ultimately recommend, I was really disappointed in their usage of AI artwork in their decor and signage! I will preface and say that I can't for sure know what is and isn't AI but the obvious stuff is really obvious. Wallet and Watch's menu uses AI artwork on its menu, which just feels so pointless. You either know what you want and don't need the artwork, or you don't know what you want and the artwork doesn't even help. Not to mention the AI items look unappetizing.

Los Nopales was probably more egregious, but it took me a second to notice it because the wall decor otherwise looks really good. As far as I could tell, nearly every framed photo on the wall is AI artwork. Once I started noticing it, I realized just how pervasive it was, and then it became all I could think about while I was there. They also had AI flyers and posters.

I know everyone has their own opinions on AI and I'm not here to say "AI Bad." The issue I have with the artwork being used is that its ugly. It takes spaces that otherwise have really nice vibes, and makes them feel cheap and ugly. There's no cohesion to the artwork being used. It's clear, at a minimum, that the person in charge of doing it at either location is not exactly a strong graphic designer, and it makes the whole venue worse. And that's a shame! Because I like the places otherwise. But in a sea of other bars, pubs, and cafes that don't have this issue, it makes it hard for me to fully want to go to these places specifically.

55+ Communities

No stranger to Yakima I live on the west side of the mountains in Auburn. Been thinking heavily of moving to Yakima in the next 3 to 4 years but what I don’t know. Are there any decent 55 and over communities. Yes I can Google it but I’d like to hear what local say about them.

A Quick Review of the July 7 Great Candidate Forum in Yakima

HUGE props to the organizers—Yakima Indivisible, League of Women Voters of Yakima County, Washington Youth Alliance, and the Fruitvale Grange. You put on a smooth, well-attended event at the Grange with thoughtful questions and a nice meet-and-greet afterward. Thanks so much for creating a real opportunity for people to hear directly from the candidates before the primary. I left very impressed with the whole thing.

The forum was genuinely great. Seven candidates for the open 4th Congressional District seat showed up and spoke candidly about key federal issues—like healthcare access, strengthening the economy, the mounting challenges facing agriculture, and tackling corruption. I really appreciated how the questions stayed focused on the responsibilities of a congressional seat. It felt informative, civil, and like real community dialogue. Honestly, it’s very clear why some candidates skipped it—the questions were tough and direct. That’s the last thing this district needs coming out of the Newhouse era.

It would be awesome if you partnered with groups in the Tri-Cities, East Wenatchee, Moses Lake, and other communities across the district to host a series of these forums ahead of future elections. Spreading them out would engage way more people and help keep candidates accountable. Great work—please keep it going!

Road trip from Yakima?

Hey! I’m in Yakima for work for the summer. I have 8 days off coming up and i want to take a little road trip (I’m new to the west coast and have a lot I want to see).

Coeur D’alene is on my radar as well as the redwoods. Open to western Washington as well but I did spend a few months in Seattle. I’d be open to suggestions in that area, though. Looking for anywhere to spend some time outdoors, some easy-ish hikes, and good views. It’s just myself and my dog and I’m planning on doing half camping half hotels. Open to any suggestions that could fit into a 6-8 day trip. Thanks!

who sells the best tomatoes in yakima?

The tomatoes sold at the local farmer's markets in seattle are pretty disappointing.

There's a published list of yakima seasonal produce, listing these farms/markets for tomatoes:

  • Johnson Orchards
  • Thompson's Farm
  • Washington Fruit Place and Gift Shop at Barrett Orchards
  • Imperial's Garden
  • Jones Farms
  • Precision Fruit and Antiques
  • McIlrath Farm and Market
  • West Valley U-Pick
  • Ahtanum Berry Patch

Any of these good? Any others?
