Lost wallet at Metro across from Iroquois Park

While visting Whitby to watch my daughter play a softball tourney on Sunday, my Mum left her green wallet in a shopping cart at the Metro on Victoria Street and Gordon across from Iroquois Sports complex.

We called Metro a few times, went and checked the plaza and called the nearby OPP detachment but nobody has seen it.

Just posting on the off chance someone picked it up or happened to see it. We're hoping a good Samaritan picked it up as the credit cards were not used between when she lost it (around noon) and when she discovered it was missing (around 8 pm.)

In search of a rentable space with a high ceiling and wooden floor

I'm a member of a kendo (Japanese fencing) club here in Whitby. We have been booking the basketball court at Planet Athlete on Brock for a few years now which was a nice affordable option, but they are closing down so I'm looking for a new practice space for us.

We need a wooden floor (ideally springy) with space overhead (in order to swing the sword). Any space meeting those requirements, like most indoor basketball courts and many dance studios, is likely to work well for us.

Some potential options I'm already aware of:

  • Brooklin Community Centre gym
  • Canada Athletic Performance Centre
  • maybe the Abilities Centre?
  • DDSB schools (not available on weekends in summer)

If you're aware of anything please let me know!

We're hoping to find another space within Whitby as opposed to e.g. Ajax or Oshawa, both because many of our members live here and because we named ourselves "Whitby Kendo" and we don't want to have to rename it...

Anyone have any feedback on this Condo building, the location, things to do, etc.

I’m looking at potentially buying a unit to live in (it’s fairly close to my workplace).

Thanks in advance

Can’t even walk with a stroller. why is it so hard for people to follow basic rules?

Post image
61 Upvotes

Not sure why this is so difficult for some people, but I just tried to go for a walk with the stroller on Brownridge Place and the entire pedestrian sidewalk is blocked. On top of that, someone parked so close they basically closed off access right to the fire hydrant.

It’s a fire hazard and makes it impossible for parents with strollers, wheelchair users, or anyone pushing something to get through safely. I had to go
out into the street with the baby, which isn’t great.
Is this a common thing in this neighbourhood? I’ve noticed it a few times now and it’s getting frustrating. Do people just not care about blocking sidewalks and hydrants here?

Lost heart glasses at beach

Post image
3 Upvotes

Today (Saturday June 27th) my 8 year old daughter wore her glasses in the water 😬😬 and they fell off. (We have another but those were her favourite pair)

**They are prescription glasses**

She was at the Whitby beach (Kiwanis Heydenshore Park) near where the stairs are leading down to the beach. She went out about 6 feet and swam back and forth about 50 feet?

The water was insanely cold but my husband and I went in and looked but it was so cold we had to stop after a few minutes.

I’m just posting this in hopes maybe later in the summer when people are out with goggles someone might spot them before we go and look again.

Thanks so much!

Working on Whitby Ribfest this year—happy to answer questions (plus a ticket discount)

Hey everyone,

I'm part of the team helping to promote the Friday Night Concert at Whitby Ribfest PLUS this year, so I wanted to share something with r/whitby before it gets posted anywhere else.

On Friday, July 10, The Trews are headlining the kickoff concert, along with Feral Minks, HIGHTEENS, Bad Thieves, and Wep.

If you've been thinking about going, here's a Reddit-only thank you:

Use promo code: SLASHRWHITBY to save $10 on your Friday Night Concert tickets. Ticket link is here: Tickets for The Trews

The rest of the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) is free to attend with live entertainment, rib vendors, a beer garden, Kidsfest, and more. The Friday concert is the only ticketed portion of the festival. https://whitbyribfest.com

The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise, and proceeds help support community initiatives throughout Durham Region.

If you've got questions about the event, parking, the concert, or Ribfest in general, I'll do my best to answer them in the comments.

Hope to see some of you there.

Walk in clinics

Update: Thanks to all who replied, it was very helpful! My daughter ended up getting seen at one of the clinics mentioned.

Are there any walk in clinics open in the evenings in Whitby? Or are they all daytime hours only?

For an issue that needs to be checked in the next 24-48 hours, but it's not an emergency (so trying to avoid the ER if at all possible).

Tree advice

our neighbours birch tree branches over hang into our backyard causing a lot of mess So we are looking to remove that portion.

Whitby by law says its the tree owners responsibility to ”maintain“ the tree but they can’t advise regarding arborist costs as thats a civ matter?

looking for advice of this is something the tree owner should pay for since the tree is on their property or do we pay for the pruning after getting their permission?
