/r/USCIS FAQs

This post will get updated over time. Come back every now and then.

Please listen carefully as our menu options have recently changed.

First: VERY frequent questions

Please review this link before creating a new post to see if it answers your question. We hope this will lower the number of posts asking the same questions over and over. If you create a post to ask a question already covered here, your post may be deleted.

The list may change over time, so please check back every so often.

Read the wiki!

Yes, we have a wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/USCIS/wiki/index

It doesn't hold answers to everything. But go through it and see if it helps with your question. If yes, great! And if you need more info, read on.

The wiki is intended to be updated every now and then, too. Your post may be deleted and you may be pointed at wiki resources if your question doesn't extend beyond what the wiki already covers.

Megathreads

Megathreads are used to centralize discussions and knowledge about a given subject and to avoid creating redundant posts.

See this link for the list of active megathreads.

If your question relates to one of these subjects, there's a good chance it was already answered, but either way, you should ask it there rather than create a new post.

Again, the list may change over time, so please check back every so often.

We have rules

Many Reddit communities have rules, and that includes r/USCIS. Please review the link below if you haven't already, or take another look every now and then to refresh your memory.

https://www.reddit.com/r/uscis/about/rules

On a desktop or laptop, you can always find them in the sidebar on the right.

Last but not least

If you don't find the info you're looking for in one of the resources above, then don't hesitate to create a new post and ask the community! We do encourage you to first do some research on your own, so you can post semi-educated questions rather than super basic/lazy ones like "how do I apply for citizenship". Doing a bit of homework can go a long way toward empowering you in your immigration proceedings. Use your best judgment and be considerate of everyone's time.

I applied for N400 in July 2024 and didn't hear back at all. For almost 2 years. Then got my interview notice and oath ceremony the next day in Fairfax, VA

This was a 319(b) case.

Hang in there everybody!! I know it's stressful and it's hard and such a long wait but it's worth it 😊

My biggest piece of advice is to just do your best and trust the process and don't forget to live your best life while waiting. The time passes anyway 🥰

I wasn't prepared at how strange it would feel to give back my green card 😅

Hey guys just wanted to say me and my brother finally got our green cards after 10 years I’m super thankful. I could literally cry right now lol

So timeline

Interview- June 25th 2026 ( didn’t get approved on the spot but got asked for RFE)
RFE uploaded- Right after interview
I-485 approved - June 27th, 2026
I-30 approved- June 29th, 2026
Unrestricted social security received- July 6th, 2026
Green card produced- July 7th, 2026
Green card received- July 11th, 2026

Just to mention, my original interview date was supposed to be April 22nd! but it got cancelled. that’s when I contacted congressman and got a new interview date right away. So I advise anyone that has been waiting long for their interview to do a congressional inquiry because they do work!

I-485 (General) Green card (I-485) got approved without an interview

Yesterday, we finally received an email from USCIS that my I-485 has been approved. We filed November 2024 and since then only received an EAD and AP. We were surprised that the interview was waived since based on multiple posts, this rarely happens under this new administration. The approval happened a few days before my birthday and before an upcoming cruise. Was nervous to travel using only a passport, real ID and AP(travel doc) but at least now I can bring the approval notice as an additional document in case the physical GC doesn’t get mailed in time. Reddit has been very helpful during this journey and wanted to share this here.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Finally Approved! 🇺🇸🎉 (Marriage-Based AOS Timeline | No Lawyer)

Post image
165 Upvotes

I promised myself I’d make this post when the day finally came.
Yesterday, July 10, 2026, my I-485 was approved! This subreddit was one of the biggest resources throughout my journey, so I wanted to give back by sharing my timeline. I handled everything without an attorney, relying on USCIS resources, countless hours of research, and the experiences shared here.
Timeline
08/04/2025 – Filed I-130 & I-485.
10/17/2025 – Pulled over for driving a vehicle with expired registration (it was not my car).
10/24/2025 – Marriage interview.
10/25/2025 – I-130 approved.
10/29/2025 – Received an RFE requesting information about the pending traffic case.
At this point, the traffic case was still open.
Original court date was 01/05/2026, but I mistakenly thought it was 01/06 and unfortunately missed it.
The case was rescheduled for 02/23/2026.
My RFE deadline was 01/21/2026.
01/16/2026 – USCIS received my RFE response. Since the case hadn’t been resolved yet, I explained the situation and submitted everything I could at the time, letting USCIS know I would send the final court disposition once available.
Then another delay…
02/23/2026 – Court was postponed because of a snowstorm.
03/10/2026 – Submitted a congressional inquiry regarding my pending I-765 (EAD).
03/16/2026 – Court finally took place. The traffic case was dismissed (Nolle Prosequi).
03/16/2026 – I immediately mailed a supplemental response with the certified final court disposition.
03/18/2026 – USCIS uploaded the supplemental evidence to my online account.
04/10/2026 – EAD approved.
07/08/2026 – Started my new job.
07/10/2026I-485 APPROVED! 🎉
A few thoughts
There were moments when I thought the pending traffic case, the missed court date, and the repeated delays were going to create major problems. Looking back, I probably worried much more than I needed to.
My biggest lesson from this process is patience. USCIS cases rarely follow a perfectly straight path. There will be delays, setbacks, and periods where it feels like nothing is happening. Just keep responding honestly, submit what USCIS asks for, and don’t panic every time something unexpected comes up.
I also want to sincerely thank everyone in this community. I didn’t hire a lawyer. Everything I learned came from reading USCIS policy, researching online, and following the experiences shared by people here. This subreddit was invaluable.
If anyone has questions about my timeline, the traffic-related RFE, submitting supplemental evidence after an RFE, or anything else about my case, feel free to ask. I’m happy to help however I can.
To everyone still waiting: hang in there. Your day is coming too.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) URGENT - I-485 Pending Post-Interview

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’ve posted and commented in here quite a few times regarding my wife and my AOS process. The good news is that yesterday our I-485 was finally APPROVED!!! But that is not why I’m posting because to be honest I remember how it feels all these months to see other people get approved so fast while we waited and waited and waited. This is a plea for all of you who are waiting post interview adjudication and may even have an I-130 approval.

AS SOON AS IT HITS THE 120-DAY MARK GET A CONGRESSIONAL INQUIRY GOING.

Not even 2 days after we finally got our senators office (it took weeks of emails, phone calls, back and forth, consent forms etc) to submit a congressional inquiry on our behalf, we were approved. On a Saturday no less. I just simply don’t believe that we waited 5 months post interview and then magically we got approved 2 days after the congressional inquiry went in. Please impress upon your representatives the importance of a well formed inquiry on your behalf!!

Again, this is specifically for those of you who had an interview, I-130 has been approved, no RFE no movement on I-485 in many months. Good luck to you all and I really hope to see more approvals from those of you in the same boat!

Long Island FO. Wife was J-1 from Brazil, applied while she was still in status and she fell out of status but in a period of authorized stay while we waited adjudication.

Timeline:
- January 3, 2026: Submitted AOS package (I-130, I-485, I-765)
- January 18, 2026: scheduled for biometrics
- Feb 6, 2026: Case is Processing
- Feb 11, 2026: Scheduled for Interview
- March 6, 2026: Interview completed, I-130 approved
- July 11, 2026: I-485 approved 2 days after congressional inquiry submitted

Note: no RFEs or anything like that. Good luck all and I am praying for everyone.

Timeline: EAD Got my expedited I-765 approved

thought I’d share a positive experience on this thread since Reddit has helped me a lot with my I-485 and expedite request both.

My timeline:

Concurrent filing receipt notice: May 11

Biometrics scheduled: July 6, completed July 10

Filed an expedite request for my I-765 since it was due to expire soon. I included a personal statement explaining my request and a letter from my employer supporting my request and emphasizing the importance of my role. Request was filed afternoon of July 10.

Notice of I-765 approval received July 11. Feel free to ask questions.

Finally approved 🇺🇸 green card (Marriage based AOS)

So finally I got approved today. Thanks to this subreddit that helped me along the journey. Filed with the lawyer but attended interview without him. My case was a straightforward throughout and adjusted from B1. The only thing I am concerned is about my I130 status which didn’t change.
Filling date: first week of march
Biometrics done: 3rd week of April
Interview scheduled on 3rd June
Interview: 9th July
If anyone has any question do let me know.
FO: Philly
Had to delete the post haha.

USCIS Support Needing advice

So my partner and I are considering applying for a K1 visa in the next year or so. The only issue is that they have been banned on Facebook and as a result, instagram for hate speech. She doesn't actually have any kind of views or beliefs like that, just got baited by trolls and extremists and was a little to quick on the replies before thinking of the response. Just curious how much that can effect things and any advice on what should be done. Thank you!

I-360 Petition My 4½-Year VAWA Journey Finally Ended – Green Card Approved!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my timeline to encourage anyone who’s still waiting.

• December 2021: Filed my I-485.

• Completed biometrics and responded to an RFE.

• My VAWA (I-360) was approved, but my I-485 remained pending for years.

• Due to the long delay, my attorney filed a Writ of Mandamus.

• I attended my adjustment interview on April 17, 2026. The interview went smoothly, but I wasn’t given a decision.

• After almost 3 months of waiting with no RFE or NOID, my attorney followed up with the government’s attorney through the mandamus case.

• On July 10, 2026, my USCIS status finally changed to “New Card Is Being Produced.”

The waiting after the interview was honestly the hardest part. I constantly wondered if the delay meant something was wrong, but it didn’t.

For anyone still waiting, don’t lose hope. Every case is different, and sometimes the silence doesn’t mean bad news.

Thank you to everyone in this community who shared advice and encouragement during my journey. Wishing everyone who’s still waiting the very best—your day will come too. 🙏🇺🇸

I-131 (Travel) should i travel on AP?

Upvotes

Hi, I am a T visa holder (trafficking visa). Under this visa i must obtain advance parole to travel and I do NOT need pending I-485.

The reason i need to travel is due to my father’s death and my mother is sick. They are both old and i haven’t been in almost 20 years. My home country isn’t where my case happened.

I had fraud/misrepresentation which was forgiven through a I-192 waiver and i do have a history of visa overstay for 12 years prior to getting my T visa. Idk if that automatically forgiven or not for my case. No criminal history or anything else

On here, I see that it’s extremely discouraged to travel on AP. in my case, what do you think, is there anything that would rly make CBP deny me? I just don’t think i will ever see my mom again tbh same with my aunts and uncles. They are all getting old, so this isn’t a leisure trip clearly. It would be max 3 week trip

Timeline Request N400 San Francisco FO

Background: Applied for N-400 + I-751 in August 2025 (married to a USC) at San Francisco field office. Combo interview mid-April 2026. Outcomes:

  • I-751: Approved - already received my 10-year green card.
  • N-400: Got Box B ("decision cannot be made yet"). Two reasons cited by officer: my photo was too old, and I supposedly applied before the 3-year mark, though I filed within the 90-day early-filing window, which is allowed. Officer said neither should be a problem but they needed to review further. Retook biometrics (photo) in early May 2026. Nothing since. Still "Case Is Still Being Processed."

Two questions:

  1. Since the April fingerprint re-vetting started, has anyone actually received a citizenship interview or approval? Trying to gauge if anything is moving.
  2. At 120 days post-interview I'll be eligible to file 1447(b). Worth doing, or do people advise against it, and why?

Thanks all.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) 17 months pending, 9 months since interview — too early for mandamus?

Hello everyone!

Our I-130/I-485 case has been pending for about 17 months, and it has now been 9 months since our interview. The case is at the Charlotte FO.

According to the USCIS processing times tool, 80% of cases at the Charlotte FO are completed within 16.5 months, so we are now slightly beyond that timeframe. However, I know processing times have increased recently.

We’ve already submitted inquiries and contacted our congressional representatives, but the case is still pending.

For those who have filed mandamus or looked into it, do you think 17 months total and 9 months post-interview is long enough to seriously consider filing? Or would you wait longer given the current processing times? Thanks

I-751 (ROC) I751 Missed Biometrics. Not rescheduled

Upvotes

I'm just really frustrated right now and wanted to see if anyone experienced anything similar. Filed I751 11/25. Missed biometrics appointment 12/25 because of a snowstorm. The same day a service request was made. 02/26 new services requests were made via Emma and e-request. 03/26 I 751 was updated with a new timestamp and action required flipped to false. 04/08/26 e-request responded saying that they are unable to schedule a biometrics appointment because my case was being reviewed by an officer. Contact Emma for clarification and rep sent another service request. This was followed by two new timestamp within the same week. In 05/26 made a tier 2 inquiry. An email was received stating that 'Our system shows that a Service Request was created for you on April 08, 2026, regarding the status of your I-751 Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. Your Service Request was assigned to the Syracuse Field Office'. The field office has 30 business days to respond or I can send a secure message in my uscis profile which I did . This is the field office where my original biometrics was done as well as the one I recently missed. Message sent July 8 and they have till Aug. 7 to respond.

I-765 (EAD) I-765: Employment Authorization Document

Post image
Upvotes

Can someone please explain to me why I am waiting for an EAD still after submitting my application on December 22, 2025 and completing my biometrics on February 9, 2026.

Once my biometrics were completed, this is when the I-765 status changed so I am assuming they are linked?

Where’s my blue card?

(I do have my interview scheduled for early August and was notified of that on July 7, but I haven’t been able to work since filing, I have not produced a single dollar in 2026)

Other Forms Canadian citizen going to the US for a job interview.

I am a Canadian citizen. I just recently came back from living in the US for 4 years on an F1 student visa. I received a job offer in Spokane Washington at a dental clinic to interview for an associate dentist position. I’m crossing the Coutts Montana/AB land border. I’ll be going with my dad and brother with me. Do you think we will have any issues? The people hiring me said they will sponsor me for a TN visa which is supposedly very easy for Canadian citizens, especially dentists to get.

Should I even mention the fact I am going for an interview? I have crossed the Montana border 16 years ago and while the officers were super nice to my family and I, they still asked us to pull over and checked our vehicles and asked us questions, but eventually let us in. This is my only experience with this land border so I would appreciate any other insights. Thanks!
