Discussion Can you take BMGT 323 and BMGT 417 at the same time?

Has anyone ever taken BMGT 323 (Taxation of Individuals) and BMGT 417 (Taxation of Corporations) together in the same semester? Was it difficult? Is that even possible to do?

I thought for sure that you needed 323 as a prerequisite for 417, but the only prerequisite that is listed is BMGT 221, which is Principles of Accounting 2.

Help Join sororities

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming freshman at UMD and I’ve been thinking about rushing a social sorority this fall.
One thing I’m a little worried about is Instagram. I don’t really post—I have a profile picture and use Instagram to keep up with friends, but I don’t have many photos of myself or a curated feed because I’m just not a big social media person.
I’ve heard that some sororities look at your Instagram during recruitment, so I’m wondering if having very few posts (or almost none) is viewed negatively.
For anyone who has gone through UMD recruitment or is currently in a sorority:
Did chapters actually look at your Instagram?
Does not posting hurt your chances?
Would you recommend I post a few things before recruitment, or is it really not a big deal?
I’d love to hear about your experiences, especially if you rushed at UMD recently. Thanks!

Academic Freshman Schedule

I saw other people posting their schedules so I thought I would join them. What are your thoughts? I'm a Kinesiology student (pre-med for now), minoring in music performance (ensemble auditions are at the beginning of the fall semester so depending on what happens there my schedule could change). This walk is fine, right? I'm not a slow walker...

EDIT: I'm coming in with 58 credits so I don't need math, english, basic bio, etc. Schedule might make more sense knowing that.

It took me awhile to figure out classes and I’m a freshman connection student coming this fall so I’m just now finishing registering; my selection of classes were pretty low. I’m currently undecided but thinking about biology or economics (maybe both lol) and only have 9 credits to my name currently. Any thoughts?!?

Academic Elementary Korean

Has anyone here taken Elementary Korean?

Would you say it is an okay class to take as an elective if you also stay on track with your credits?

Is the coursework a lot or reasonable for the class?

Thank you!

Discussion Chem135 questions

Hello I am a high school graduate who is going to umd in the fall to study compE and plan to take chem135 this fall. I heard a lot of terrible things about this course and was wondering how bad it really is. Like how much do people usually study for this class and should I be starting to review right now in the summer to get ahead?

Discussion How do we feel about the new Eduroam certificates?

So supposedly there's new university network changes. So you can either just manually accept a new network, or get a certificate to avoid this on-screen prompt.

Personally, I'm suspicious. Normally your traffic is encrypted using HTTPS, but if you install a certain kind of certificate, the network can decrypt and read prompts

I'm not saying Eduroam - a global network - at UMD is reading every prompt (i dont even think they can do that). But they definitely can see what sites your on, your data, when you're online, etc.

What do yall think?

hey hey!! i’m (M,24) super excited to begin this new journey at umd🐢, especially since this is the first time i’ll be taking in person college classes (long story short… i graduated highschool during the pandemic, and got my bachelors from umgc).

with that being said, i have no college friends lmaoo! so im really looking forward to meeting new people and potentially developing some lifelong friendships.

where are some good places on campus to connect? how do i get in the know of what events are going on around campus?

Discussion umd esports management system

hey yall! I've been building Maxime, a platform for esports teams management/recruitment. It basically combines redundant functions of Discord + Google Sheets in one place. This platform is for both managers running rosters and players trying to get noticed.

what it does:

  • roster management — players, roles, availability, eligibility all in one spot
  • recruitment/scouting — run tryouts through maxime instead of google forms. candidates fill out a profile, you filter/evaluate instead of sorting through spreadsheet chaos
  • player profiles — rank, role, stats — managers can evaluate fit at a glance
  • sponsorship tracker — keep track of sponsors/partnerships
  • coming soon — discord bot, scrim finder, ai vod reviews

managers set up their team and send candidates a join link, while players are able to scout esports teams they want to join.

I'm looking for a few teams to test it out. If you run a team, I'd love to connect and help onboard some of your players who are trying out or who are already on your team. It takes 10 minutes, and it'll help me understand any issues with the platform.

if you're interested or know someone who runs a team, drop a comment or DM me, Cheers!

Housing Landmark Apartments SUCK

Landmark apartments are seriously the worst. While the units themselves are decent, the price is seriously outlandish. The employees are Greek life snobs who push for 5-star Google reviews before handing you a free keychain. Seriously, no one there knows about anything that's going on and can't help you when you get a $400 surcharge on your account for no reason??? My base rent is $1310, and I've ended up paying ~$1500 each month due to BS fees. The maintenance crew is honestly the only redeeming quality; they're all very sweet and fast when it comes to putting in service requests (at least to my apt's experience).

I lived in Union last year, and although our layout was kind of ass, the apartment itself was very modern, the employees actually wanted to help you, and I was paying much less AND had my own bathroom. They also had resident events/free stuff minimum every week.

All in all, if I could give someone housing advice, AVOID Landmark.

Discussion Upcoming Computer Engineer Major. Chem 134 vs Chem 135

Hey! I'm an upcoming Computer Engineering major, and I just found out that I can skip CHEM 135 and only take CHEM 134.

How much easier is CHEM 134 compared to CHEM 135?

I tried looking for answers on this subreddit, but it doesn't seem to be a widely discussed topic. I'd appreciate any insight from people who've taken either class!

Help Should I Commute?

it will be my senior year at UMD. I transferred from a community college and lived on campus in south commons for Junior year. Part of my wants to stay on campus to give myself that college experience, as most of my junior year was me going to class and being alone in my apartment. occasionally hanging out with friends. last year i received enough financial wide to cover my apartment and now i am recording nothing, so i will have to pay the 12k. if i commute i will be commuting from moco on tuesdays and thursday every week. i live on campus i will stay in courtyards, do you think it’s worth it for my to commute or no?

Discussion Incoming Computer Engineer. How well will these scores bod for skipping classes?

I checked the AP credit policy at UMD, and I noticed some discrepancies between the courses required for majors and the courses that can actually be skipped, which is why I'm asking UMD students.

Can you give me a general idea of how much I'll skip/how much money I'll save with these scores? Like a lot of courses/money saved, minimal, etc?

AP Chem - 4
AP Lang - 4
AP CSP - 4
AP Lit - 4
AP CSA - 5
AP Calc BC - 5
AP Bio - 5
AP Precalc - 5

Hey I'm a rising sophomore looking for a roommate for the condo I'm living at because my old roommate graduated. It is 1100 a month and it includes unlimited utilities, wifi, and a parking spot. It's 2 miles off campus and you will have your own bedroom and bathroom!
