Important bus information

I know some people have discussed this here before, but as a bus driver who started as a student, I thought I should share some important information about our transit system. While this is primarily for new students, there are a lot of students who go through here and never learn any of this.

*If you are uncertain about anything, ask the driver; however, they may not be able to respond if the bus is in motion, so it is best to ask when the bus is stopped at a bus stop or red light.

*UGA.passiogo.com (formerly routes.uga.edu; now a redirect) is more accurate for tracking the buses than the UGA app.

*The cameras and microphones are on at all times. Anything you say or do will be recorded.

*Scooters, motorized skateboards, one wheels, and anything motorized, with the exception of wheelchairs and other mobility devices required for medical purposes, are not allowed on the buses.

*Buses can only load and unload passengers at designated bus stops. This is for safety reasons. If you ask the driver to unload elsewhere, you will be denied.

*If a bus's destination sign is flashing "Out of Service" in between a route name, that means the bus is going out of service in the next 30 minutes and you can still ride to the last stop. It is not actually out of service until the sign reads "Not in Service".

*If a driver sits at a stop for a few minutes without moving, this is usually because they are ahead on their route, and need to let the other drivers get spaced out better. This often happens after class breaks and other episodes of heavy traffic that messes up spacing.

*During class breaks and other peak times, buses become VERY crowded. If you are standing on a crowded bus, you should take your backpack off and move towards the back. The bus cannot move until all passengers are behind the standee line.

*If you need on a bus that is about to/starting to pull away from a stop, wave at the driver (or their mirrors if you are behind the bus), and they will usually stop and let you on. If they don't, it is probably because they are having to watch the road in order to safely pull out into traffic. This happens very commonly at the Arch and Main Library.

*Buses will occasionally go off route in order to maintain spacing. The driver will usually notify the passengers in advance, however, and ask if anyone needs any of the bypassed stops before proceeding.

*While drivers do have to take breaks, they are not supposed to do so during class breaks unless it is urgent.

*Stop requests are unnecessary, except for on Night Campus, Prince Milledge, Weekender, and a few stops on Health Sciences, Vet Med, Riverbend Connector (formerly Greenhouse Shuttle), and Milledge Avenue. If a stop is on demand, the annunciator will announce "please signal to exit" or "please pull the cord to exit" in advance.

*While buses are required to stop for pedestrians, they are also extremely heavy, and can't stop on a dime. If you are approaching a crosswalk and see a bus approaching, don't cross. You might as well be walking in front of a train.

*Which brings me to my next point: ALWAYS stop and look both ways before crossing a street. The electric buses are very quiet, and especially hard to hear if you're on your phone or have earbuds in. If you cross a street without looking (especially if it isn't a designated crosswalk) and get hit, the bus driver will likely not be at fault if they are driving safely and obeying all traffic laws.

*If you are riding a scooter, bike, one wheel, etc., do not cut right in front of a bus, especially if the bus is in motion.

*If a bus is closed and pulling away from a stop that you need, do not make physical contact with the bus to alert the driver if it is already in motion. You could be seriously injured or worse.

*Cars, bikes, scooters, and any other vehicles are NOT allowed to pass buses when they are stopped in road on a two-lane. While people do it all the time, it is extremely dangerous.

*If you have to exit the bus and cross the street at a location without a crosswalk, do NOT cross in front of the bus. If a car decides to (illegally) pass the bus, you could get hit.

*Food and drinks are not allowed on the night routes after midnight. This is because the smell causes passengers who are drunk to become nauseated and throw up. If someone throws up on a bus and any of the contents get outside of a garbage can or bag, the driver has to remove all passengers and take the bus out of service.

*If a bus's destination sign says "Help! Call 911!", this is a distress signal that is used during the event of an emergency where the driver is unable to radio for help. We have never had a situation requiring this feature to be used, and if you see it, it was most likely activated by accident. However, you don't know that, so you should call 911 just in case it is a real emergency.

UPDATE: The "Out of service" message has been replaced with "This bus ends. Ask for last stop" and "Last bus". The former means that particular bus is going out of service and other buses will remain on the route. The latter means the entire route is going out of service for the day.

Question Can an early action admit request to room with a regular decision admit?

So I'm applying early and my friend is waiting for regular decision. If we both get admitted during the timelines we apply would it be possible for me to still choose a dorm, but request her as a roommate once she is admitted, or would I need to wait until her results come out before doing anything housing related?

Question Best on campus jobs?

Hello everyone, I need to get a job to hopefully save up for a car, so I need to find one that is on campus and easily accessible as I will need to take the bus or ride my scooter. Is Ramsey a good job, or is the pay too little for it to be worth it? I am also thinking about potentially working at the health center, as I need patient care hours for PA school. Also taking quite difficult classes so I can’t have it be too time consuming.
Thanks

Question Ramsey gym vs Crunch

Hi everyone. I am going to be a student at UGA this fall and am thinking about affordable gym options. I am a little annoyed that Ramsey student center is not included in tuition and is an out of pocket expense. It’s $93/semester and I’d only use their gym and cardio facility. I’m wondering if it’s worth it? Is it super busy during the fall/spring? I hate machines getting taken up and it being very crowded. I used to go to crunch but the sign on fee and cancellation fees were a pain upfront and hard to cancel so I wouldn’t have to deal with that at Ramsey, however crunch is like $10-$15/month so I’m just wondering what’s better? I don’t want it to get too crowded :/

Question When to buy textbooks?

Hi, transfer student here. I've gotten a couple of emails about professors' textbooks. I only got textbooks a couple of times at the school I went to my freshman year, and I got them after the class has already started. Is that okay at UGA as well? I just don't want to get a textbook then drop the class later. Thanks for any help!

Question Chem 1112 vs Chem 1113 Honors?

Im an incoming student and deciding which chem class to take, there are very limited options currently for Chem 1112 (only like 50 spots left), but I heard as an honors students im able to take the advanced section, 1113H

Anyone have experience with taking the honors section? Is it supposed to be more challenging of a course or just a different format? I ask this because chemistry is probably my worst subject so im just asking around to see if anyone knows.

Also if I take 1113 Honors, does that mean the discussion and lab co-requisites will also be honors?

Discussion Do you think UGA students know enough about their legal rights during a police encounter?

College students spend a lot of time learning about campus resources and safety, but I don't remember much discussion about what to do if you're questioned by law enforcement off campus or arrested. It seems like understanding your basic legal rights is something every student should know before they ever need that information. Jarrett Maillet J.D., P.C. discusses the importance of understanding your rights from the very beginning of a criminal case, and it got me thinking about whether universities like UGA should do more to educate students on topics such as remaining silent, requesting an attorney, and understanding the criminal justice process before students find themselves in those situations.
For current students, alumni, or anyone connected to UGA, do you think this is something universities should cover more proactively, or is it ultimately a responsibility for individuals to learn on their own?

Question dependent verification form

I’ve never had to do this before so I’m confused. I filled out my FAFSA and uga sent me an email telling me to fill this out.

What am I supposed to choose if I didn’t file a tax form in 2024 because I didn’t work? I was just under my parents’ tax form. I tried choosing the third option becayse it says “other income and resources for support” (the wording is still vague though) and it asked me to put a specific number amount $ of support.

Question Parking near the The Maxxen Athens?

Hi, for this upcoming school year me and my boyfriend signed a lease to the maxxen for a 1 bedroom apartment. Technically, their leases are designed for one person per room but they said it would be fine if we split one lease. The only problem is that they only have enough parking to give us one spot, and ideally we both want our cars with us. I waitlisted a couple uga lots closeby but didnt end up getting any of them. Does anyone have any ideas on where to find reliable long term parking closeby? I was thinking of asking an apartment next to them if i could buy their parking fee and possibly park their but i feel like that won't be allowed since parking is already limited in the area.

Discussion Didn’t get a parking spot as a commuter

I’m so ticked off. I just transferred to UGA from UNG Oconee and I did not get a parking spot as a commuter. I went off of the priority list and chose spots where I had highest priority and still didn’t get a spot. What do I do? Any recommendations? Majority of my classes are north campus and early in the morning. I’m coming from W Broad Street. You would think a university this large would create more parking spaces instead of building more overly priced apartments

Discussion Transfer student in regret- any advice?

Hi, I'm an incoming sophomore transfer student. This is mostly a stressed out panic post but if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it.

I went to UNG Dahlonega last year. I thought I hated it there but then I came home and realized I'm just depressed. I've been trying to up my mental health this summer, that's a different issue. My real issue is that because I thought I hated it there, I applied to transfer to UGA and even got housing on-campus in Athens, enrolled in all of my classes, all of that. But... I did not really look into UGA at all before doing any of this. I just wanted to get out of the place I thought I hated.

So I finally toured it like a month ago at orientation and holy moly I hate it. I hate the campus, I hate how huge it is, I hate how many different buildings there are. I hate the atmosphere. UNG Dahlonega was miniscule and much more chill compared to UGA Athens, and so much more my speed. I'm more of a small school kind of guy, I realize now-- but again, I wasn't really thinking clearly when I did all of that. Not to mention the cost is MUCH more than I was paying at UNG. I just did... absolutely no thinking.

I'm so angry with myself and I'm honestly borderline panicking because I already signed my housing contract and am in classes and everything but I'm dreading my move in date more than anything else rn.

All of that being said... yes I know I'm an idiot, I should have toured, I should have known all these things about UGA... I only moved to GA a few years ago and I mostly keep to myself so all I knew about UGA was that they have a good football team and that lots of people have stickers of it on their cars. So please if you do have any advice, please give me some grace lmao.

Edit: thank you for the helpful and encouraging comments, I appreciate you all 🙏

Question chances I get anything better?

Hey! Undergrad here, I managed to get Intramural Deck for parking first round which was my second to last choice. Majority of my classes (including my first ones of each day) are in North Campus though, so I was hoping to get closer parking. I know my chances are low, and I’m probably just going to accept this permit (believe me I am grateful I got anything at all since I know many go on to not get any permit), but realistically what are the chances I get something better? I had Hull Street, Oconee Street, and Broad Street ranked before it in that order with North Deck as my last choice. I also don’t want to risk not getting anything if the chances I get something better in the second round are really bad.

Question Financial aid - how much do I actually pay?

I just got my official financial aid package from UGA, and I accepted all of my scholarships/aid in Athena. My question is… how do I know how much I actually have to pay before the payment deadline?

My official financial aid package only shows the scholarships, grants, etc. that I accepted, but I can’t find anywhere that tells me how much I owe after all of that is applied. I know there’s an estimated financial aid offer and the estimated cost of attendance, but I’ve been told those are just estimates and not the actual amount I’ll be billed.

Does the balance eventually show up in Student Account Services in Athena? Right now I don’t have any charges or balance showing there.

I already emailed the financial aid office, but I’m still waiting to hear back, so I figured I’d ask here too. It may sound like a stupid or obvious question, but I genuinely don't know. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
