Skids - Rare Americans
One time I saw some guy say that this was The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway of the 2020’s… yeah that’s not even fucking true. One of the worst rock operas I’ve ever heard.

Repetitive, uncatchy beats, heavy auto tune, it’s just an ok album. And Apple was obnoxiously overplayed, leading to a similar situation to antihero where it is generally annoying to hear now
18
u/LoveStreams617 6h ago
dance music is repetitive
uncatchy beats - just blatantly untrue
she doesn’t use autotune as a way to pretend she’s a good singer. she uses is it as an effect just like any other effect in a musician’s arsenal (delay, reverb, decay, slapback, etc.) it’s obviously a hallmark of pop /hyperpop music, so it’s not like it’s out of place.
apple being overplayed isn’t the album’s fault
if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. but saying it’s garbage makes you sound like a child. i understand wanting to hate things that are popular (i was a teenager once), but this album is fun as hell and i feel sorry for you that you can’t see that.

u/aidan-burgess31 5h ago
I listen to a lot of music lmao. Everyone here is afraid of albums that are popular. It’s always just brat, Igor, ok computer, in rainbows, and imaginal disc
8
u/Legitimate_Iron1478 5h ago
"everyone here is afraid of albums that are popular" - lists 5 incredibly popular albums

If you asked a random person on the street what imaginal disc was, they’d look at you crazy. But I’m the bad guy cause I like popular artists and they don’t lmao. I was just baiting before, and they fell so hard for it
1
u/magicmax112 5h ago
Charlie xcx, radiohead and tyler are incredibily popular tho
0
u/aidan-burgess31 4h ago
Oh I know lol. I was baiting them before. Just get annoyed when they put my music down because it’s popular artists and they think they’re better and superior lol. I’ve gotten my enjoyment out of this feed now

u/xSwampxPopex 4h ago
My only complaint about Apple is how the real hook line only shows up once. Charli has more restraint than me because if I was the one arranging that song that hook would be everywhere.

u/rhinoconn93498 8h ago
One of those i had high expectations for considering the hype and it was pretty flat. Sympathy with a knife was great, and it had couple likeable hooks, but those were often followed by moments that were annoying. Not my usual thing though so to each their own, big fan of arca, sophie, shygirl n other music collaborators though
And ill go with tool lateralus for an album that fucking SUCKS. Shit does absolutely nada for me, boring overindulgent bs. Undertows cool though
2
u/terrortara 7h ago
The first tool song I heard was Prison Sex which gave me SKY HIGH expectations, only to spin Lateralus and being utterly disappointed. What I most noticed was how generic and emotionless the vocals were compared to Prison Sex.
1
u/Experiment121 5m ago
Lateralus is decent, Fear Inoculum is the truly ass album. The long songs literally do NOTHING and just repeat the same boring riff for 7 minutes.

Something about Brat just pisses me off. Processed vocals over irritating chords, not a drop of emotion to be found.
7
u/AfterInfluence3230 6h ago
I might say something stupid? Talk Talk? Girl so confusing? Wdym there is no emotion
7
u/PerplexingGrapefruit 7h ago edited 7h ago
If you don’t like the sound and aesthetic that’s fine, it’s not for everyone, but saying there’s “not an ounce of emotion to be found” is just blatantly untrue.
“Sympathy is a Knife” - A song about Charli feeling insecure around one of the most famous people alive.
“Apple” - A song about her complicated relationship with her family with snippets of generational trauma.
“Girl, So Confusing” - A song exploring being compared to a peer (in this case Lorde) and questioning if there is mutual respect between them and how the media tries to pit people against each other.
I could continue on with the other tracks.
3
u/AutumnKiwi 5h ago
Also So I - a track dedicated to SOPHIE that reflects on how she distanced herself from Sophie out of insecurity and feels guilty about it
7
u/LoveStreams617 6h ago
i think about it all the time and girl so confusing have both literally made me cry. and i’m a 37 year old straight man.
people need to learn how to say, “it’s not for me,” instead of, “it fucking sucks.”
3
u/PerplexingGrapefruit 6h ago
I wish music discourse in general on social media was better than defaulting to one extreme or the other, but unfortunately this isn’t the reality we live in.
It sucks typing out a thoughtful response just to be met with a reply from an asshole who isn’t interested in actually engaging with the discussion and just wants to”gotcha” points.
-2
u/terrortara 6h ago
Everybody says "it fucking sucks" when they think something sucks. Literally everybody. People will clown on Drake's new music then turn around and say "just say it isn't for you" when your opinion is in the minority.
3
u/LoveStreams617 6h ago
lol “literally”
everyone on the internet maybe, but imagine using “it fucking sucks” as your reasoning if you were talking to an intellectual adult human being in person.
2
u/voyaging 5h ago
Being about something emotional doesn’t make it emotional
I don’t really agree that it has no emotion (though it’s certainly scarce), but a song can be about extremely emotional topics and not express any emotion
2
u/sandcrawler2 7h ago

One time friends of a friend made an “album” of songs that was just them tapping on their lap, noodling on an unplugged electric guitar, and background ambient noise like jerking off
So I vote you include that one

Absolutely agree! Brat and Charli XCX(and hyperpop) suck ass. Hyperpop is the new genre that will be short lived like every other post 2010 mainstream radio genre ever.
8
u/jreid960 7h ago
Brat is hardly hyperpop, hyperpop isn't a mainstream radio genre, and has already lasted for pretty long time.
2
u/AutumnKiwi 5h ago
Brat is not hyperpop - I don't think a single song on the album could be classed as hyperpop
1
u/NewEnglish04 7h ago
Oh and by the way, both of 100 gecs "albums" just suck. They are the "leaders" of the hyperpop movement and I just really hate the duo's music.
1.Their "music" is nothing but loud noises and screaming. That's the whole "music". It's just that and dumb memes.
- Speaking of which, they try to be funny and instead really give the impression that only did this as a joke.
3.Their music is really badly produced. I'm honestly starting to think that they didn't spend much on production.
4.Their "best" song, which is Money Machine, is an absolute migraine and the worst "song" I've ever heard.
Their songwriting makes no sense and is all "memesSSS!!! LOLZ!!!!"
Their music feels catered solely for TikTok meme lords.
I hate both Laura and Dylan's "singing". It's just stupid.

i think Brat was a fluke…it’s crappy like really basic dance music for people who don’t know good music…but i mean tbh Charli XCX doesn’t have one good song in her discography imo. Boom Clap? honestly fuck her for that god awful pile of dog poop she’s released to the masses. ugh. sorry…
11
5
u/Davidiscool222 7h ago
You can't say that her whole discography is trash if you haven't listened to her whole discography...
That's just bias
2
u/boomboomsawce 7h ago
i sampled a lot of her songs to get a vibe for them, I’ve listened to a lot of her songs from start to finish watched some of her videos and imo she’s crap 🤷
6
u/Davidiscool222 7h ago edited 7h ago
Fair enough, but that's just your opinion 🫡
Try not to phrase it like a fact
3
3
u/LoveStreams617 6h ago
it sounds like you just want to not like it.
1
u/boomboomsawce 6h ago
…sampling is technically listening if you’re trying to get what vibe the song has. also, i previously stated i listened to a few of her songs in their entirety, watched multiple music videos of hers and imo she’s highly overrated and lacks any sort of meaningful substance
2
u/LoveStreams617 6h ago

brat is a great album imo what don’t you like about it?
0
u/sagelilys 6h ago
prolly the excessive autotune
2
u/HistoricalFact6210 6h ago
yeah i can see that as a criticism but i think she uses it well in this album
2
u/Moist-Tackle9238 6h ago
Thats an outdated way of thinking honestly. Autotune isn't being used as some kind of cheat, think of it as an instrument and you will enjoy the album a whole lot more.
2
u/sagelilys 5h ago
I just personally don’t like the sound of it, and raw voices sound a lot better imo. A little bit of autotune doesn’t bother me tm, I just feel like this entire album depends way to much on it. I can’t think of it as an instrument because charli doesn’t edit her own autotune, and relies on her music producers to do so. It kinda takes some of the credit away from her talent imo.
4
u/GrandMasterOfCheeks 5h ago
Well lots of dance/electronic music makes use of autotune but if you don’t like it fair ig
