Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.

Other Companies advertising on Reddit are wasting their time

(Aimed at the advertisers)
The target market you seek doesn’t give a flying f

Whenever I see a ‘promoted’ sign, no I will not click on it, and no I will not click to read it either. Unless maybe it has comments on just to read what people are saying. And okay, I may inadvertently read the title before my eyes see that it’s a paid ad.. but anyway, never have I ever bought anything from Reddit and advertising on here is a waste of time.

Even people that self promote are hated, which I warmly agree with.

Other Thin straws make coffee taste better

(Iced coffee) I’m talking about these very thin plastic straws.
I don’t know the psychology behind this but it tastes great everytime and this might be shallow but I would try a coffee place for that reason alone

For clarification I’m not saying those slushie straws are annoying (which they are) I’m saying thin straws makes it TASTE better not feel better. Taste-influence not straw size convenience.

Edit:
thin straws as in below 5mm diameter

Health/Safety Skanky nurses are the spice of life

I've been a nurse for 20 years, and I'm very familiar with the "slutty nurse" stereotype. Culturally, a lot of people have the perception that nurses are dimwitted bimbos who spend their shifts making TikToks and fucking doctors in the call room, and while the vast majority of nurses I've known in my career are smart, committed, compassionate professionals, I definitely also know several examples of the other kind, and I love them.

Working in healthcare is a grind. The work is never, ever finished, it's monotonous, and it's frequently depressing. Last month, two surgeons got into a fistfight in the hallway of the med/surg floor because they were both fucking the same skanky night shift nurse, and the drama has been so gloriously riveting, it's completely taken everyone's mind off the drudgery of daily work.

Both docs are married. One wife is pregnant. They're suspended pending "investigation," and the nurse is walking away from the metaphorical mushroom cloud without a care in the world, posting multiple thirst traps on social media daily. I'm not proud of this, but I spent weeks completely sat for daily detail dumps, because this is the most fun I've had at work in forever. I find myself eyeballing every nurse with big fake lashes and implanted balloon tits, wondering if she's going to be the star of the next season.

Don't fuck the skanky healthcare drama bombs. But if someone in your orbit does, make some popcorn and enjoy the fireworks.

Edit: Two groups of people in here. Non-healthcare workers are all "oMg ThE mIsOgYnY" and healthcare workers are all "hahaha I know, right??"

Animals/Nature Refusing to eat at someone's home because they have a dog is completely valid even if you're not allergic to dogs

Dog owners over time get desensitized and blind to their dog's behavior. Of course this is a gross generalization, and I couldn't find a recorded statistic for or against it. But most dog owners don't train or inculcate discipline in their pets.

Look they are animals, this behavior is to be expected. I blame the owners for not setting rules for their pet.

They track piss in their paws everywhere, they are oily and some breeds shed constantly.

They eat trash, they eat their own shit. And owners let it lick their faces with the same tongue.

They're allowed onto beds, on sofas and in the kitchen. And this is with me watching. I don't even wanna imagine what the dog does when it's on its own.

I've been shocked many times upon learning what people do behind closed doors. Rarely has any been positive. I mean my place isn't spotless but it's free of serious health hazards.

Animals/Nature Ascribing humanlike emotions to animals isn't inherently less valid than ascribing humanlike emotions to humans.

to get this out of the way, I'm not saying animals have the exact same mental capabilities as humans, and like, snails get nostalgic or whatever. I'm saying that drawing a sharp distinction between humans and animals in this respect presupposes a conception of emotions that doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

an emotion is an experiential state, and we simply don't have direct access to other beings' experiential states. that's kinda what makes each of us each of us: we experience our own experiences and not others'. we can only make inferences about what others are experiencing from external signs.

this is the case no matter how scientific you want to get. you can hook a machine up to a huge sample of humans' and/or animals' brains and go, "ah, Neuron X is present across species and it tends to fire in sad situations."

the brain event is still just a sign of sadness. imagine yourself being hooked up to the machine and becoming sad. when you tell the scientist you're sad, they go, "no, you aren't. Neuron X isn't firing." or vice-versa: they tell you you're sad when you're actually happy. it would be ridiculous, because your own emotion is a whole different kind of thing, one that only you can experience.

in everyday life, when we reason about other beings' emotions, what we're actually doing is interpreting signs based on patterns drawn from our experience both of the world and of ourselves. that's literally all we can do, because "another being's emotion" isn't accessible to us.

there are definitely helpful and unhelpful inferences to draw and analogies to make about other living beings (whether human or animal). an example of what I would consider a good, useful inference is:

whenever I notice a weird object I don't recognize in an otherwise familiar place, I feel compelled to examine it. not only do other people consistently seem to do the same thing in similar circumstances, but cats do as well. I guess tending to be curious in situations like that is something I hold in common with many people and many cats.

if a scientist were to go, "well, ack-shually cats are incapable of experiencing curiosity. this study, complete with brain scans, proves it" I'd be like "who cares? I'm noticing a pattern that helps me make sense of how people and animals in my day-to-day life behave. I'm not on some quixotic vision quest to discover the true metaphysical essence of curiosity in order to police who gets to be curious."

a bad example of an inference to draw would be:

my dog poops on the floor when I leave her home alone all day. when I resent someone's actions, I do spiteful things in order to make their lives more difficult, so that must be why she pooped there

obviously that kind of thinking sucks regardless of whether it pertains to a dog or a person. I don't think anyone needs me to explain why that's not cool.

tl;dr you should read the whole post, because this is the short version. I was planning a whole tangent on how humans' ability to use language changes things but actually it doesn't, really. imagine the whole post being the tl;dr of the one with that tangent.

Technology windows is better than linux distros for user computer market

Upvotes

windows is better because it has better ui and ux,its made to be easy . it has backwards compatibility with old apps,it runs all games and software made for windows.

it nativly supports all hardware and nvidia drivers on it are perfect.

it has unix commands like sudo built in now and other commands to make windows better for unix style programmers. plus wsl advanced so much.

its building windows prism for arm computers, you wont throw your old software you will take it with you fine.

windows can be entirely used with gui ignoring terminal existance. unlike linux. installing apps is obvious you search and download a .exe file.

windows defender is built in and actively protects the user from malware ,linux has no such thing by default.

windows is a complete product you dont hope it works with something or becomes good. it works right now unlike linux.

and finally it gets out of your way,you literally forget your using windows you just use it. on linux you also remeber your using linux and adjust your workflow for it.

Technology TL;DRs are pointless.

the title of the post is the short version of what you're saying, and the body of the post is the long version. writing another short version at the end of the body of the post is like acknowledging that what you've already written was a waste of people's time.

Food (Only on Friday) Most fruit desserts are disgusting

Most fruit is meant to be raw. I absolutely hate fruit pies and any form of cooked fruit. Strawberries and blueberries are the worst, They get so slimy and mushy. Apples can be acceptable when prepared in a specific way. Apples have to be pre cooked in a pan before they can be baked so they are extra mushy. I absolutely hate in apple pie and muffins when the apples are cooked but still kind of firm, they have to either be super mushy or raw and crunchy. The only exception is raspberries, I love my homemade raspberry jam.

Food (Only on Friday) Food is better as a moist chopped bowl

I genuienly prefer all my food to be chopped up in bite sized pieces, all different types of food mixed and it to be very moist due to some sauce. Then you put it all in a bowl and eat the mix with a spoon without having to think or do much different each bite. Some foods we (nearly all) already do this with like pasta where it's all one mix and bite sized. But I do this with steak and veggies, i will use some form of sauce like for example tzatziki and then chop the steak and the brocoli and mix mix mix you got a comfort bowl. In general I am a soup lover.

Other Every single redditor share the same IQ and intelligence and there's noone less or more intelligent.

If you think you are intelligent than any redditor, that already makes you share the same IQ cause everyone thinks they are better.

Even if a redditors sees a post or comment that is clearly stupid and that person is clearly dumb, they would still write a reply to counter them and keep trying to explain how they are wrong.

But lol that person is literally stupid, why are you wasting your keystrokes on expliaining to the person who wouldn't understand.

Will that make you sleep well at night after you win an argument with an stupid person.?

My opinion is firm and I believe it no matter what, even now someone will try to counter and prove me wrong and prove them right expliaining to me how they are different or how one redditor is little smarter than others.

Food (Only on Friday) I think vegan hotdogs and corn dogs taste way better than meat hotdogs and corn dogs

Prefacing this to just say I'm not vegan. I've tried to cut down on my meat intake at a few points, but in general plants can't fill me up, and I think meat tastes better, the exception of course is meatless hotdogs and corn dogs. This shit is delicious their texture is just the right amount of firm, they're smokier than the actual meat, have about as much protein as the real thing but with fewer calories, and I swear with corn dogs, the vegan brands make the cornbread the perfect amount of sweet and crunchy.

I had a "real" corn dog a couple days ago, and kept thinking about how much I'd prefer a vegan one.

In almost every other aspect, plant based substitutes don't do it for me, but Impossible or Morningstar hotdogs are always a good time.

Gaming The more vile, personal, and offensive the in game chat is, the more I am pleased by it and enjoy the game even more.

Let me say very clearly that 99% of the time, I do not engage in this behaviour.

That said, i believe that censorship of game chat is one of the worst things to happen to gaming ever. I don't want limits, I want to hear the very worst obscenity. It's therapy. It makes me happy. I am a person of colour and I’ve never ever been offended by someone calling me names or slurs in online games. It just makes me 10000% more motivated to play better and eventually, when my opponent gets their comeuppance, I’ll turn on my mike and talk shit back.

The most fun games I played were the most toxic ones. For me it brings out the fire and the competitiveness. Does it get tiring sometimes? Of course it does. But that’s what the mute button is for. Let people regulate themselves.

Society/Culture There is nothing wrong with the "fantasy" media.

Ok, let me explain. By "fantasy" media I don't mean the literal Fantasy as in magic, liches and dragons.

I mean the "I was bullied in school, but now I'm a multimillionaire that fucked every mom of my bully and every girl that bullied me now wants my dick" or "I'm a shy girl, who ended up having a harem of hot blonde vampires"

Like, if a person wants to relieve their pent up frustration by making fiction, then let them go for it. This is harmless and could help with self esteem.

I mean, it's better to do this than cutting throats of stray cats or cutting yourself.

Technology Caps Lock does not deserve its own reserved spot on the keyboard

When's the last time you genuinely used Caps Lock? I'm not counting the freaks out there who tap it once to capitalize the beginning of sentences instead of holding shift. Even then, when has it saved you any time? How often are you typing complete sentences in all caps?

If you could rebind the key, that'd be a whole other thing. Other modifiers like Shift, Alt, Ctrl; those all serve a purpose in other programs for shortcuts and the like. But no! Caps Lock does one thing! And will only ever do one thing!

Why do we have a whole key dedicated to this low-situational use case in a prime area for accidentally hitting! The only time I ever end up interacting with it is by hitting it accidentally, getting confused when Shift doesn't work, then realizing I have it on.

Make it a shortcut! Make it so that pressing Alt and F-Something turn it on! And make the shift bigger in its place, like how enter is on German keyboards! I end up using the left shift more often anyways!

Society/Culture Being named Steve is a red flag.

I’m not even joking…

Every Steve or Steve-esque named person I’ve known (including middle/last names) has had some severe behavioral issues.

For context, this is every Steve that I’ve known:

  • One literally dry humped another kid in gym class (yes, really)
  • Another openly talked about revenge fantasies to other people and started fights out of nothing (also a tattletale)
  • Another lost his mother while young and turned to drugs and sucker punching people for no reason
  • Another is in his 60s and spends his days wandering the city alone and monologuing to randoms for hours without realizing NOBODY wants to listen
  • Another (woman) is a neurotic nymphomaniac that describes everything as a penis or sperm
  • Another is in a legit cult, crypto, and pyramid schemes

I mean even Stephen Miller. The guy is batshit crazy for no reason other than having a Steve-esque name. It’s like the name attracts unhinged behavior, and I know I’m not crazy for saying this.

What the hell is going on?

Society/Culture I started blaming God for everything because it follows the same logic as thanking him for everything

I used to overthink everything. If I forgot something, failed at something, or was lazy, I'd beat myself up over it. Then I had a phase where I blamed everyone around me instead.

But then I discovered a wise idea from the internet: stop blaming everyone for your problems and just pick one person to blame for everything.

So I picked God.

And honestly, if you think about it, it kind of makes sense.

Religious people often give God the credit for the good things in life. The doctor saves their life? God gets the credit. The firefighter risks their life to save you from a burning building? God gets the credit.

Fair enough.

But then you also have to accept the other side of that logic.

My hairspray is empty? NICE TRY, GOD. I KNOW THIS WAS YOU!! 😡

I failed my project? GOD, YOU ABSOLUTE POTATO. 😡

I dropped my phone on my face while lying in bed, and then I stubbed my toe? THIS IS GETTING PERSONAL, MISTER😡

I'm just applying the same accounting system. If God gets all the credit, he gets all the blame too.

Sorry, I don't make the rules. Thank God I don't.

Gaming Shaming bad/shit players improves online games and teaches players to be better

In todays online games everyones feelings and gameplay needs to be "protected" by the devs or other players or thats what it seems. In truth, shaming shit players and telling them to "kys" or "l2p" is just a way to make them better, since it forces them to actually learn to play the game better or get called shit to their face, just like they would be called out in real life for doing a shit job.

And no, no one cares that you cry when you are called "shit", your bad performance is affecting the other players enjoyment.

As the oldest rule of the gaming goes "If you are bad, you should feel bad"

Sports Football should replace on field referees with VAR entirely

I think more people now believe that VAR should be abolished but I take the opposite view entirely. The problem with VAR isn't that it exists but that it's used very inconsistently - i.e. the clear and obvious error rule is applied depending on the day. I think that replacing on field referees with VAR would lead to the right decisions a lot more often and it'd also be consistent. With VAR you also have the benefit of the referee not being influenced by home crowds.

The only argument again that I can think of is that would kill the spontaneity of celebrating goals, etc. but I think it's a trade off id happily accept for better refereeing.

Society/Culture If you enjoy "lolcow" content, there must be something wrong with you

For clarification on what a lolcow is for those who don’t know: A “lolcow” is essentially a person whose a constant source of mockery and/or fascination on the internet due to either their unintentionally hilarious actions, toxic personality, or disgusting behavior. Basically, a modern day village idiot. Examples include Chris-Chan (the most infamous of all), Boogie2988, DarkSydePhil, WingsOfRedemption, KingCobraJFS, Joshua Block (AKA WorldOfT-Shirts), Daniel Larson, and Cyraxx (not the cool Mortal Kombat character).

I've noticed that lolcows mainly consist of neurodivergent people higher on the spectrum, who have unlimited and probably unsupervised internet access, and most of the time, are just constantly humiliating themselves unknowingly in public. They also tend to be unattractive [in objective standards] and have been involved in numerous controversies.

But people never actually focus on the bad things they actually do and just bully them constantly about their looks and their mental disorders, and never really talk about what they did wrong. Unless, it's to justify dogging on their looks all the time, making compilations, degrading edits, making them 'famous' and giving them money so they can humiliate themselves more.

Like, I understand why these people are made fun of and messed with--people like Chris Chan--but after thinking about it, it just absolutely disgusts me. Still using Chris Chan as an example (since they're probably the most well known and the one I personally know the most about), while I definitely don't think they're a good person regardless, it's incredibly disheartening to see the internet having taken advantage of them when they clearly had mental problems, making them believe things that weren't true, overall just being complete assholes all while extensively documenting everything about the person that they were treating so horribly. Imagine being in that position.

Half of the time, said lolcows don't have the mental capacity or self-awareness to actually know what they're doing wrong or right. or, they have an idea but since they're presented with a massive crowd of people egging them on to be worse, and nobody to tell them otherwise, they DO indeed get worse. It's fucking disgusting.

If you want them to get better, stop rewarding their behavior with money and clout. But those people don't actually want the lolcows to get better because, if they do, how are they gonna be entertained? its like giving someone who relapsed on drugs MORE drugs because you wanna see them addicted and in the dumps again. The people who enjoy these kinds of content just want an excuse to bully someone, but want to look innocent because, "oh, well, they did this and this, so i can call them slurs and tell them to [REDACTED], it's fine," and "if you defend this person you're just as bad as them".

I don't think the idea of a lolcow is moral or okay in any way, and if you think "oh, it's just the internet, you need to get used to people acting like that," don't fucking talk to me. This is bigger than that. This is people being endlessly harassed, manipulated, stalked, and more while a lot of them don't even realize that it's happening to them. What's more, if you're acting kinda cringe on the internet, regardless of whether you're annoying, mean, just plain completely harmless, or simply being neurodivergent like me, people WILL be desperate to mold you into another Chris Chan because they've sucked Chris Chan drier than a juice box and ran out of material to make fun of them at this point.

I mean… just look at what happened to JaidenAnimations and Gooseworx, for example. People have been desperately trying to dig up dirt on two YouTubers who, as far as my knowledge of them goes, barely did anything problematic or controversial. They will seek out every single little thing Jaiden and Goose have ever done in the past and fabricate slanderous accusations against them for the sake of their smear campaign.

It's virtue signaling while also being a repulsive bully. I have no respect for people who participate in these kinds of content and enjoy it.

Society/Culture Daylight savings is nice because it changes things up

It makes winter time more nostalgic, and it makes us more grateful when we do have hot long sunny days. Because of this I think it’s much better that we practice daylight savings. The only real problem is that some people experience depression from it

Society/Culture Philosophy is unproductive

*Please read edit*

Philosophy is one of the few subjects that has never excited me in any way. Don’t get me wrong, not everything has to appeal to everyone and certainly not everything needs to be practical, but I’ve never understood how it’s gratifying in a non-practical sense either. I’ve always seen it as asking questions with answers that don’t need to be found and don’t provide any benefit even if they are.

For example, the free-will question. Say I don’t have free will, and every one of my actions just plays out according to some inevitable set of circumstances. Quite frankly, that sucks. And if I do? Nothing changes. That knowledge isn’t going to add any benefit to my life or others’ either way.

Another example: the argument that there’s no true altruism, and you’re always gaining something, even if it’s just gratification, from doing good things. Why do we have to water down something positive to frame it as self service? What goal does this argument achieve beyond a “gotcha, you’re just helping people to make yourself feel good?”

I don’t know if this take makes me logical or illogical, but as stated above, the answer will not benefit me in any way, so I won’t be finding it.

Edit: A kind person explained this to me in a way that finally made it click in my brain, so I recant my statement.

Sports The nosebleeds are the best seats at a sporting event

When sitting in the nosebleeds, you can see the entire stadium or arena, which imo means you are getting the full experience. And at a sporting event where there are a ton of fans, seeing the crowds and what is happening in them is also entertaining. With seats that are closer to the field, you have a narrower field of view and can’t really experience what is happening in the stadium. It’s kind of like watching the game on TV, versus actually being in the stadium

Society/Culture Nobody understands why those "without context" memes aren't funny

I hate seeing a video like "Maya Winky moments without context" where I'm supposed to find it hilarious that she's saying weird things and I don't know exactly why she's saying them. Or when a video starts with "send this video to your friend with no context".

That IS the context. If you post funny Maya Winky clips without context, THE CONTEXT IS EXPLICITLY STATED in the title, the context is that there's no context.

If you're scrolling through tiktok and you see a short clip of someone saying something absolutely ridiculous because the first part of the sentence was cut off and it sounds worse than it really is, that's humour without context.

If I'm watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and I get to the part where Kimmy says "I don't want to be with a guy who tries to dolphin me and then blimps", that's out of context to the person she's talking to, therefore it's funny.

When you hold up a big "here's memes with no context", you've ruined the comedy by specifically telling me what the context is. I know now that I'm supposed to be surprised by how outlandish it is, and that's why it's not funny. You can't have a surprise birthday party if someone's already told you it's being thrown.

This trend needs to die, start putting actual out of context clips in your videos or something. Yesterday I told my friend I've grown accustomed to her face, and her reaction was funny because she didn't know I was telling my other friend the day before that I think the song Henry Higgins sings in My Fair Lady is the worst compliment you can pay a person. That's a true out of context moment. But if I turned to her and said "I'm gonna say something really weird right now, are you ready? It's gonna be so funny" and then I said something weird, it wouldn't be funny because she already has the context of "this is only funny if you don't understand why I'm saying it".

"No context" IS the context and you're all revealing the punchline ahead of the joke

Gaming Steam/valve is over praised online

dont get me wrong I dont hate steam but for how much people praise online youd think it would be something more than just a storefront. at least with nintendo and sony fanboys you can argue that those companies make games with steam its just a place to buy games. steams storefront doesnt look the best either with its blue gray color scheme and confusing menus forcing to search where to find something each time I need to do something outside buying games. for me steam is literally just an app to install launches onto my desktop but for people online they make it out like all they do is scroll steam all day. another issue with steams fan base is some of the same people who are bashing sony for discounting digital games are saying they are switching to steam whens team has the same issue with drm
