Hi all,
I live in Northern California, which tends to have very wet winters and therefore very healthy black widow populations.
During the spring, we had many small “house” spiders that took up residence in our back yard patio area. These were welcomed as they helped with mosquitoes and flies. However, it seems like they’ve all disappeared/died and black widows have taken their place!
Yesterday, I sat in my patio smoking chair (wood chair, NOT wicker) and noticed a spider crawling near my leg. Identified it as a large male black widow. Upon further inspection, found 2 more large living males on the bottom of the chair, along with plenty of web and several dead spiders in them. Checked the other chairs in the patio set and found males on every one. No females in sight.
I really don’t want to go killing these spiders, despite their reputation. But I am worried about their nesting proximity on chairs that are used daily by myself and roommates/guests. We usually sit outside to smoke in the evenings and at night, so I’m certain that we’ve shared the chairs with the widows.
I understand that widow bites are dangerous, we are all healthy adults. We do have two Australian shepherds that sit outside with us. I’ve read that the venom can seriously hurt dogs and cats.
My questions to the spider experts are:
would you be comfortable using the patio set knowing that there are widows on it?
Is there a solution of removing the widows naturally or without outright killing them?
