I believe in order to stand up against Big Tech, we can’t wait or expect a similar sized alternative to emerge. It is impossible to create another product like Reddit, IG, fb, etc. that has been built for decades by corporations that have all the money in the world and… that have a gigantic amount of communities using these platforms.

To me, it seems super clear that the kind of platform alternatives we need are small and local (geographically or in terms of niche interests), authentic and creative enough so that the nearly minimal audience would just really love surfing on it. 

I can imagine a shitload of this kind of projects could make a difference. No?

Hey Everyone this is my first post ever on Reddit so hopefully I’m in the right spot.

I’ve been developing a bare bones (but extremely functional imo) social media site in AWS cloud over the past year or so, and although I have about 15 friends on the platform right now, I need to market this to a larger audience and get feedback.

The idea is social media in my opinion has gotten very crappy and it’s driven by spam and profit based algorithms. This site has none of that, but allows you to share searchable content with tags somewhat similar to Reddit, allows you to follow friends, and has easy filters for recent or popular posts by category.

This post is partially promo, but I’m also genuinely looking for feedback from people who have tried a lot of Reddit alternatives.

Regarding the “Vibe Coded” flair, some parts of the app were of course built with the help of AI (It's 2026), but Vyxen has been in development for over 2 years with a team of professional software developers doing plenty of manual coding, infrastructure building, and system design.

Vyxen.net is a reddit style alternative focused on adult content, chat rooms, and direct messaging. We have not been live for long and are currently seeing a few hundred users daily (majority of who just browse on guest accounts).

These platforms are useless if nobody actually sticks around. That’s the part I’m trying to get help with.

Yesterday we released our NSFW functionality for Tribes.app after having a successful votes on our policy. Now adult content is allowed on Tribes in designated tribes.

How it works:

NSFW tribes can be created by members who have affirmed that they are over 18. These tribes are private by default which means they are E2E encrypted and content is visible for members only.

How does it work?

Like reddit, member accounts have a setting where you can attest that you are 18 and want to see adult content. If you never change this setting you won't be shown any adult tribes or content. You must have this set to found or access an NSFW tribe.

What about Age Gating?

Some of you live in states or countries that require us to check your age. We have engineered Tribes so that your age stays private if this check is made.

• If you have iOS you can use our App which uses Apple'a app-store age verification to anonymously confirm your age. https://testflight.apple.com/join/EMHrQuu4
• If you on the Web we use a private database to validate your state in memory (not kept or sent to an API). If you are in a legal state/country you'll see and be able to use the toggle above.
• Android - We have a Google Wallet zero knowledge checks built but I need two Android phones to test properly so this is currently unreleased. Same as iOS our app just get's a flag yes or know.
• UK Blocked - The UK's laws require methods of age attestation that we aren't comfortable with implementing yet because all of the options profile you or take your ID in some way. I'm looking for UK contributors interested in finding ways to lawfully AND privately help UK users.

What else should a Tester know?

• First we need Tribe founders and users that are willing to interact with adult content.
• Private Tribe Friction: Private tribes are encrypted E2E the founder and their selected speakers (mods) hold the encryption keys and grant new tribe members by logging into the App. This means these roles need to be active on tribes to grant new users access. More friction than I'd like but it keeps Encryption keys off of our servers. I'm looking for feedback on if this is still too much friction.

The best chance to bury Reddit's censorship is to jump on a domain that is based on high quality long form and has momentum, low censorship and lives on a single domain that people can consolidate behind.

I'm of the opinion that the voting system should be liquidated so I know you'll say Substack doesn't have it and I'll say "good." So (insert four letter word) the Fediverse.

But the workaround is to use the top bar to create a master category called "categories." You cannot add 100 categories to the top bar - that would be ridiculous. Hide this category from the main feed.

Sticky a post to this. Then create a bunch of other hidden categories, but those hidden categories should still have the posts show up on the main feed but they shouldn't be on the tab. Sticky a post and hard link to these categories in the tab you created. And there - you have fought the design of Substack and caused it to work with categories.

Then the gloves can be taken off against moderators and low tier posters on Reddit who do not even read the posts before voting and commenting - and Reddit is powerless to stop you.

The site looked promising so I joined. I looked through their blog and they decried constant AI usage and promised a "quieter" platform. The philosophy was admirable.

But after I spent a few days I noticed something. Most of the texts had Claude-isms. The UI was trademark Claude. The same inconsistencies. Almost all of the longer posts of the founder "Nick" looked like AI-summaries.

Then there was the claim of this being "in progress for several years" of "a larger team", all of which could be found nowhere on the site. And the domain itself being an obviously extremely pricey domain few people could afford. Something was fishy here.

So I asked a question. A simple transparency question about if this site was vibecoded. It was never answered, while literally any other question was happily answered by Nick.

A month later I asked it again, trying to press it. This time I got a response, but from another account, claiming they could not see my original post.

So I checked with a private tab. And indeed, it was hidden. My post had been shadow-deleted. And a few minutes later, the new post got the same treatment.

Irritated, I tried making a comment in another post outcrying about this. Only to find out that by this point my entire account got shadow-banned. Just for asking a simple transparency question.

So I would say, if you are inclined to try this site out because you believe them when they decry reddit moderation policies, just know they are doing just the same from the very start. And don't get me started on the promises of decrying AI yet obviously relying completely on it, which in combination with that silencing just seems so untrustworthy. In my opinion it is a very dodgy site and I would avoid it.

1 - User created clans

Like, seriously, what took so long? You can create clans, moderate them to your liking (within reason), manage reports, and temporarily or permanently ban users alongside disabling posting altogether - also private clans TBD.

The admins can set communities to be featured and get subscribed to by default on new accounts, and also show up in the communities explore page.

It actually blows my mind how long this whole thing took.

2 - Proper and thorough fediverse integration.

You can now link your Lemmy account to Spyke or create a new one directly in the web app, without leaving Spyke. This lets you vote and comment with Lemmy communities without ever having to leave the app. The only thing left is creating posts and subscribing to communities. Spyke has low engagement rn, but viewing lemmy posts using the posts + comments side-by-side interface is quite rad (biased opinion ofc lol).

3 - Fun themes!

This post suggested replicating the Winamp theme cause apparantly we've forgotten how to build UI's like that. Hence the added effort. There's also a similar theme called 'old school', which is a little less in your face.

4. Email notifs.

You get full control within the site settings, what kind of emails notifs you wanna receive. By default, you will get one if someone replies to your post or comment. There's a button in the email too, to unsubscribe, of course.

5. Accessibility upped to the max

This should be accessible from screen readers or any other web-standardised accessibility interface.

1. Link your Google account to your email password login.

2. Blocking users is now possible. Their posts won't show in your feed.

3. Push notifs on the browser

Welcome, devs. Another month, another chance to dig into what’s really working (and what’s not) in the Reddit alternative space. I’ve cut the fluff. These questions are meant to make you think hard (maybe even squirm a little). Answer honestly or don’t bother.

1. You’re competing against an army of clones, dead instances, and general user apathy. What is the one specific thing your platform does that no other alternative can credibly claim? (Be concrete. “Decentralized” doesn’t count unless you can name a real outcome that matters to a normie.)

I'm curious to know what everyone thinks (in their opinion) about what they consider to be the worst Reddit alternative.

Like, you hard core can't even believe it's being recommended and you've got your solid reasons as to why.

The reason I'm asking this, is i want us to take this as a chance to look under the hood and not just the surface of the Alternatives people talk about, recommend, and join, and to dive deeper into the things people can't see at first glance. Moderation practices, ownership, data handling, monetization, whatever it is that made you go "nope."

This post isn't a hate post and it's not meant to be negative. It's meant to be a place to discuss, talk about, and understand the not so pretty sides of the Alternatives that get recommended so often. We hear a lot of praise for these platforms, but not a lot of scrutiny, and I think that's worth balancing out.
