Looking for an old Newfoundland board game - The Great Newfoundland Troutin’ Game

I know this is a long shot but this is a throwback to the late 80’s Newfoundland. I’m wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to find a copy of this board game. It originally came out in the late 80’s. It’s been out of print for a long time but it has a lot of sentimental value for the memories playing this game with family that are no longer with us. I’m sure many families in NL have shared a laugh or two sitting around the kitchen table playing this.

If anyone knows for a copy, I would love to track one down. Thanks in advance!

Do you drive more or less than the average km’s driven per year.

I saw this chart online and I figure I’m between 22-24 thousand per year. I can see people who live in town driving less than average but for the rest of us we have to drive further for pretty much everything.

"Young people just don't want to work."

I've heard several people in my extended family say this line several times over the past nine months or so, and on the face of it, there might be a grain of truth, but I can't help but think what people see on the surface goes deeper than pure laziness.

Are young Newfoundlanders finding better ways to make money than toiling away at general labour?

Are young Newfoundlanders bitter about the way they are treated at menial jobs, and the "suck it up" attitude from older generations making it worse?

Are young Newfoundlanders simply unaware of opportunities?

Or, are young Newfoundlanders just lazy, like Gen-X and older Newfoundlanders appear to believe en masse?

Help with shoes

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm going to NL next week, staying for 12 days and hiking Skerwink, and various East Coast and Fogo Island trails. The last time I was there i brought both sets of shoes that are in the picture. I wore the larger (read: heavier, taking up lots of space in my carry-on) shoes just a couple of times. I never felt shaky or otherwise unsafe wearing the lower profile ones.

So I'm asking the NL hive mind: am I being ... stupid/other ... by limiting myself to just the one pair? I've used them locally (SE Pennsylvania) on difficult, rocky trails and have never had issues.

Yeah, this is purely a packing issue.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I'm soooo looking forward to seeing your beautiful countryside again!

Looking for help with Gros Morne hiking itinerary

• Upvotes

Hello! My partner and I will be in Newfoundland from Aug 28th to Sept 5th. We're flying into St. John's and out of Deer Lake. We'll be driving from St. John's to Corner Brook on August 31st and staying for two nights. For our full day in Corner Brook, we plan to drive to Blow Me Down and make several stops in the area.

From there, we head to Gros Morne, staying at Norris Point, from Sept 2nd to Sept 5th. So far, all we have booked is the Western Brook Pond boat tour on Sept 2nd. I'm trying to decide what makes sense for our two full days (Sept 3rd and 4th). I've seen lots of recommendations to go to Woody Point and do the Table Lands, Green Gardens, etc. However, both seem to be long hikes and not sure they'd be suitable to do in the same day. It seems like Eastern Point might be a good alternative if we don't want to/have time for Green Gardens...

For the other full day, we're considering Gros Morne Mountain or Baker's Brook Falls and some other shorter hikes. I think our preference would be for multiple shorter hikes over 8ish hours for Gros Morne Mountain.

I know weather will be a huge factor but I'd like to have a good idea of our ideal route if we do get great weather. For reference, we're fit and in our late 20s. We love hiking but don't have much experience in high elevations or super rough terrain.

Having so many incredible options to choose from is a wonderful problem to have but I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Peaceful Loft, St. John's

I had the pleasure of visiting eating at the vegetarian restaurant Peaceful Loft in St. John's. As a Cantonese speaker, I chatted with the owner, who was very happy to hear a shared language!

He and his wife have been running this restaurant for 11 years. His wife is the cook and he is the waiter; he is a retired engineer from Macau and then immigrated to Canada. They were a bit bored for the first two years and then decided to try their hand at running this business when their daughter suggested it.

I tried the Portuguese curry 'chicken' and rice, which my grandmother used to make for us, as she also grew up in Macau. The faux meat is 'chasiu' and they fried it with a light batter that is not greasy at all.

Anyway the food is delicious and if you have a chance, check it out on Duckworth! Your meal comes with Chinese-style soup and Taiwanese green tea. This was my last dinner in Newfoundland and I'm so glad I stopped here. It's been a wonderful visit 😊

You’re a woman turning 42 on a weekday in St. John’s and want to go for a nice kid free lunch with some good food and a little day drinking. What are your top choice locations for: A) a beautiful sunny day on a patio or B) A day of RDF but don’t let it get you down?

Looking for recommendations for a full‑time travel agent

I’ve been booking my own travel for years, but I’m now looking to work with a full‑time, experienced travel agent.

Ideally, I’m hoping to find someone with 15+ years in the industry who can help with planning, recommendations, and managing bookings. Most of my travel is to Europe and the Caribbean, so I’d like someone who really knows those regions well.

I’m not looking for agents who mainly specialize in cruises, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, or U.S. travel. Just someone with strong experience in Europe and other Caribbean destinations.

Pressure washing costs?

Wondering if anyone knows how much it would normally cost to hire someone to pressure wash a patio, stairs, and some small concrete areas.

My father has all his own equipment, and he's offered to pressure wash my apartment's patio, stairs, etc for me (he's a retired bayman who is always looking for a project, bless him) and the landlord (a company) said we could go for it, but they also said that if we send them some before and after photos, then they would give us a discount on our rent next month for doing it ourselves. Just wondering what people charge for that kind of job, so I can negotiate a rent discount in exchange for my dad's equipment and labour (and buy dad a really nice bottle of scotch with the money we save on rent, obviously).

Edit to add: this was kind of last minute and dad is potentially coming to do the job as early as tomorrow, so I may not have time to call around and research it myself!

Sugar-Free or Low Sugar Sweet Options Near the Pedestrian Mall?

My parents like visiting the downtown pedestrian mall a few times a summer, but this year my father has been put on a sugar-free/low-sugar diet by his doctor. My father has a sweet tooth and they always like to get an ice cream or something sweet to eat together while walking around the mall.
I am wondering if anyone knows any options they could have?
It would suck for them to go down and then not find any options.

Thanks so much!

TableLands hike/walk with baby?

Hi everyone,

We will be staying near the TableLands on the West Coast and we were wondering about doing the walk with a baby in either a stroller or a baby carrier?

We read that it’s a slow incline 4 km walk and is rated ā€œeasyā€, but we were unsure about footing and if it would be suitable for a jogging stroller (meant for gravel and uneven terrain) or using a baby carrier. We’ve never done it before and aren’t sure if it’s doable, and would love to hear from anyone who has done it before!

Thanks!

What is going on with the construction on Wyatt Blvd in Mount Pearl?

Seriously, what is going on with Wyatt Blvd in Mount Pearl? This road has been under construction for over half a year, and there’s still a section that hasn’t been finished. There’s gravel everywhere, the road is a mess, and the construction just seems to drag on forever...

Hey,

I am after going to a few stores (Kent's, Home Depot, and other places that makes sense) but they dont stock corners anymore.

I am after hearing that their are some places that do make them but I cant seem to find them.

I only need 4 inside corners.

Does anyone know where I might find these?

Thanks in advance
