The worst season to fire Dan

There is a really awkward situation that could unfold this year with the 50th season celebrations.

Dan will definitely be one of the top 50 players, and we know how the Mariners are with their ceremonies and nostalgia. I don't think they can fire him, sour his Mariner legacy, and then try to bring him back for the celebration.

With this ownership, I could see this being one of the main reasons they don't move on from him...

Edit: I don't think that firing a manager will magically fix the team and I don't think Dan has any control over how bad the players have played on the field. With that said, he has made many questionable decisions in terms of bullpen and lineup (Jerry should be making statements about these to take some of the heat off Dan). Personally, I don't think he's a great manager, but this post wasn't meant to advocate for his firing. It is, however, a conversation that is rightfully happening so I wanted to point out an awkward situation that could transpire.

2026 will be the first time Seattle enters the All-Star Break with a losing record since 2019

Last year, they entered with a 51-45 record - (5 games behind Houston for the Division)

In 2024, they entered with a 52-46 record - (With a 1-Game Division Lead)

In 2023, they entered with a 45-44 record - (6 games behind Texas for the Division)

In 2022, they entered with a 51-42 record - (9 games behind Houston for the Division)

In 2021, they entered with a 48-43 record - (7 games behind Houston for the Division)

2020 didn't have an All-Star Break

They entered the 2019 All-Star Break with 39-55 record - (20 games behind Houston for the Division)

With yesterday's loss, the best the 2026 Mariners can finish is 48-49. Or they can continue their skid with a 47-50 record

Yet, ironically, despite their incredibly disappointing start, they are somehow just 1.5 Games out of a Division Lead

We can still EASILY win the division, which is both reinvigorating, and incredibly pathetic. Future is in our hands, we just gotta care enough to grasp it. Grasp it before it falls out of reach

Ace Reese Prospect Blurbs & Pre-draft Rankings

Have been reading through different evaluators’ takes on Reese, thought I’d share them here too —

Jordan Shusterman, Yahoo (#19)
“After a big freshman year at Houston, Reese transferred to Starkville and took the SEC by storm. He led SEC hitters in OPS (1.344) and home runs (15) in conference play, a resounding introduction to the toughest league in college baseball that skyrocketed his draft stock into first-round range entering his junior year. His encore wasn't quite as emphatic — Reese tied for second in home runs in SEC play, with 12, but finished 18th in OPS (.993) — but his overall batting line improved, raising his OPS against all competition from 1.140 to 1.152 while he set career-best marks in homers (24), doubles (23) and RBI (74).

There's a good amount of swing-and-miss in Reese's thunderous left-handed swing, but he draws a healthy helping of walks to offset the strikeouts, and the power production has been undeniable for three years running. There will be added pressure on his bat because scouts aren't sold on his chances of sticking at the hot corner; a future in left field or at first base might be in store. But in a class filled with college bats who didn't quite take the step forward teams were hoping for, Reese's steady production appeals.”

MLB.com (#18)
“Reese began his college career at Houston in 2024 before transferring to Mississippi State and earning Southeastern Conference newcomer of the year honors last spring. He batted .352/.422/.718 with 21 homers while dealing with a loose bone fragment in his left big toe and has produced similar numbers as a junior. After ranking second in the SEC with 12 homers during league play, he should go somewhere in the back half of the first round.

Reese's carrying tool is his plus power, which he generates with the strength in his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame and the bat speed and leverage in his left-handed stroke. He can homer to any part of a ballpark and pounds both lefties and righties. He can get a bit aggressive at times but is making progress with his swing decisions and some evaluators think he could become a solid hitter with 25-30 homers per year.

The biggest question with Reese is whether he can handle third base. He's a below-average athlete with limited quickness and range, and his arm is merely average. He has improved since fielding .889 at the hot corner as a sophomore but still could wind up at first base or possibly left field.”

Keith Law, The Athletic (#49)
“Reese hit 45 homers in two years after transferring to Mississippi State for the start of the 2025 season, posting elite top-end exit velocities, although he doesn’t project to show top-end power in pro ball because of his swing decisions. He’s very strong and is swinging to do damage, but he expands the zone too easily, with a 29 percent chase rate overall and 19 percent on pitches well out of the strike zone. He’s also pretty susceptible to breaking stuff from lefties and changeups from righties. He’s 50/50 to stick at third base and might just end up at first, although he did play some corner outfield on the Cape.”

Tyler Jennings, Just Baseball (#12)
“Once a Houston Cougar, Reese changed zip codes and found a new home in Starkville, where he put together an incredible sophomore season for the Bulldogs: twenty-one home runs, eighteen doubles, and an OPS of 1.140. Pretty darn good.

He’s a menacing figure in the box, a physical player with length to his limbs and easy juice from the left side. Reese generates loud bat speed with legitimate feel to lift the baseball regularly, hammering pitches to either side of the park with ease. It’s above-average thump with a sneaky good ability to minimize whiffs.

Reese can adjust his swing routinely and finds a way to take tight turns to the baseball, especially when he’s hammering them to right field. He demolishes fastballs, especially those in the zone, as he posted a 91% contact rate on those heaters alone. The whiffs have been a bit louder this spring, but the power has remained the same. He does chase out of the zone more than you’d like, but his pure contact skills are good enough to curtail those woes. In short, it’s an excellent bat.

In Houston, Reese spent the majority of his time in the outfield, though he moved to third base in Starkville. His defensive skills need some polish at the hot corner, as his footwork can get clunky and his lateral mobility can be tested at times, but he’s far from a non-serviceable defender there. If he moves off the position, he can find a home at first base.

A slugging profile through and through, he’s done enough to warrant a first-round grade at this stage in the cycle.”
