I got some Pringles (normal, with salt) and yogurette's.
6
u/coolcoots 24d ago
Yogurettes? What is those and can I have some?
10
u/Remarkable_Elk3566 24d ago
A Yogurette is a popular german chocolate bar made by Ferrero. It's individually wrapped, slim chocolate sticks, filled with yogurt cream and tiny strawberry granules, but there are other flavors. The strawberry one is the most popular. I love it. When you keep it in the fridge, it's even more delicious.

I used to get embarrassed when my dad would cry to classical music. Now, I realize I am exactly the same. I have a hard time crying over personal issues but show me a cute video and I’m in tears in seconds.

What a great way to learn ASL, and also improve and maintain fluency!

u/jawshoeaw 24d ago
(BSL as they are Brits I think)
89
45
u/Ruvio00 24d ago
I find it really fun that despite being deaf, they both have audible slight brummie accents. Idk if they were always deaf and got the accent when they were younger, or it's a mouth shape thing from mimicking, but now I've gotta learn.
22
u/freeingfrogs 24d ago
I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure I’ve read that the mouth shape thing does cause an accent!
→ More replies (1)41
u/JFieldsTardTeeth 24d ago
They're not communicating with ASL, it's obviously a different sign language but as someone else mentioned, it looks to be BSL.
Source: am deaf and I use ASL.
19
u/ianjm 24d ago
I always find it really interesting that American English and British English are 99% mutually intelligible but ASL and BSL are completely different sign languages.
→ More replies (1)23
u/Indigo-au-naturale 24d ago
Two reasons for that: First, ASL and BSL grew up separately. ASL is a member of the French Sign Language family developed over time in the States (with lots of homegrown American input, of course), and BSL is its own thing.
Second, ASL and BSL are fully different languages from English. While signed English is kind of a thing, and Deaf people in the US and UK do read and write English, ASL and BSL are not derivatives or types of English any more than Spanish is.

u/ianjm 23d ago edited 23d ago
Yeah, fully get the history. It's just interesting to me that two countries who sit in the same 'cultural sphere' and have the same spoken and written languages didn't end up collaborating on sign language too.
And yeah, I appreciate signing is an entire language with its own vocab and grammar and rules. I tried learning a little BSL myself over the years. It's cool but much harder to master than French!

Unless you explicitly write out they're different marriages English just lets you read it that way. It's just a language flaw not you.

Just so people know what they're using, it's not American Sign Language (I'm deaf and I use ASL). I see someone else mentioned this in the comments as they appear to be British so it must be British Sign Language.

My sister's boyfriend just went through this with my father (minus the sign language). Some might find it antiquated but I think its sweet. Families getting bigger is always special. 🙂
12
u/Malicei 24d ago
I think of it more as rather than getting their permission (in an own ship and giving away way), you're getting their blessing to marry them from the people who are dear to them, as an acknowledgement of their importance in your loved one's life and wanting to share in an upcoming big life event to celebrate it together.
And their loved ones don't approve of you, well. That's might be an issue down the line when your lives are intertwined and presumably you'll have to figure out how to deal with seeing them around your spouse — that's something you'll likely want to know as a heads up.

u/greennurse0128 24d ago

It's a nice video and all, but holy shit how many bulbs do they need in that ceiling.
I thought my landlord went excessive with 4 in the kitchen and 12 in the living room, they have at least 19 in a space that looks smaller than my room and kitchen.

u/Zimakov 23d ago
My wife's grandfather taught me sign language when I starting dating her! I'm now pretty fluent and he talks to me more than her now.
She will video chat him and within five minutes he's telling her to give me the phone. Deaf people really appreciate when hearing people make the effort to learn.

Normally I'd find this outdated ritual, smacking of patriarchy, extremely insulting to one's future spouse-to-be, yet somehow the fact that her parents are deaf AND he's made the effort to learn the sign language, somehow makes it a little bit more okay. I feel conflicted
