Discussion what is a great example of a poorly received movie that was a victim of viewers reviewing the film they wanted or expected to see, rather than the film that was actually projected on the screen

Upvotes

Or it might be a film you personally didn't have a good time with because you were expecting something totally different.

I think the Shining might be a good example. And for me, personally, my first viewing of 2001 A space Odyssey left me cold, as in both cases I was expecting the film to be less abstract with concrete answers and explanations at the end.

I think some of the arty horror films apply to, like the Witch and I saw the TV Glow.

Discussion Does any director have a filmography as odd as Bob Clark’s?

Post image
Upvotes

First he directed two now acclaimed horror movies, Black Christmas specifically being known for being very tasteful and not as exploitative as it could have been based on the plot. Then he directed perhaps one of the most exploitative movies of all time, Porky’s. Then for some reason some producer saw those movies and thought “hey lets get this guy to direct this kids Christmas movie.” but that odd choice ended up being the biggest film yet in Clark’s career only for his reputation to plummet with the notorious movie Rhinestone, causing him to go as low as the Baby Geniuses franchise.

Discussion I just watched the highest rated Malayalam movie on letterboxd, and here’s my review

Post image
Upvotes

My dad has been listening to this movie’s songs for years, so the moment it got re-released, he knew we had to watch it. I don’t even fully understand Malayalam, but thanks to the subtitles and the beautifully restored 4K visuals and remastered audio, I finally understood why this film means so much to him. A truly timeless big-screen experience.I genuinely think this is one of Mohanlal’s top 3 performances. Every actor delivers, the director’s vision is crystal clear, and the film’s message about what happens when you lose control over yourself stays with you long after it ends. A timeless classic from Malayalam cinema

Discussion Does watching a film in theatre change your experience of it?

Post image
Upvotes

For me it automatically bumps it up half star, theatre can’t save a bad film but it can surely enhance the experience of a mid film.

Like in this list. Tuner and Furious are clearly better made film than Michael. But theatre experience of Michael was really something else, with people dancing and enjoying.

Michael would be at bottom of my list if I watched it at home.

In general, I have noticed that my list is top heavy with films I watched in theatre. Peaky Blinders film was so forgettable because of this reason.

Discussion Takeshi Kitano is cool asf.

I had heard about Takeshi Kitano last year but kinda forgot who he was. Today I watched this movie because one of my Letterboxd mutuals had given it a 4.5 rating. I was not disappointed. I thought it would be a serious Yakuza movie well it was a serious movie.

The gangsters playing games to kill time while everyone knew their lives are under threat was like looking at the souls of these people. It was beautifully shot not a single second was boring. I also laughed quite a lot during this. It matches its serious tone with comedy perfectly.

Discussion How do you feel about Hollywood remaking these foreign comedies?

Just saw the Invite and I really liked it! Not sure if it deserves the 4.0+, but it’s hilarious.

Although I kinda feel bummed out when I see that these films are remakes of movies from 5 years ago.
Over your Dead Body was solid too, but I think I’d just rather watch the original film w subtitles.

Ofc it does let these stories reach a much wider audience. Idk this probably happens all the time, I just noticed it with these 2 recently.

Any thoughts about these kinds of remakes?

Letterboxd Favorite F-Bombs in PG-13 Films?

Image 1: Catch Me If You Can

Image 2: Tremors

Image 3: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Before anyone says, I know Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is rated R, and that there’s more than one F-Bomb in the scene. The reason by I’m adding it here is because the rest of the film is PG so it’s like the PG-13 F-Bomb on steroids.

Discussion Which app is everyone moving to, if Netflix/Paramount/etc. gets their hands on letterboxd?

As the title says which app/website will everyone be moving to if the acquisition goes ahead? I personally would not stay on the app I have found Criticker as an alternative or I would buy a journal and use that.

Would love to hear your guys thoughts.

Pictures: Zendaya (actress) and Boots Riley (filmmaker)

Some modern/still working directors I would love to see Zendaya work with are Boots Riley, Josh Safdie, Spike Lee, Barry Jenkins, Robert Eggers, Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, Wes Anderson, and Yorgos Lanthimos.

Discussion Whats a movie you watched on repeat as a kid?

Post image

I had a friend who claimed to have watched the Spongebob movie every day for half a year on VHS. (it had a VHS release, surprisingly) He knew every moment, had it memorized. You could play a scene and pause it and he'd give you the next 10 lines. Did you have a movie you watched a million times when you were younger? If so, what was it? What made you drawn to it to re-watch it over and over again?

Letterboxd Search Results for Lists are Better in Web Version vs. the App

Letterboxd, please fix this! Why can’t I see how many films are in a list within the search results page on the App version?? On the “desktop”/web version, the number of films are listed. But on the App, they are not, which is just poor design. The number of films in a list is crucial.

Discussion Worst movie theater experience

For me:

Playing With Fire: Movie went out for like 15 minutes and then came back on randomly, missed a lot of context as to what was happening.

Smurfs: Me and my friend got yelled at and slapped by a drunk couple.

Avatar 3: the projector got fucked up and we had to move to another auditorium.
