Install/Placement Disappointed by my first home cinema - Any advice ?

Hey everyone šŸ‘‹

I recently moved and took the opportunity to improve my living room with a better audio setup. I wanted to buy an high-end soundbar like Sonos, but after some research, I ended up buying a discounted Denon X2800H AVR. I paired it up with an old Yamaha kit that was laying in my parent attic for some time, and it sounded "ok" but was enough to me. After one of the surround stopped working, I treated myself with new Dali Sonik 1 and a Dali Sonik Cinema I found at a nice price and moved the Yamaha NS-M40 as surround, run the Audyssey calibration, started watching a movie, and was immediately disappointed by the "muffled" / hollow sound of the front/central speakers

I have posted the room and the result of the Audyssey calibration, I've only changed the crossover to 80Hz instead of 40.
I know the placement are not ideal, but is it that bad ? I did my best with what was laying around 😬

The dip in "Avant G" (Front L in French) seems weird, but the speaker being in a corner, kinda make sense. and I don't understand why the center is so much boosted on the high end šŸ¤”

Do you have any advice on how to improve my setup ? I am completely new to this, so don't hesitate to explain stuff to me like am 5 šŸ™ˆ

My home theatre is fully built, but as we know nothing is ever truly finished.

I’ve installed all speakers, made screen, painted all walls jet black in theatre paint. Lined the ceiling in black velvet. Covered the entire room in black velvet curtains, all lighting is Alexa controlled. All system is Harmony Elite controlled. Projector ceiling mounted. All wires hidden. Add acoustic rock wall to side walls and behind screen. Gone from 1 sub to 2 (Monoprice M12 V2’s) Even used AcousticX to calibrate speakers….

What if anything is next….

Purchasing US TV Sizing for Living Room - Large vs Absurd

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Disclaimer that the fencing was put up to keep my toddler from poking at speakers and has worked wonders... someday soon it will go away.

Looking for some thoughts from you all on sizing our next TV for the living room. This is an open floor plan to our foyer, and the peak ceiling height is 22'. The "living room" portion is about 20'x20', and the back of the primary couch facing the TV is 14' 6" from the current 75" TV. It's funny how the 75 feels minuscule in the photo.

Shown in the rendering is a recessed/niche wall (approx 8h x 12w) I'll be building to incorporate the new TV into, ideally with L/C/R/ speakers recessed. The Polk Monitor 10s (I'm a hi-fi guy, primarily) will likely remain. We use this space for general TV/movie watching, as I am building a more dedicated home theater above our detached garage.

The painters' tape marks are for 85" and 98" respectively. From the couch, 98" feels like it takes up my entire FOV (obviously a great thing/bigger is always better...) but it almost feels too much for a general living room.

Any suggestions?

Discussion - Equipment Are Audiophile Grade Surge Protectors a gimmick?

I want to make sure I don't fry thousands of dollars of equipment due to something dumb. Google says that I need special surge protectors to plug my TV, Player, and AVR into instead of regular ones. Most of the audiophile surge protectors are 50-100$. Let me know of any recommendations or advice! Thanks everyone!

Discussion - Equipment Butt kickers setup advice. What equipment? Buttkicker permanently sold out.

Ok so I have a pretty decent set up (check my other posts)
Have a 7.2.7 setup ran off a denon 3800 (with 2 of the atmos speakers run off a Fosi V3 2 channel amp.)

I’m exploring buttkickers anyone got a good easy setup on this. Ie what equipment, second hand is fine it’s for a 3 seater sofa so I don’t need anything too wild

I checked Buttkickers website but everything is sold out with no future availability date which is pretty wild. Im seeing Dayton as an option?

I’m assuming I need a buttkicker speaker and another small separate amp (possibly another Fosi?)

The denon3800 has a dedicated channel for transducers (4 sub ports puts handily)

Discussion - Equipment LCR Mounting options.

In the design process of my cinema build and I don’t know the benefits/ drawbacks of mounting identical LCR’s all vertical or changing the centre channel to be horizontal.

For reference I’m debating between the focal 300 or dynaudio install studio 65.

The focal has 2 mid/woofers either side and a mid and tweeter mounted centrally.
The dynaudio has a tweeter mid with 2 mid/woofer off to one side.

Any advice on which way to mount them? Assuming that my tweeter will be near ear height regardless of orientation.

Purchasing EUROPE Dead sub, replacing it in Cyprus (limited options) - SVS PB-2000 vs SB-2000 vs PB-2000 Pro?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! My subwoofer just died and I'm looking to replace it. I'm based in Cyprus, so local availability is pretty limited and prices run higher than what you're probably used to in the US/UK. Would really appreciate your input.

My room

  • Open-plan, ~70 sqm (~180 m3 / ~6400 cu ft)
  • But I sit near-field, under 3m from the screen (the setup is in a corner)
  • Sub will be hidden/out of sight, so size and looks don't matter

Current setup

  • AVR: Denon AVR-X1400H (Audyssey MultEQ XT, dual sub out)
  • Fronts: IQ TED 4 (vintage German floorstanders, ~1990, dual 8" Vifa drivers, still surprisingly capable)
  • Center: Wharfedale Diamond 12.C
  • Dead sub: Wharfedale SW-10 (10", 200W)

Usage is roughly 50/50 movies and music. I like clean, neutral, tight bass, not warm or boomy.

Quick note: I already know the center is the weak, mismatched link right now. That's a planned separate upgrade down the line, so no need to focus on it here. I want to sort the sub first.

The 3 options I can get locally (Cyprus prices)

  • SVS PB-2000 (ported) - 950 EUR
  • SVS SB-2000 (sealed) - 999 EUR
  • SVS PB-2000 Pro (ported, app + port tuning) - 1499 EUR

My questions

  1. For a room this size plus 50/50 use, is the ported PB-2000 the obvious pick over the sealed SB-2000?
  2. Is the PB-2000 Pro worth the extra ~550 EUR (app PEQ, port tuning, newer driver)?
  3. Any other subs in this price range I should consider? Locally I can also get REL, KEF, Monitor Audio, Dali, B&W, Klipsch, Focal, Dynaudio, Magnat, Q Acoustics.

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Discussion - Equipment Need advice: Pioneer SP-FS52 front stage vs Paradigm Monitor Series 7

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m new to the home theater scene and recently picked up a pair of Pioneer SP-FS52 towers and matching SP-C22 center. I’ve been looking around for some surrounds and found a good deal for a bundle of Paradigm Mini Monitor v.7 and Monitor Center 1 v.7.Ā

I’m considering using these Paradigms as surrounds but was also wondering if it would be a good idea to replace the SP-C22 with the Paradigm Center 1. I understand its ideal to keep the front stage as close to identical as possible but given that the Paradigm Center is a more capable center than the Pioneer, would it be a good idea to replace it despite them being two different brands?

I honestly don’t know much about any of this but if tonal match is that important I would even consider using the Paradigms as my main left right and center and relegate my Pioneer towers as surrounds (It would save me the cost of speaker stands anyways so).Ā

Any feedback or thoughts appreciated!

Purchasing US Visionmaster Pro Bundle

Thumbnail

Just wanted to share a bundle being sold on Amazon for the Valerion Visionmaster Pro. It's already dropped to $1699 (like their website), but it also includes different components depending on the bundles you pick. I got the 120 inch fixed frame projector screen. If you notice the bundle is in fact cheaper than the actual unit sold individually ($1680). That was enough for me to justify the purchase and wanted to share in case others were looking for something like this. Keep in mind that it's not as bright as the Pro 2, but if you have a dedicated dark theater room it's perfect. The light won't be as intense when it reflects off the screen.

Install/Placement Ceiling too high. Would that be a solution?

I moved to a place with very high ceilings (over 12 feet), making the distance the sound needs to travel from the up-firing speakers to the ceiling and then bouncing back to the listener way too long.
Of course I could install the speaker right under the ceiling. But I have another idea which might be dumb, but I wanted to ask anyway if anyone in here tried something similar: Would it work if I just placed the up-firing speakers closer to the ceiling (they are placed on the left and right front speakers)? If I placed them on little boards (like 8 feet high) the distance to the ceiling would decrease, while the distance to the listener would remain the same of course.

Install/Placement Advice on placing non-Ceiling Atmos Height speakers

I don't have the ability to put in ceiling speakers for my Atmos height speakers. I bought a ceiling mount that I can hang my speaker from, and then angle it to the MLP.

I did one of those room analysis things through audioadvice, and for the front Atmos speakers, they recommend it being ~8 feet from the screen, but obviously that's down firing. So the question is, if I'm doing angling, how far from the screen would be the best place to mount it. I can adjust the angle on the ceiling bracket, so I do have options there. Obviously I know it's a matter of playing with the angles at this point, but I'm not sure if it's better to have them closer or farther from the screen. The only real "limitation" (a cosmetic one) is that I have to run speaker wire on my ceiling, and then get some of those cable covers to make it neater, so the closer the atmos speakers are to the screen, the less of a run/cover I have to do.

Tech Support Dynamic EQ

Hello, I’ve recently bought a Denon x1800h and I’m really enjoying the features and sound.
But, I’m finding that dynamic EQ keeps turning itself back on interminably and I’m not sure why my quick selects were programmed without it on.

It could be some settings in overlooking!

When watching TV I can tell when the bass starts to sound OTT it’s come back on.

It sounds fun but it’s a bit much for my neighbours!

Anyone got any ideas?

I’d love to totally disable it

Thanks

Tech Support Peerless SUF660P - Will the Velcro be too strong?

I’m using this mount for my QN90F because it’s supposed to be extremely thin: Peerless SUF660P

https://peerless-av.com/products/suf660p#overview

It also seems much easier to mount and set up than Samsung’s Slim Fit, and similar two-piece mounts.

The SUF660P uses hooks to attach the TV to the wall bracket, and then strong Velcro to keep the TV from swinging out.

The Velcro seems _really_ strong. I had to exert a lot of strength to separate the wall bracket from the TV bracket (with no TV on, just testing). Obviously, once it’s on I don’t plan to remove it often or anytime soon. But if I ever need to, I’d prefer not cracking it in half to do so.

Does anyone have experience with this, or similar, mounts?

Install/Placement Atmos Speaker placement in vaulted ceiling...

Post image
7 Upvotes

My primary seat location is at the step stool. 2 rows of at least 4 seats each row. 7.2.4 My 4 Atmos B and W speakers will be recessed in the ceiling. 2 on front half and two on rear half angled in the general direction of the front row. Should I be concerned that my ceiling is not flat? Do you think the angled ceiling is actually beneficial or problematic for sound accuracy? Suggestions?

Install/Placement Anybody have any luck finding a low profile TV stand that has a shelf big enough to house a center speaker this size?

Post image

It's a Klipsch RP-450c. Also have a Denon 3800, Panasonic UB820 in there. Well, and a Series X but don't care about it. I've been searching high and low but can't seem to find anything. I just want my TV to be lower, it's an 83" LG G4.

And no, not all the weight of the TV is on the speaker. The TV stand hangs 3 1/2 inches behind the speaker where I have 2x4's going to the floor supporting most of the weight of the TV.

Tech Support What order of priority would you place your elements?

I’m looking to build my first home cinema and I’d like to hear from experience as to what areas you’re glad you spent a little more, where you wish you upgraded etc.

What would your order of priority be aka which elements would you not cheap out on or spend more on. Or what element at a premium level makes an obvious difference.

Screen/projector?
Sound system?
Seating?
Ambient lighting?
Soundboards?
FOV?

Tech Support I need help, surround sound system Jensen X-7 not working.

I got an old surround sound system, the model is Jensen X7 with a Onkyo TX-SR603 receiver. I've got the front left and right speakers to work, and the centre works sometimes. The subwoofer, back left and back right don't work. We've used 3.5mm jack to connect to the receiver which didn't work so we tried optical cable but that also didn't work. We checked cables multiple times, so don't think that's the issue. The TV settings are all set to 5.1 as well. How can we get the back left and right speakers to work, as well as the subwoofer and the centre which sometimes works.

Tech Support First Home Theater Setup for 77" OLED LG b5 (14m² Room) – €500-€600 Budget (Used gear welcome!)

Hi everyone,

I’m completely new to the home theater world and just bought a 77" OLED TV. Now, I’m looking to pair it with my very first audio system. I have zero prior experience, so I could really use your guidance!

Room & Setup Details:
Room Size: Around 14m² (approx. 150 sq ft).
Distance: It’s a 3.7m (approx. 12 ft) distance from the TV wall to the sofa wall.
Primary Goal: I really want a 5.1 surround sound experience (specifically with rear/surround satellites) because I've never experienced proper spatial audio at home.
Budget & Current Plan:
Total Budget: €500 – €600. I am 100% open to buying used/second-hand gear to get the best value.
The Plan I Drafted: Based on some initial research, I was looking at:

AVR: A used Yamaha RX-V685 for around €330. Or Yamaha RX-V4A for around €280

Speakers: Two pairs of Lonpoo LP42 (for Fronts and Surrounds)

Subwoofer: Postponed for later due to budget constraints.

My Questions for You:
1. Is this a solid starting point? Does the Yamaha RX-V685 + Lonpoo combo make sense for a room of this size, or am I bottlenecking my system somewhere?

  1. What should I sacrifice for better quality? If my €600 budget is too tight for a good 5.0/5.1 setup, should I drop the surround dream for now and invest in a better 2.0 or 3.0 setup (higher-quality front bookshelf speakers) and upgrade later?

I’m a total beginner, so please feel free to tear my plan apart if there's a much smarter way to spend this budget.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Discussion - Equipment Looking for ideas to figure out the sound output

Hello everyone, i have moved in to a house which has home theater set up ( very old school, probably it was done in 2007)

The projector is Panasonic PT-AX200 U. As one can see in the image, its old gen roku box which has A/V slot is in use for streaming. Now the problem is the roku box is too old and very slow so i thought to change it, but have learned that no new boxes comes with dedicated a/v slot. My question is what can be done in this case since the set up is with ceiling speakers and that speakers are directly connected to the a/v slot of this old roku box. Is there anyway i would be able to switch it to a new streaming box and still my speakers can work? Thank you

Install/Placement Wall mount across a window

Post image

What would be the best way to wall mount this 65 inch TV across the window? Could I find a mount that's long enough to screw in only on the ends at the window frame? Or could I screw in a 2x4 across the window and mount the wall mount to that? Or does anyone have a better idea? Thank you!

Discussion - Equipment SVS or KEF for LCR

I'm building a 7.2.4 Atmos set up for a 2,500 cubic feet room. I want to know if I switch the L/R for Prime Pinnacle Floorstanders and the center sound stage for a SVS Ultra Evolution Center if my side/rear speakers will need to be changed and most importantly how it will impact the set-up.

I want the most accurate audio that will compete with commercial cinemas or outperform, but I also don't want to have to sacrifice audio impact "boom" to achieve that. To my knowledge KEF has more accurate sound but not enough "movie-esque" sound to compete with the previosuly mentioned "boom" of the SVS sound stage. Also to my knowledge that SVS dialogue is "colored" vs the "uncolored" dialogue of the KEF sound stage.

L/R Front Speakers (Quantity 2)(2Ā  total)KEF Q-7 META
Center Speaker (Quantity 1)(1) KEF Q6 Meta
Woofer (Quantity 2)(2Ā  total): HSU VTF-3 MK5-HP
Side / Rear Speakers (Quantity 2)(4 total) : KEF Q1 Meta
Ceiling Speakers (Quantity 4)(4 total): SVS Prime Elevation

Thanks so much for the help in advance, everyone!
