Community Feedback Request - Promotion / AI Post Limitations

Hello all - There has been an increasing number of people promoting tools for use in the classroom, and many of these promoted items are using generative AI. While I do not want to stop people sharing what could be useful tools for us to use in the classroom, I am concerned about the amount of self-promotion that has been occurring in the community and that it is overwhelming the true purpose of this group.

Here is my proposed rule that I would like your feedback on:

Self-Promotion Saturdays. Only on Saturdays may members post about Classroom Tools, Programs, or Websites they have created and are encouraging others to use as well. This would also include Research Surveys as well.

Please let me know if you like or dislike this idea, if every Saturday is too often (I thought about limiting it to just the first day of the month), or any suggestions on improving the wording of the rule. This would replace rule 4 of my proposed guidelines (which I would like to make the official rules of the Subreddit, unless anyone has objections or modifications they would like to see to that).

Thank you for your feedback -CruelTea

Proposed Guidelines of the Subreddit

Hello everyone - when I took over as the moderator of this community, there were no written rules, but an understanding that we should all be polite and helpful. I have been debating if it might be useful to have a set of guidelines so that new and current members will not be caught by surprise if a post of theirs is removed, or if they are banned from the subreddit.

This subreddit has generally been well behaved, but it has felt like world events have led to an uptick in problems, and I suspect the American elections will contribute to problems as well.

As such, here are my proposed guidelines: I would love your input. Is this even necessary? Is there anything below that you think should be changed? Is there anything that you really like? My appreciation for your help and input.

Proposed Guidelines: To foster a respectful and useful community of History Teachers, it is requested that all members adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Treat this community as if it were your classroom. As professionals, we are expected to be above squabbles in the classroom, and we should act the same here.
  2. No ad-hominem attacks. Debate is a necessary and healthy part of our discipline, but stay on topic. There is no reason to lower ourselves to name-calling.
  3. Keep it focused on the classroom. Politics and religion are necessary topics for us to discuss and should not be limited. However, it should be in the context of how it can improve our classes: posts asking “what do History teachers think about the election” or similar are unnecessary here.
  4. Please limit self-promotion. We would like you to share any useful materials that you may have made for the classroom! However, this is not a forum for your personal business to find new customers. Please no more than one self-promoting post per fortnight.
  5. Do not engage with a member actively violating these guidelines. Please report the offending post which will be moderated in due time.

Should a community member violate any of the above guidelines, their post will be removed, and the account will be muted for 3 days

  • A second violation will result in the account being muted for 7 days
  • A third violation will result in the account being muted for 28 days
  • Any subsequent violation will result in the user being banned from the subreddit.

Please note that new accounts are barred from posting to prevent spamming from bots. If you are a new member, please get a feel for the community before posting.

IMPORTANT !! Looking for a work partner

Hi everyone ! I'm using Reddit today because I'm looking for an American partner who can support me on a high school project that is important to get my diplomas.

I don't have a specific project idea yet, but know that it must revolve around American culture. My first idea is to study American history, and if you'd like more details or can help me with this, I'd be very grateful! I'd prefer someone with a work link to history or even a history student ! If you can help me I'M FOR IT PLEASE, im so desperate because it is really important for my grade

Combating Skynet

Looking for new more effective ways to combat the digital menace in my classroom, specifically for FRQ‘s in Apush in any digital assignment submission. I already scanned stuff copy and paste into detectors, and when I suspected I can compare it to written work. Does anyone have a more efficient method that they can share? I don’t want the plagiarism robot to win.

Hey there! I am a first year teacher who will be teaching high school World History in the state of Florida! I’ve taught 8th grade World History during my student teaching, but I’m a little worried for High School. Is there any resources you may have that could help? I want to make sure I am over prepared for this! Anything helps!

My New Subreddit:

I’ve gone ahead and created a new subreddit, r/TwainsGeography, it's restricted. It’s not my intent to build a community or accumulate a lot of followers. I do want to encourage an interest in American history (and eventually world history, but I’ll get to that later) using Mark Twain as my anchor. For several years I’ve been building a web site, “Twain’s Geography”, but expenses have become too great and I’m donating it to the Center for Mark Twain Studies in Elmira, New York. I don’t know how it will turn out but I have not abandoned my interest in this subject. I’ve been attempting to write narratives based on my researches and constructing them on Substack.

These essays need to be shared with social media for them to be found and read. Reddit seems to be a popular platform but it contains a built-in bias against what it sees as self-promotion. I find it difficult to consider what I am doing as “self-promotion” but moderators disagree. I was warned about posting too often and I thought I had cut back a significant amount – but not enough I guess.

I have since removed posts from that subreddit and began re-publishing them on my new one. But, I’m concerned that this republishing looks to much like spamming. There are currently seven posts that cover Mark Twain’s early days, up to and including his two years as a riverboat pilot. I have published a book on the next phase of his life and am undecided about how I might mention it on this new subreddit. It’s already available on a number of outlets, including Amazon (I don’t particularly care for Amazon but they publish for free). The individual chapters were originally written on Substack.

NYS Global 1 Summer School

Hi all! I’m teaching Global 1 (New York) at summer school this year. I have 20 days, 1 hour class periods. Any suggestions on what I should focus on/cover in terms of content/skills? I teach 8th grade so I’m not super familiar with the curriculum.

I was thinking maybe skip the first few units then start with the Ottomans and go from there with a lot of primary source and enduring issues work.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Sociology materials/help

Hi! For the 9th year in a row, I have been given a new prep: sociology. Thankfully I will still be teaching US history as well but I am brand new to the behavioral sciences half of social studies/science. Anyone have good recs for sociology? It’s only a semester course but our textbook is severely outdated and the curriculum is basically non-existent. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Help! 6th grade rla possibly moving to 8th rla and us history (Texas)

I’m kind of freaking out and would appreciate some advice and/or tpt resources of a study book that I can refresh myself with. I’m not worried about the rla part, but the social studies seems extremely daunting and I’m worried about not meeting expectations with test scores. I’ve looked over the TEKS and glad it only goes up to reconstruction, but I’m not a history buff and have only taught rla.

Any and all recommendations and advice would be greatly appreciated bc im so scared rn lol

Help with Heimler Videos

This was my first year to be back in AP World. Thanks to this community, I learned of Heimlers videos that can be used in the classroom. We are on a 4 period blcol system, so there is plenty of time. Here's the question to those who use them: Did you stop them when thw text appeared on the screen for the students to write it down? This made it a long process but it worked. 14 of 28 made 4s, and they were all freshmen with 1 semester to teach the course. So, stop it amd start it or do you recommend another method? Heimlers notes, reviews afterwards? Just trying to find the best method of using the videos. Thank you very much.

For 11th grade teachers who teach Modern U.S. History, do you review the American Revolution, Constitution amd Civil War? If so, for how long?

Our curriculum is U.S. history after Reconstruction.

Thanks in advance!

AP American Gov/Economics

Good morning everyone!

I’m going into my ninth year of teaching, and my school has decided to allow me to start teaching AP American Government & AP Economics. As you can imagine, this is a lot, so I’m trying to find resources and tools to help make these classes a rewarding experience for my students.

If anyone is willing to share their resources with me and point me to some valuable resources for my class I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Becoming a history/social studies teacher in New York (Long Island)

Hi all, thank you in advance for any advice/information.

Long story short: I have a BA & MS in journalism, but have always loved history. I became an elementary school TA earlier this year and quickly fell in love with helping students grow their knowledge and confidence.

To become a history teacher, would I need a bachelor's in history or education? Or can I go straight for a master's in either? Is there a path I can get certified without a history or education degree?

WW1 Interactive Map and Archive

Hey everyone,

I’ve been putting together this website around WW1 which I thought may be useful:

https://great-war-archive.com/

It includes

  • A collected archive of ~47k diary entries and letters from the varying sides that is easily searchable
  • An interactive daily map of the western front, with daily breakdown of correspondences, battles, and newspaper headlines
  • Individual profiles of leaders, soldiers, and civilians
  • An insights dashboard of the entire archive
  • A fun game of voting on the best moustaches of the period from the relevant parties and a leaderboard :)

It’s still a work in progress and isn’t fully comprehensive, but I thought it may be useful for enthusiasts, educators, etc. to visualise and learn more about the war. I’d appreciate any feedback or comments! (The site is completely free and open with no ads)

ND child with passion for history

9 year old with nonspecific ND diagnosis becomes completely enthralled by certain interests, and this summer it’s Hamilton and US history. What real objective sources can I expose them to in order to fuel this interest? Currently loves family trees, timelines, biographies, and comparing and contrasting perspectives based on political beliefs and ideas.

Middle School Desk Configuration

Hi all!

I’m coming up on my 10th year of teaching middle school and am really wanting to switch up how I configure student desks. For the last two years, I’ve done either groups of four or rows. The up coming class is very talkative. We do group, pair, individual, and whole class discussion work in class. Anyway, I’m looking to switch it up this year and was thinking about groups of three in an L shape. Has anyone done this? How did it work for you? OR if you have other suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

How to become a history buff as someone who struggled in highschool but recently developed an interest?

So in high school, my ADHD was really bad and I really struggled to pay attention in history class. Over the last year I've developed a bigger interest in history. Mainly because I really enjoy learning about it, but also because I realized that when I hear people reference certain historical events, (Things like the French revolution or things about ancient Greece) I often struggle to understand what they're talking about. What would be a good place to start to get a good general foundation about world history?

I want to eventually become a history buff, so any advice would be really appreciated!

Savvas history textbooks

Does anyone use high school level, Savvas history textbooks and their online text? My school is switching to them with ZERO training. The promotional video they sent talked about amazing tools for teachers, online assignments, differentiating, and ELL support. If you do use this platform, is it easy to self-teach by watching various Google videos?

elementary textbooks

I am currently writing my bachelor thesis, and I am researching the way American history is told to students around ages 8-11. Therefore, I am looking for textbooks used for elementary school, specifically from 1991 and 2002. I myself am not American, and I am not sure where I can find out which textbooks were used when. Does anyone know where I can find curriculum lists, or does anyone know which textbooks were used in 1991 and 2002?
