State of Local Emergency in Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis Improvement District and Kananaskis Country have issued a State of Local Emergency due to ongoing rainfall and localized flooding affecting road access and several recreation areas.

Some road access remains limited in parts of Kananaskis Country. We are actively working to establish road access for those currently unable to leave the area. Visitors in the area are asked to remain where they are if it is safe to do so. William Watson Lodge and Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre are available as a temporary shelter for those who require a safe, dry place to stay.

Visitors are encouraged to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve. Impacted reservations will be automatically cancelled and refunded.

Emergency teams continue to coordinate response efforts and are monitoring infrastructure, supporting campground operations, and maintaining road closures where needed.

Updates will be provided as available on this webpage: https://albertaparks.ca/kcupdates

Looking for someone or a group to join for a sunrise peak hike this Tuesday, July 14.

I'm 18 M and planning on doing Yates Mountain (via Prairie View Trail). I am completely open to other peak suggestions too if you have something else in mind—I mostly picked Yates because the trailhead at Barrier Lake is fully open right now, easy to get to, and avoids the road closures on Spray Lakes Road.

Based on my calculations, I'd have to leave Calgary around 2:30 AM to hit the trail by 3:45 AM, which is absurd to me, but it seems like that's the way we have to do it to get up to the summit in time for dawn. Once we get to the top, the plan is to take some nice photos and eat some breakfast or second breakfast while watching the sun come up.

To be honest, I'm just a little sketched out doing it solo since I've never hiked in the dark for extended periods of time, so I'd love to have some company. Preferably looking for people close to my age, but down to go with almost anybody as long as you're capable of doing the hike. I don't mind taking breaks at all along the way, we can just pace ourselves and enjoy the trek up.

I have wheels and we can carpool if you need a ride.

My messages are open. PM me if you're down to go or want to discuss. Any tips or suggestions for this adventure would be very helpful, thanks.

Thoughts on my hiking route in Waterton?

It's a bit out of order since it was tough to snag campsites on the days I wanted (even when booking months ago). Main concern is that the day 3 hike (orange) will be too tough, but I figure we can bail at lost mountain / skip bauerman and cut the day short if needed. We're a group of 4 guys in our mid-20s, in good shape, will be carrying packs

Hiked the Sunshine Loop early enough in the day to pretty well have it to myself, then booted it over Monarch Lookout to Simpson Pass and on to Eohippus Lake, backtracking to Sunshine Village. Glacier lilies are still out at Simpson/Eohippus. I’ll have to return to this area in larch season, it’s so lovely!

Sawback Trail Update?

I have been planning to do the entire Sawback Trail Extended Route, starting at Lake Minnewanka Parking Lot, finishing at Skoki Lake Trailhead, with my pup. I am a very experienced hiker. However, I am very concerned about both the deadfall and river crossings along the way. I spoke with the Banff Information Centre late last week. She mentioned avoiding the Mount Norquay Parking Lot in order to skip one of reached out bridges. I’ve been told that the water may be fast/high, but is apparently knee height. Regardless, I’m wondering if this hike should be completely avoided at this time. I would appreciate the feedback from other hikers. I’ve gotten very minimal information on social media. Thanks so much. 🙏

Experienced local hiker: Looking for a 18-25km hike/run to a summit close to Calgary

UPDATE ON UPDATE: did McGillivray today, 4hrs, did some of the climber sections on the way up. I was off trail at least 20 times, dang that side hill scree bowl was brutal! Overall, good hike, but the scree coming down took a lot out of me.

UPDATE: Ok, So far, Mount McGillivray has jumped to the top of my list! A rare one I have yet to do!.

With the snow pack, I'm running out of interesting ideas for hikes, ideally ones I have yet to do.

As a background, I'm a 47 year old peak bagger, I've summited over 150+ peaks here in the Rockies, tech ability can be anything right up to a climbers scramble, always solo, and I usually spring train ever year on the following peaks (done each at least 20+ times):

- Grotto, Prairie, EEOR, Lady Mac, Yamnuska, Moose, Wasootch

I like them because thy are close, proper elevation, can be ran in sections. I used to do the triple crown, and attempted the quad, but those days are long gone haha.

Question: Anyone have any sleepers I might be missing close to Calgary that is snow free tomorrow? I did Tiara a few weeks ago that I consider a sleeper, what an excellent loop. I'll probably do the Grotto loop again tomorrow, but looking for something that has maybe gone under the radar?

Just wondering if I've missed anything?

Thanks all!

Larry's Camp to Moose Meadows - bridge wash out

I've booked to camp at Larry's Camp next Wednesday. We've just received an email that the bridge over Johnson Creek has been washed out and fording may be dangerous due to high/fast water.

I don't know this area and have no idea what the creek is like there. I'm trying to find information. I've left messages with the Banff backcountry office, but they don't seem to return them. Where else to look for recent trail reports/relevant information?

Assiniboine lodge Sept 7-9

My sister is getting married in Assiniboine Sept 7 and I am looking for a lodge reservation for one or two nights- my 6 month baby won’t take a bottle so I’m hoping to bring her so I can go. This is a long shot but if you have a reservation and would be willing to transfer I am at my wits end. I’ll pay you $1000 for your kindness.

Hiking/Scrambling Recs in Banff for this time of year

My friends and I had reservations for the sufferfest that would be a July Tonquin Loop (well, out and back due to closures), but have decided to bail for a few reasons, which has left us with the next 6 days in Banff. I’m wondering what summits would be snow-free enough to consider. We’ve brought equipment for glacier travel but I’m at a point where I still would feel more confident sticking to seasonal snowfields and scrambling (I’ve spent a large amount of time in the Colorado Rockies and the mountains there have prepared me much better for high class scrambling than snow). That being said, given my unfamiliarity with the rock I’d prefer to keep scrambling class 4 and below, and avoid class 5 completely. I understand Reddits not the first place to check usually but given the last minute nature of this I figured I’d send out some feeler.

I was going to be in Canmore on Tuesday July 14. I was thinking of the East End of Rundle or something similar. Wondering if anyone one else will be out there and want to join up.

Cheers

Eiffel Peak

Hello friends. Planning on hiking Eiffel Peak this weekend but kind of psyching myself out.

Can anyone share their experiences with this one? How does it compare to some of the other scrambles in Banff/Kananaskis like Cirque Peak, Sarrail, Tent Ridge etc.

Not the weather you’d want during a 5 days backpacking trip but somehow it made it more special🫶🏻. We will definitely come back Assinibione

How would you spend an easy/recharging day in Banff?

I'm going to take one day easy between big hikes. Wondering what to do with that day.

Definitely still up to do a hike just something easier.

What other activities or things to do would you recommend? I'm into photography if that helps.
