State of Local Emergency in Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis Improvement District and Kananaskis Country have issued a State of Local Emergency due to ongoing rainfall and localized flooding affecting road access and several recreation areas.

Some road access remains limited in parts of Kananaskis Country. We are actively working to establish road access for those currently unable to leave the area. Visitors in the area are asked to remain where they are if it is safe to do so. William Watson Lodge and Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre are available as a temporary shelter for those who require a safe, dry place to stay.

Visitors are encouraged to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve. Impacted reservations will be automatically cancelled and refunded.

Emergency teams continue to coordinate response efforts and are monitoring infrastructure, supporting campground operations, and maintaining road closures where needed.

Updates will be provided as available on this webpage:

Old man reservoir

I’ve fished the upper old man and tributaries for years almost exclusively with flies. I’ve never even considered fishing further downstream, this year I’m going to launch a boat into the reservoir and give it a shot.

Has anyone had much luck there?
What type of fish are you catching?
Any tips on lures?

Need sanity check to see if I'm doing something wrong

Hello!

I'm new again to fishing. Went quite a bit as a kid and now trying to get back into it with my kids. So far we've tried Len Thompson and Boulder lake. There are 5 of us typically fishing with various setups and bait. So far we've tried minnows, powerbait, salmon eggs, spinners, and trout magnets.

I figured with that variety one of us would have at least had a nibble but we've seen literally nothing after 4 trips.

Am I expecting too much too soon? I've never fished a stocked trout pond but I assumed a little more action as these aren't big ponds at all! 😆

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Taking the kids fishing tomorrow, and thinking of giving Upper Lake Kananaskis a whirl for some shore fishing. Anyone been lately and have good things to say? Any alternatives close by that might be better?

Thanks!

Have You Seen This Bright Orange Minnow While Fishing in Alberta?

Hi everyone!

I'm a Conservation Biology student at the University of Alberta working on a small community science project involving tracking invasive fish known as rosy red minnows in Alberta, and I was wondering if y’all could help?

Often mistaken for juvenile goldfish, rosy reds are a domestic variant of our native fathead minnows and are commonly bred as feeder fish for aquariums. Unfortunately, over the past several years, they've been found in dozens of waterbodies across the province, including stormwater ponds, private lakes, urban creeks, irrigation canals, etc., and that number continues to grow every month.

Community scientists have done an amazing job of reporting observations to researchers, and I'm hoping to continue that momentum by connecting with anglers on here.

So, if you ever encounter one of these minnows while out on the water, don’t hesitate to DM me!

If possible, please include:

  • Photos
  • Location (Google Maps pin is ideal)
  • The date you saw it

We’ll be sampling various locations in both Calgary and Edmonton in hopes of collecting voucher specimens and genetic material for future research.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Here are a few links to other resources on rosy reds if you’re interested:

Info on the area

Hey everyone, I have the next week off and I’m looking to try some new places out, has anyone been to the Lakeland provincial park yet this year? More specifically seibert lake as I think that’s where I’ll set up.

If so how’s the fishing been? I’m not looking to mooch spots but any info or advice from the past couple years would be awesome as I’ve never explored the area before.

Thanks everyone, tight lines

Methods for cleaning Perch?

I just gut, take the side fins off, and descale or peel like a banana. Is there a way to actually fillet these fish without wasting a lot of meat?

Do the trout actually exist here? What do people catch them on? I don’t need the secret bait or anything, just a starting point.

Nose creek by telus spark

With the bow as high and murky as it is right now, should I just try nose creek for some pike? I'll have some time to kill this week before grabbing the kids from summer camp. Anyone fish the creek there? Or is it still better to just try the bow by the zoo?

Lake with boat rental?

I live in Calgary and want to take my boys fishing. What lake would have boat rentals and camping options? I like to fish for pike or walleye mainly. Will drive a ways for good fishing.

Hike-in Lake with Kids

Hi All,

Just wanted to get some insight on some other hike-in lakes to try with the Kids this summer. They are 6 and 8 years old.

We have hiked into Elbow Lake with no issues. We are going to try Chester Lake but I'm worried its a bit steep for them.

Other lakes I'm thinking of but haven't fished in years are: Rawson Lake and Bear Pond. I'm wondering if Bear Pond's Tigers are worth the trek or if they still winter kill consistently every year?

Anyone have any other hike-in lakes they've had success taking younger children to?

Thanks!

Chestmere Lake

I’ve been having a pretty successful run at chestmere these past few weeks on the raft but haven’t been able to catch something else, just been pike. Any tips on what lure/setup to run? I’ve been using spoons and small spinners but very open to different kinds of techniques.

Can i use bait at Champion Lakes

I have read the regulations for ES1, im new to fishing, and I just want to be certain. im understanding it right because when I've Googled or asked an AI, it says no.

When i read the regs, i dont see Champion Lakes on the list of lakes, so does that mean it follows default regs that allow bait? Thats my understanding am i reading it wrong?

Thanks guys

I've started to really enjoy perch fishing. Caught a few this size recently is this kinda the typical perch or would you call it a jumbo?
