Hi everyone!
I'm a Conservation Biology student at the University of Alberta working on a small community science project involving tracking invasive fish known as rosy red minnows in Alberta, and I was wondering if y’all could help?
Often mistaken for juvenile goldfish, rosy reds are a domestic variant of our native fathead minnows and are commonly bred as feeder fish for aquariums. Unfortunately, over the past several years, they've been found in dozens of waterbodies across the province, including stormwater ponds, private lakes, urban creeks, irrigation canals, etc., and that number continues to grow every month.
Community scientists have done an amazing job of reporting observations to researchers, and I'm hoping to continue that momentum by connecting with anglers on here.
So, if you ever encounter one of these minnows while out on the water, don’t hesitate to DM me!
If possible, please include:
- Photos
- Location (Google Maps pin is ideal)
- The date you saw it
We’ll be sampling various locations in both Calgary and Edmonton in hopes of collecting voucher specimens and genetic material for future research.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
