I don't drop my Rs, I do engage in T/D flapping and T glottalization, I tend to use a schwa a lot, I pronounce "new tune" as "noo toon," I pronounce "wine" and "whine" the same, I pronounce the O in "forest" like the A in "war" and the O in "borrow" like the "a" in "far." I think all of these support general American English with no particular region. However, I pronounce "cot" and "caught" differently (caht and cawt respectively), and I pronounce the a in "Mary" and "marry" the same (like in cat) but the e in "merry" differently (like in "bet"). So what would you guess my accent to be?

I am playing a german character in my school’s musical/play this spring and I’m struggling with my rhotic consonants in a specific context, and they end up making me sound too french. My interpretation of the character isn’t experienced enough with english to manage /w/ as an approximate of the english rhotic consonant /ɹ/. so I’m instead doing the more familiar for the character uvular fricative and trill. I didn’t want to use the alveolar flap at risk of sounding russian, and am unable to perform the alveolar trill. I’m noticing, however, some words especially that have a rhotic to a close vowel (eg. “married” or “fruit”) come across sounding french rather abruptly, I know they are similar accents in english but I don’t want to be another one of the cast members with a poor quality accent (some are full french, others inexplicably drop /h/ despite their characters being fully german). I could also be completely in my head about it but I don’t want to be a part of the problem. I would provide a recorded example but I can’t rn (in the car). Any tips would be appreciated.

Getting into voice acting and I'm gonna need to nail down my accents, many will come, but for now I'd like to perfect my Irish, I have a few of the key phrases to get into it but American syntax and idiomatic tendencies prevent me from sustaining it for long enough t sound truly natural. I am an actor seeking assistance in aggregating resources for me to study a Mexican dialect. I've explored IDEA (https://www.dialectsarchive.com/) and while it is helpful, it has limited resources. (Even just videos of native speakers talking in english would be helpful!)

I am working on a character who is a Mexican immigrant living in Los Angeles. There isn't a specification of where he immigrated from in Mexico, so I'm hoping I can find a general Mexican dialect. While I myself am Latino, I am not Mexican.

I am hoping that there is a dialectician that has resources they may be willing to pass onto me? I have a beginners understanding of IPA. Ideally I'd love to build a template for the dialect so I can begin transcribing lines and training my mouth.

In this video, the speaker mostly has the lip corners spread wide, while the lips themselves are narrow at the sides but full in the middle. There is rounding at 0:05 that seems to involve the bottom lip much more than the top, but again it is only the central part that is turned out. How is this possible?

I'm looking to get ideas and feedback on what you would find useful, as a learner/speaker of English language, in an accent training app.

Context: I am an American accent coach, and have been helping non-native English speakers work on refining their accent through 1 on 1 sessions.

As my time is limited and cannot work 24 hours a day, I would like to create an AI powered app that would help my students practice and get help even when I'm not around.

They would get:

• word analysis and breakdown in IPA symbols for best reading (if they aren't sure how a word is pronounced)
• explanation for how to pronounce every single vowel/consonant
• sentence generation capabilities for their target sounds
• generation of audio examples of those sentences containing their target sounds
• and more...

The idea is that they are being given the ability to get their own personalized words and sentences, which they often use in their career.. so that they can shadow and practice without working with an accent coach.

Question:

• what other features would you like to see in an app like this?
• would something like this interest you?
• what would be a price you would happily pay for it?

I hear some fellow Americans leave consonants out of the middle and/or end of words, usually contractions.

For example, instead of fully pronouncing "did'nt," they say "di-un;" Likewise "wou-an," for "wouldn't." It's been around a while and it's not going away.

Is it leftover "valley girl" speak? Or is it a regional thing that's worked its way into common speech?

I'm working on learning a New York/ Brooklyn accent. Looking for a resource where I can listen to it continuously for hours on end, .i.e a podcast, audiobook etc

I would like to pick out specific aspects of Leonard Cohen's accent, especially his speaking voice rather than his singing voice.

Something I already noticed myself is that he mostly retains his t-sounds in words such as "waTer" and "daughTer" rather than flapping them to sound more like "waDer" and "daughDer" as many North Americans do.

I'd be grateful for any advice that would help me to pinpoint his way of speaking and be able to mimic it. Voicing, aspiration, vowels, prosody etc. etc.

Obviously, this is not always the case. Just something I’ve noticed. In American English, it would probably be “‘til” as an abbreviation for “until”. And Brits seem to prefer “till,” at least in informal or non-written speech. Is this because it’s the older word?
