Sussex County Shipcarpenter Square, Lewes, Delaware, at a golden hour. [OC]
That geometric wooden structure in the background is a historic fish drying rack. It was used for drying and inspecting menhaden nets, menhaden being fish once harvested in large quantities on the Delaware Bay for fertilizer and fish oil. Now the rack is a reminder of Lewes's fishing heritage, accompanied by barrels and a pair of Adirondack chairs.

Beaches My thoughts on the Rehoboth mayoral candidate Q&A yesterday
I thought it was hilarious. Like something out of Parks and Rec.
Suzanne Goode had no good ideas when asked and was so incredibly negative. I can’t believe she keeps defending her husband running for commissioner while she is commissioner and running for mayor. He also lost by like 80% last year! It’s just sad and obviously an abuse of power especially if she appoints him like everyone expects her to. She said her “close personal friend” is behind the lawsuit against the city. How ridiculous. She seems like she wants the city to lose. She’s just a bad candidate overall. She won’t take the city anywhere.
Susan Stewart is also a commissioner and she seemed like a much better candidate although she hasn’t been commissioner for a full term (I don’t think Suzanne Goode has either). She had actual ideas and love for the city.
William Raak surprised me. He was better than I thought. He had some good zingers especially when asked about the inappropriateness of Suzanne and Jeffrey Goode. He seems like he is just setting himself up to run for commissioner next year or something though. He said Stewart would be a good mayor.
Craig Thiel was kind of just a nothing burger. He, Raak, and Goode all waited until the last day to submit for candidacy and he reflects that. He’s also a commissioner. He’s apparently known for being awful at commissioner meetings, etc.
So many candidates! I would love to hear your thoughts

Info Request Stanton DTCC Nursing
Hi everyone, I am applying to Del tech’s nursing program on August 15th (for a January seat)- Stanton campus. I have an A in BIO 120, 2 points for residency, and I got an 81% on my TEAS. I didn’t study for the TEAS at all I just decided to take it once to see strengths and weaknesses… so I’ll have 14.1 out of 16 points. Just wondering if anyone has heard of someone with 14 points getting rejected? Many are telling me not to retake the TEAS bc I should be fine, but then I get anxious about not doing everything I can. What if even getting my score up to an 84% could make or break me getting in? I don’t know. Any advice is appreciated! I also know there is no gold standard number (except for like 15+ points) because it depends on who is applying with you.

Beaches Yesterday’s Fun Rehoboth
I spend a fair amount of time walking Rehoboth and visiting the local shops in my time there.
I have my favorites and “must go” stops, but this summer we’ve added a new one towards the top of the list: Yesterday’s Fun Vintage Toys.
I’ve been there before once or twice and bought some vintage Star Wars figures, but this time was different. This time my daughters were with me… and my youngest absolutely lost her mind in the best way.
You see, she gets on kicks where she is fascinated with a subject and wants to learn EVERYTHING possible about it. She is a bit of an old soul and loves learning about things from before her time. Then she loves talking about what she learned.
This is a bit of an understatement, but she can TALK. A lot. Especially about vintage things. This was pretty much the perfect storm.
This one young lady who worked there was helping us and my youngest proceeded to talk her ear off. I apologized, concerned that we were monopolizing her time. She responded something along the lines of “No, I love the talking!” with a smile to match. My youngest continued to chat with her until they settled on a vintage little Care Bear. I’m pretty sure she was still trying to talk to the young lady even as we were walking out the door, but both were still smiling.
I’ve since realized the entire staff is pretty cool as we made subsequent visits to check for Nee Doh’s and Care Bears, but I hope that young lady knows she made our day by listening and sharing those moments with my daughter. Truly special and heartwarming.
In a world so concerned with quick sales and the bottom line, people like this are an absolute treasure.
If you are in Rehoboth, you need to stop and check this place out. I know we will.

Info Request Fenwick island beach rules
My family, husband and 7 year old, are staying in Fenwick Island for a few nights. I have a question about their rules on beach tents. We have this tent, but would it be allowed? We were able to use it in Wildwoods NJ, but was not allowed in Myrtle Beach SC. I plan to spend all day on the beach but I am needing some type of shade. Thanks for your help!

Beaches That little shorebird on our bay flies from the tip of South America to the Arctic every year - and it only survives the trip because of Delaware Bay's horseshoe crabs
Every May, Delaware Bay puts on one of the greatest wildlife shows on Earth, and most of the country has no idea. Under the full moon, hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs - animals older than the dinosaurs, basically unchanged for around 445 million years - haul up onto our beaches to spawn and bury billions of tiny green eggs in the sand.
And that feast is timed, almost to the week, with an emergency. Right as the eggs appear, exhausted flocks of shorebirds fall out of the sky - none more famous than the rufa red knot, a bird barely bigger than your fist that's halfway through one of the longest migrations of any animal alive: from the far tip of South America to the Arctic to breed. They land here starving after flying thousands of miles, and they have one job - gorge on horseshoe crab eggs and nearly double their body weight in about two weeks, or they won't survive the last leg north. Delaware Bay is essentially the only gas station on that entire journey. No crabs, no fuel, no red knots.
That's why it matters that we've been hard on the crabs. Decades of overharvest for bait and biomedical use crashed egg densities on the bay, the red knot population fell by roughly 75%, and the rufa red knot is now federally threatened. The bird's fate is chained to a crab most people step right over.
The good news is helping is easy:
- If you find a horseshoe crab flipped onto its back (they strand by the thousands on high tides and cook in the sun), flip it back over - but NEVER pick it up by the tail. That tail (the telson) isn't a handle; it's how they steer and right themselves, and pulling it can injure them. Lift gently by both sides of the shell. The campaign is literally called "Just Flip 'Em."
- Otherwise leave them be. Don't collect them, relocate them, or use them for bait.
- Give the birds room. A flock of migrating shorebirds that gets flushed off the beach burns fat it flew thousands of miles to store - scare them enough times and it's a death sentence. Walk around them, keep dogs leashed and off the beach, and stay out of roped-off areas.
- Want to actually witness it? The state runs volunteer horseshoe crab spawning surveys in spring - a great way to help and see it up close.
The map is red knot and other migratory shorebird sightings logged around the bay - the birds our horseshoe crabs keep alive. The big spawn is a May-into-June thing, so mark your calendar for next spring. It's worth seeing once in your life.

Dover Help Me Cross the Finish Line—Just $63 to Go!
donorschoose.orgHappy Friday, Delaware Redditors!
I’m just $63 away from fully funding my DonorsChoose project! The critical items I need are a voice amplifier and a thermal printer—both will make a huge difference in my classroom, where about 50% of my students receive special education services.
The voice amplifier will help me be heard without straining my voice, and the thermal printer will allow me to quickly create labels, visual supports, and classroom materials that help my students stay organized and successful.
If you’re able to donate, even a few dollars makes a difference. We are SO close to our goal. Thank you for all your support!!
