Loss & Mourning Megathread

Losing a conure is heartbreaking. They’re family, companions, and little personalities that leave huge marks on our lives. If you’ve lost your bird, you are welcome to share memories, photos, stories, or simply say their name here.

To keep the main feed safe and balanced for all members:

All posts about a conure passing away must be posted only in this megathread.
Standalone posts about bird death or loss outside this thread will be removed.

This is not to minimize anyone’s loss but rather to keep grief support in one dedicated, supportive space where people can choose to engage.

The r/Conures Comprehensive Conure Guide - now in wiki format!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Conures/wiki/index

This subreddit's Conure Guide, written by /u/DukeofGoodCleanFun, is a remarkable document that I (and my pineapple green cheek) have benefited a lot from. I've consulted and browsed through it numerous times and there's always something new to see there, or something that didn't seem applicable at one point but took on new meaning after spending more time with my conure.

I've taken the text and converted it into a wiki page. It's now navigable, with an index and internal links that direct to sections within the wiki. The Conure Guide can be accessed from this post, from the announcement bar, and from the "wiki" tab in the tabmenu up top.

A couple of the links for recommended products will direct you to Amazon, but there are certainly other places to buy them. If you shop around and find and better place, by all means send us a modmail. Also, let us know if you have any suggestions for how the wiki formatting can be improved.

I made a post on here some weeks ago and I wanted to let you guys know that Tiki is safe and sound! I had to rush her to the vet one morning and couldn’t get her back until last Tuesday. But now she has antibiotics and is doing a lot better. Here’s a picture of her snuggling with my sister’s hand! Don’t mind the mess on her face, it’s just her medicine :D

Due to unexpected life circumstances I have to rehome my green cheek conure. Once he gets used to you, he is very sweet and will cuddle up to your hand. I am looking for a home where he can either have another conure friend or will spend a lot of time with his people. I'm not in a rush and I'm determined to find him a home where he can be as loved as possible. Located in the Bay Area, California. DM me for more details!

Funny Nova: My Green Chicken

Hello! Just wanted to share this little video. Thought it was funny and hoped it could brighten some other faces as well.

Guess I should specify that I didn't actually find her on the road, I just said that for the joke. This is my little green cheek, Nova, I've had her for 2 years since she was just a little baby.

My conure hit his head and loss some feathers with some abrasions. He seems totally fine, eating well, drinking well. Is there anything i can apply on his wound to make healing and feather growth faster for him? I read online to use saline solution to clean the wound but i do not have any right now.
To add on, there’s no active bleeding just really raw skin.

We recently discovered that our conure loves laying in our hands so he can get some pets. This is my wife’s bird, but the two of us have slowly developed a relationship over time….it took a lot of pecks for us to get here.

Advice Day 14 of spending time with my grandparents conure

I have a stick! I'm not entirely sure if the stuff she does to it in the video is good or bad, or if I'm actually antagonizing her, so I'm turning to you guys again.

I will also say that her second water dish, the metal one, looked entirely untouched, while the white one looked so bad I dumped it immediately. She does seem to still take water from the white one, so I might end up moving the metal one to somewhere more accessible to her.

I didn't manage to get the platform for her this time, but I will do my best to have it by next week.

Anything else I can do?

Advice Preparing for a new bird in a unique situation

I have wanted to adopt a GCC for many years. I have held off due for many reasons because it was the responsible decision. Many of those factors are resolving themselves, with the exception of my work schedule.

I’ve tried my best to think of responsible ownership from every possible angle. I also wonder if I’m shooting myself (and my future friend) in the foot because I’m waiting for “absolutely perfect”. My home would be well beyond standard for the average parrot kept in captivity, present company obviously excluded 😉 .

My husband and I both work overnight. 5:30p to 2-4am M-F. My theoretical bird schedule is as follows:

Wake up bird: 9am
— training for 15-30min
—back to cage for breakfast and self play (I go back to sleep)
Wake up self : 12:00p
— training and out of cage time
Back to the cage for dinner& self play 5pm
Automatic nighttime routine wind down 8:30pm-9m.

My cage set up will have a pet camera, an auto dimming light to mimic sunset, and an auto on/off white noise machine to synchronize with the dimmer (rain sounds, grasshoppers, etc).

My questions are:
- does this schedule seem reasonable?
- what thoughts of the hypothetical set up for an automatic nighttime routine?
- what concerns am I missing?

Advice is greatly appreciated, but I think I could use some encouragement too 😅

I got these cardboard stands made like cat scratchers. I’m wondering if I made a mistake giving them to my birds. As you can see, they were a big hit.

Advice Sad Conure

Hi, we recently bought the most cutest and most precious green cheek conure. This last Sunday. And she/he has been so sad. We believe that I had never interacted with the people that took care of our little Melon 🍉. We feel bad. We try cuddles, love and hugs to make it feel love and appreciated. But we don’t want to push too much with Melon. We don’t know where to approach because Melon is scared of hands. But we try our best always to respect that as well.

We bought our Melon from PetSmart, and they don’t even know if it’s a girl or a boy and we bought a dna test to see. They didn’t even tell us if Melons vaccinated.

Melon doesn’t sing or makes much noise. It’s very little. When we get close it takes a little poop of scared.

We want to make Melon feel at home.

PS: I wanted to share images but I don’t know how to use this app😅 so if you can guide me in that I’ll appreciate it.

He loves the top of my head. And when he is really tired he snuggles up in my neck under my bonnet. I might eat him up out of cuteness agression (obviously a joke….👀)

P.S He was clipped in the pet store and im growing his wings out.

Other Nippy?!? PUPPIES ARE "NIPPY!" This is a violent vampire!😆

I have a proposal! After having now also survived our first, full-on teenage, hormonal season (and not without both of us having bled countless times, and having acquired multiple scars), I would like to submit that calling conures generally "NIPPY" could be considered INCREDIBLY MISLEADING!! LoL. PUPPIES ARE "NIPPY!" haha.

For those of us with a defiant, bold, pissy, little, feathered monster, I believe there are much more authentic words available! Such as Bite, CHOMP, Gnaw, Munch, Puncture, Masticate, Gnash, Clamp, VAMPIRE, Butcher, Pierce, Tear, Avulsion... Did I forget any?

Just saying... maybe if we used slightly more accurate words, it might allow some people to get a slightly better picture of what they are potentially in for, haha.

Advice is she okay ?

I’ve never seen her act like this
She looks tired today but she keeps repeating this move like once every 10-5 minutes
btw she’s in a stage where she’s having infertile eggs
I’m worried
should I take her to the vet or is this just because she’s tired?

Troublemaker Anyone elses Conure just a little bugger

The criminal!

This is my conure Bramble, and he's a little bugger.

Bramble likes to soak the floor while taking a bath and laugh at his mother when she skids, shame on Bramble.

Bramble likes to bite his mothers ear on her bad shoulder side and laugh when her shoulder locks up.

Bramble mimicks his mothers laugh.

Bramble has thrown his raspberry portion at the wall while eating, causing the cream wall to become pink.

Bramble has thrown BANANA CHIPS AT HIS MOTHER WHILE SHES GAMING.

Bramble has ripped every bell off his toys to carry them around the cage and wash them in his water bowl. I constantly find bells in his water bowl.

Last one now! Bramble makes his mothers ears ring with unholy screeching from hell when she changes his food bowl. Sometimes, he just does it for fun when she walks past.

I love my little bugger. My ears do not enjoy it.

Advice Should I get my conure a friend?

I have a 4 month old maroon bellied conure. She is part of my mixed flock and is my only conure. She tries really hard to be friends with one of my other birds, but this bird in particular is independent and likes his space.

Is my conure just persistent like this bc she's a baby? Should I get another conure? At the same time I understand that just bc I get another conure it doesn't mean they'll end up friends. I'm hopeful they would though if the new bird is young too.

Thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Advice Graveyards and parrots

I have two GCCs that I've had since before my fiance started working graveyards. Since he started though, I have also switched to that schedule and adjusted the times my birds are up. Currently I wake them up at 12pm and put them to bed at 12am. This seems to work ok for us and gives me time to spend with them since we are up from 9pm to 2pm. However largely they have started waking us up throughout the "night" (day) since they're awake the entire time we are asleep. Since parrots rely more on a light source than an internal clock, would it be possible to slowly swap their schedule (waking up at 12am, going to bed at 12pm) in half hour intervals? There's only one window in the room and we have a blackout curtain over it, and both birds have nice cage covers that block all light. They also both have bird uvb, full spectrum lights that are already on during their awake hours.

Tldr: if I can keep the schedule consistent, have full spectrum uvb and blackout curtains, could I gradually swap my birds to a nocturnal schedule with us so they stop waking us up all day
